Albuquerque Isotopes 11, Chihuahuas 9 (10 innings)

Prospect Watch: El Paso started strong when they put six runs on the board in the first, including a grand slam by Romeo Sanabria. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t keep the Isotopes from coming back to take the lead 7-6 before Ethan Salas’ eighth inning sacrifice fly brought tied the game again. For the second time in the series, Albuquerque plated four runs against Alek Jacob in the 10th inning, and held off the Chihuahuas despite Dustin Harris‘ fourth home run to hand the home team their fifth straight loss. …As we noted yesterday, the 27-year-old Harris has been red hot since since signing with the Padres immediately after the White Sox released him. He had an .886 OPS in Triple-A Charlotte in 183 plate appearances and was in the big leagues for 11 games with Houston this season. So far, the left-handed hitting outfielder has a batting average of .344 with a .607 slugging percentage for El Paso. Harris’s huge production has come despite bottom-of-the-barrel underlying exit velocity data since joining the system, making a regression over the last month likely. … A grand slam was a nice way for Sanabria to start August after a tough July that saw him post a slash line of .224/.296/.306 in limited action during his first full month of Triple-A. The big first baseman had an underwhelming .394 slugging percentage in his return trip to San Antonio to open the year, but his strong production away from Nelson Wolff Stadium gave reason to hope that he’d get a spike moving up to the PCL. Now 24, Sanabria will hope to build on this series over the final six weeks of the season. … Lefty Miguel Cienfuegos, 29, who threw four seasons in independent and semi-pro leagues in Canada before getting his first opportunity in affiliated baseball at 26 with Fort Wayne in 2023, threw two perfect innings of relief tonight. He’s been much better than his overall 6.50 ERA as of late, with a 2.59 ERA since June 3. … El Paso will try to salvage one game of the six-game set on Sunday, but it might be a tall order. The Isotopes are 11-1 at Southwest University Park this season.

Prospect Watch:  The Missions broke their four-game losing streak with an extra-inning win at one of the minor leagues’ most generous hitting environments in Amarillo, but it was close. With two outs in the ninth and a runner on first, Josh Mallitz gave up a double to tie the game, but Mallitz got the next batter to ground out to send the game into extra innings. Both clubs scored in the tenth before Kai Roberts, who entered the game as a pinch-runner, singled to put the Missions ahead. He used his speed to advance to second on the throw then notched his 32nd stolen base of the year to be able to come home on Ryan Jackson‘s fourth hit of the night. Roberts wasn’t done as he made a diving catch in center for the last out to give San Antonio the win. … Jackson and Braedon Karpathios both had big nights, combining for seven hits and five RBIs. Jackson leads the Missions with 90 hits on the season, while providing solid defense all over the infield. Karpathios, who had a double as part of his 3-for-6 night, had a rough July, batting just .218 with a 262 on-base percentage, but has had solid production on the road in the Texas League this year. … After allowing two runs in an inning of work Wednesday, José Leclerc rebounded nicely in his second appearance with San Antonio, throwing two scoreless innings. The 32-year-old punched out two and now has 14 strikeouts against only one walk in his 11.1 innings across three levels working back from last year’s shoulder surgery.

TinCaps 7, Great Lakes Loons 0 (Suspended B2)

Fort Wayne was off to a great start, sending ten batters to the plate in the first inning to jump out 5-0, and then added two more in the second inning before the game was suspended before the Loons came up in the second inning. The game will resume Sunday as a nine-inning contest, with the scheduled game to follow as a seven-inning affair. … Alex McCoy homered in the first and second and now has 15 home runs on the season. After just three extra-base hits in 22 games, the big man seems to have turned the corner again with three homers and a pair of doubles over his last 23 at-bats. … Bryan Balzer had the start for the TinCaps and looked good in his sole inning of work, throwing 10 of his 16 pitches for strikes to go along with a punchout. After a rough first outing in the Midwest League, the hard-throwing righty has allowed only two earned runs over his last 17.2 innings.

Stockton Ports 10, Storm 1

Prospect Watch: On the road in Stockton, not a lot went right for the Storm as Lake Elsinore was held to four singles on the evening and failed to capitalize on seven walks by Ports pitchers. Right-hander Tyler Schmitt took the loss to even his record at 6-6 on the season. Schmitt, 21, is coming off a strong July where he had a 4.00 ERA in four starts and 18 innings, but had a rough time on Saturday. Last year’s 17th-round pick surrendered five extra-base hits while giving up seven runs over 3.1 innings. … Big Canadian righty Brandon Langley, turned in a strong 2.1 shutout innings. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan native signed as an undrafted free agent last summer. He has recorded 60 strikeouts in 49.1 innings, but also has 35 walks and catches too much of the plate at times, yielding a 6.57 ERA.
