Chihuahuas 10, Oklahoma City Baseball Club 2

Key Statistics: CF Jose Azocar, 2-for-4, R, BB, RBI; RF Tirso Ornelas, 2-for-5, 2 R, RBI; 1B Nate Mondou, 2-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB, RBI; LF Matthew Batten, 2-for-4, R, RBI; 2B Clay Dungan, 2-for-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI; RHP Gabe Mosser (W, 6-4) 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K; LHP Jayvien Sandridge, IP, BB, K

Prospect Watch: El Paso overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning, scoring the final 10 runs in a rout of the Dodgers’ Triple-A club. … Jose Azocar led off and reached base three times in five plate appearances. He singled twice, drew a walk, and drove in a run. The former big leaguer has hit well after initially struggling following his demotion to the PCL. The 28-year-old is hitting .304/.341/.494 with three homers and 12 RBI this month. … Tirso Ornelas singled twice to extend his hitting streak to five games. The 24-year-old has hit safely in 18 of 21 games this month, notching 10 multi-hit games in July. Ornelas has an incredible July, hitting a robust .402/.444/.598 with

four homers and 16 RBI. He was recently added to the 40-man roster and he serves as an important depth piece for an organization that has augmented their big league club with several trades that have moved out minor league talent. … Righty Gabe Mosser pitched well once again, finishing just one out from tallying a quality start. He worked 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out nine, setting a new season-high. The former Shippensburg University hurler gave up eight runs last time out but has generally been a solid performer for the Chihuahuas in 2024. He’s pitched at least five innings in 10 of his last 12 starts and has a 5.55 ERA this season – which isn’t terrible considering the 10-team PCL has three teams with an ERA over six.

Roster Moves: The organization made a flurry of moves Tuesday, with several of the trades impacting the El Paso roster. Outfielder Brandon Lockridge was added to the roster and should be in uniform in the coming days. The 27-year-old was acquired from the Yankees in exchange for reliever Enyel De Los Santos and Storm reliever Thomas Balboni Jr. The 27-year-old was the Yankees’ fifth-rounder in 2018, out of Troy University. He has spent the entire 2024 with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre where he was hitting .295/.405/.383 with zero homers and 32 RBI. He can play center, left, and second base. He does possess elite speed and could be a useful depth piece. Graham Pauley, who made the Padres’ opening day roster, and the recently-optioned Adam Mazur will head to Miami as part of a six-player deal.

Frisco RoughRiders 4, Missions 2 (10 innings)

Key Statistics: 1B Robbie Tenerowicz, 1-for-3, BB, 2B; SS Ray-Patrick Didder, 2-for-4, R, HR (8), 2 RBI; LHP Miguel Cienfuegos, 4 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K; RHP Carter Loewen, 2 IP, 3 H, 3 K; RHP Ethan Routzahn (L, 4-2) 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, ER, BB, K

Prospect Watch: The Missions rallied to tie the game at two in the eighth inning but Frisco plated a pair in the tenth inning to defeat the Missions in San Antonio. … All of the San Antonio offense came courtesy of Ray-Patrick Didder, who connected on a two-run shot for his eighth homer of the season. Didder, 29, also added a single as well. The veteran utilityman has spent all of 2024 with the Missions, showing a good eye at the plate and a little power. After posting a .687 OPS in 54 games with the Missions last year, he’s put a nearly identical .690 mark this season. He’s also added 24 stolen bases in 27 attempts in his second season in the organization. … Lefty Miguel Cienfuegos gave the Missions a short but effective outing, pitching four shutout innings while allowing three hits. He walked two and struck out two. The 27-year-old pitched seven innings back on July 13 but moved to the bullpen after and pitched twice in relief before jumping back into the rotation on Tuesday. Cienfuegos has pitched for the three top farm teams in the system after starting the season in Fort Wayne. Between the three stops, the former independent leaguer has a 5.18 ERA in 88.2 innings. … Carter Loewen pitched two scoreless innings in relief. While he allowed three hits, he mitigated the damage by striking out three RoughRiders. The 25-year-old from British Colombia has generally been a solid reliever for the Missions this season. A disastrous outing earlier this month (five earned runs in 0.1 innings) has inflated Loewen’s ERA to 3.65 but he has some encouraging underlying numbers. He’s averaged 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings and opposing batters are hitting just .200 against him. He does allow too many free passes (22 in 35 innings) but he’s been a very solid contributor since signing with the Padres as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

Roster Moves: Robby Snelling, who was the top remaining pitching prospect in the system, headed to the Miami organization in the Tanner Scott/Bryan Hoeing deal. In addition, the Missions received infielder/outfielder Lucas Dunn. Dunn, 25, had been on a rehab assignment with the ACL club but was recently placed on the development list. Overall, Dunn is hitting a collective .204/.301/.303 between the ACL Padres, the TinCaps and one at-bat with the Missions.

