Tirso Ornelas continues his best offensive season. (Photo: Jorge Salgado)
Key Stats: LF Tirso Ornelas 4-for-5, HR (11); RF Cal Mitchell 2-for-4, 2B; DH Xander Bogaerts 0-for-3, 2 BB; RHP Jhony Brito 2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 2 BB, HBP; RHP Sean Reynolds 3.2 IP, H, 6 K, 1 BB; RHP Alek Jacob 2 IP, H, 2 K; RHP Logan Gillaspie (W, 2-0) IP, BB
Prospect Watch: Tirso Ornelas put an exclamation point on his four-hit game with a two-out, walk-off RBI single to lift the Chihuahuas from an early 5-0 deficit. The 24-year-old outfielder also connected on his 11th homer of the year, pushing his slugging percentage to a season-high .510. He’s hit in nine of his last 10 games, hitting .395 with a 1.071 OPS over that stretch. While he is very limited defensively and has only logged four games in right field this season, he’s finally elevating the ball often enough to have put himself in consideration for a spot on the big league roster. … Speaking of right field, Eguy Rosario was initially scheduled to make his first professional appearance in the outfield but was a late scratch in favor of Cal Mitchell. The Rancho Bernardo native went 2-for-4 with a double and has now hit in 11 of 12 games himself. His .283/.370/.496 line is 13% above league average production. Given his more well-rounded skill set, he might also be a consideration if the Padres decide to go to the El Paso roster for outfield reinforcements. … Xander Bogaerts went 0-for-3 with a pair of walks and a strikeout in his third rehab game. He was back in the DH slot Saturday as he works back from a broken shoulder. … Jhony Brito allowed five earned runs on six hits, two walks, and a hit batter as he labored through 2.1 innings on 61 pitches. While his four-seamer and sinker both averaged 97 mph, he got just three whiffs in 16 swings against the two fastballs. He’ll look to get better results as he continues to stretch out to provide the big league club more starting options. … Big righty Sean Reynolds turned in a season-high 3.2 innings as the Chihuahuas bullpen blanked Albuquerque for the final 6.2 frames to give the offense time for the comeback. Reynolds struck out six and walked only one. That’s three straight strong outings for Reynolds, who’s struck out 11 against only two walks in his last 7.2 innings.
The Missions were rained out
San Antonio’s game got washed out Saturday night and was officially canceled rather than being rescheduled. That will give them three consecutive days off before they resume their homestand on Tuesday.

Key Stats: CF Homer Bush Jr. 3-for-5; 1B Romeo Sanabria 2-for-4, 2B, BB; C Anthony Vilar 1-for-5, HR (6), 3 RBI; RHP Dylan Lesko 5 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 5 K, 4 BB, HBP, 3 WP; RHP Braden Nett 3 IP, H, ER, 4 K, BB
Prospect Watch: While he wasn’t quite as sharp as in several recent outings, Dylan Lesko had a solid outing going through the first five innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits. But the righty came back out for the sixth, gave up a loud home run, then issued a pair of walks and hit a batter before giving way. All three runners came around to score to close the book on another rough line for the Padres’ top pitching prospect. While opponents are hitting just .222 on the year, he’s walked 45 batters, hit a league-high 12, and uncorked eight wild pitches as he’s struggled through 60.2. … Continuing to work back from his IL stint, Braden Nett tossed a season-high 53 pitches across three innings. The hard-throwing righty had traffic in all three innings but gave up just one run and struck out four. After missing a month, he struck out 13 and walked four in 10 innings. Homer Bush Jr. had three singles, including a pair of bunt hits. The speedster has hit in six straight, going 9-for-23 with four walks and only two strikeouts in the stretch. … Romeo Sanabria had a single, double and drew a walk to push his on-base percentage to .383 in 14 games since his promotion to High-A. The big first baseman hasn’t hit the ball with as much authority as he did in Lake Elsinore, gearing down his swing to go the other way more often. His strikeout rate has crept up to 23.3% at the higher level.

Isaiah Lowe is asserting himself as one of the Padres’ top arms. (Photo: Robert Escalante)
Key Stats: SS Leo De Vries 3-for-5, HR (4), PO; DH Kaden Hollow 1-for-3, 2B, BB; CF Wyatt Hoffman 1-for-3, 2B, BB; RHP Isaiah Lowe 5 IP, 2 H, 7 K, 2 BB
Prospect Watch: Leo De Vries continued his stellar week against the Angels affiliate, connecting on three more hits, including his third homer in two nights. The 17-year-old has hit in six straight, collecting four multi-hit games along the way. He’s 12-for-26 with a pair of doubles and four walks in his current torrid streak, pushing his OPS for the year up from .624 to .738. He’s stolen three bases for good measure while only striking out four times as he shows both the toolset and skills that have had Padres officials so excited about landing the switch-hitting shortstop at the top of this year’s international free agent class. … De Vries’ only competition for Cal League Player of the Week will come from teammate Rosman Verdugo. The 19-year-old infielder got hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance and then took some awkward swings as he struck out twice before giving way in the sixth inning. Even with the quiet day, the Baja California native posted a cool 1.650 OPS for the week. … While the game got away from Lake Elsinore late, Isaiah Lowe turned in another stellar outing as he threw five scoreless innings and struck out seven. The 21-year-old righty has posted a 1.56 ERA across his last six outings, striking out 42 and holding opponents to a sub-.200 average in 34.2 innings. He’s short of the innings needed to appear on league leaderboards, but his 2.70 ERA would be second on the circuit. Lowe continues to overwhelm Cal League hitters with a fastball he can run into the upper 90s and a changeup and breaking ball that both flash plus.