West Michigan Whitecaps 6, TinCaps 4

Key Statistics: CF Kai Murphy, 3-for-4, 3 R, HR (4), RBI; LF Joshua Mears, 1-for-3, R, HR (6), RBI; RHP Enmanuel Pinales (L, 3-8) 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 K; RHP Jose Geraldo, 2 IP, 2 BB, 5 K

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps allowed two in the fourth and three more in the fifth to lose at home to the Whitecaps. … Center fielder Kai Murphy had an excellent day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and his fourth homer of the year. The multi-hit effort extended his hitting streak to four games. He is 8-for-18 during that stretch, raising his average to .231. The former ASU outfielder has produced roughly league-average offense year while playing a career-high 83 games. … Joshua Mears connected on a mammoth solo homer to left, his sixth of the year. The big outfielder possesses immense power but still struggles to make enough contact to make it matter in game action. That trend has mostly continued in 2024. Since joining the TinCaps roster, Mears has six homers in 133 at-bats. He also carries a troubling 31.7% K-rate that remains untenable. However, when Mears makes loud contact, one is reminded of how much raw talent and strength he possesses. The Washington native has a .594 OPS in 36 games this season. … Righty Enmanuel Pinales completed five innings but he struggled, taking the loss in the process. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits. He didn’t issue a walk and he struck out a pair. The 23-year-old has had an up-and-down July that began spectacularly. The righty pitched 14 shutout innings across three outings to start the month. However, he’s allowed 10 earned runs over 10 innings over his last two outings. In 17 appearances this year, Pinales has pitched to a 3.86 ERA.

Roster Moves: Prior to the flurry of trades, the TinCaps received righty Isaiah Lowe and infielder/outfielder Wyatt Hoffman from Lake Elsinore. Lowe, 21, has emerged as one of the best pitching prospects in the organization as a result of his outstanding performance and the club’s many trades. Lowe wrapped up his time in Lake Elsinore with a a 3.00 ERA and a very strong 29.7% strikeout rate in 72 innings. Hoffman, 25, has helped the Storm with defensive versatility and a career-high wRC+ of 93, roughly seven percent below the league average. The TinCaps do lose Jay Beshears, who was part of the package going to Miami.

Fresno Grizzlies 10, Storm 5

Key Statistics: SS Leo De Vries, 1-for-4, 3B, BB, RBI; 3B Jose Sanabria, 2-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, SB (4); 1B Ethan Long, 1-for-4, RBI; LHP Luis Gutierrez (L, 1-2) 1.2 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, K; RHP Will Varmette, 2.1 IP, H, ER, BB, 6 K; RHP Luis German, 2 IP, H, BB, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The Fresno Grizzlies punished starter Luis Gutierrez, plating eight runs in the second inning to beat the Storm in their first trip to Fresno this season. … Second baseman Jose Sanabria doubled, singled, and drove in a pair of runs in the victory. The 21-year-old infielder has played well for the Storm in July, hitting .290/.347/.377 with six doubles. Sanabria has also seen time in the outfield to add to the versatility he brings to the club. … Leodalis De Vries had a relatively quiet night by his standards, going just 1-for-4 with a walk. The hit, though, was a booming triple off the wall that extended his hitting streak to seven games. With one game left in July, De Vries is hitting an incredible .329/.444/.720 this month. … Gutierrez was pummeled in the second inning by the Grizzlies, taking his second loss. The big blow came from rehabbing big leaguer Nolan Jones, who tagged Gutierrez for a two-run homer. Gutierrez allowed seven runs in just 1.2 innings. The loss increased his ERA to 6.63. … RIghty Will Varmette took over for Gutierrez and pitched well in 2.1 innings of work. The Alabama native allowed a run on a hit. He walked one and struck out six. The 21-year-old has battled command issues but has intriguing stuff. The former undrafted free agent has struck out 61 batters in 46 innings.

Roster Moves: The Storm received catcher/outfielder Colton Vincent, right-handed pitcher Miguel Valdez, and infielder/outfielder Spence Coffman from the ACL club. Thomas Balboni Jr., who has been working as the closer for Lake Elsinore, was sent to the Yankees in the De Los Santos deal.
