Key Stats: LHP Ryan Carpenter (L, 2-4) 4.2 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K; LHP Tom Cosgrove 1.1 IP, H, 2 ER, BB, K; DH Brett Sullivan 1-for-4, R; CF Óscar Mercado 1-for-2, HR (7), 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, SF; RF Cal Mitchell 2-for-3, 2 HR (2, 3), 2 R, 3 RBI, BB; 2B Nate Mondou, 2-for-5

Prospect Watch:  Right fielder Cal Mitchell had his best game since joining the Padres’ organization. The Rancho Bernardo High alum, who came into the day with one home run in 33 games connected on a pair of them Wednesday. It was his first multi-homer game in over two years. The last time came a week before he made his MLB debut with the Pirates. The former second-round pick saw his SLG increase from .409 to .469 in one game and boosted his OPS to .848.  … Center fielder Óscar Mercado hit the other home run for El Paso, and now has home runs in back-to-back games for the first time this season.  The 29-year-old has an eight-game hitting streak and has three straight multi-RBI games.  He now leads the team with seven home runs and is third with 24 RBI. … Veteran left-hander Ryan Carpenter got the start for El Paso and lost for the fourth time this season. Carpenter pitched 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs on ten hits. He walked two and struck out three. The long ball has plagued Carpenter this season; he allowed three homers on Wednesday and has now surrendered a league-high 15 big flies in 45.1 innings. The next closest pitcher on the leaderboard has allowed 11.

Missions 4, Wichita Wind Surge 3 (10 innings)

Key Stats: RHP Ryan Bergert 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, K; RHP Reggie Lawson IP, H, BB; LF Cole Cummings 2-for-5, RBI; 3B Marcos Castañon 1-for-4, 2B, RS, BB; RHP Josh Roberson (W, 2-0) IP, H, 2 K; RHP Yovanny Cruz (S, 1) IP, H, K

Cole Cummings continues to deliver big hits for San Antonio. (Photo: San Antonio Missions)

Prospect Watch: It wasn’t pretty but the Missions pulled out a victory despite having only four hits. San Antonio got a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to tie the game, then Cole Cummings had their biggest hit of the night, singling to drive in the Manfred Man in the 10th. The 25-year-old Cummings now has three multi-hit games in his last four games. The undrafted UC Santa Barbara product continues outperforming his previous campaigns and is providing the Missions with a much-needed spark in the middle of their lineup. … Ryan Bergert had his best start in a month, although the overall results weren’t outstanding. Bergert pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. He walked a pair and struck out two. In his first four starts, Bergert walked one and struck out 22.  He has walked nine and struck out six in his four starts since.  The velocity is still there, but the carry on his fastball has decreased and after hitting his spots consistently last year, Bergert has been missing with location. Bergert’s ERA sits at 6.68 after eight starts. … After Bergert left, the Missions’ bullpen held things down, pitching 5.1 scoreless innings. Josh Roberson pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and striking out a pair. The 28-year-old minor league free agent signee has a 2.77 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 13 innings this year.

TinCaps 12, Lansing Lugnuts 5

Jagger Haynes is showing what he’s capable of this month in Fort Wayne. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)

Key Stats: LHP Jagger Haynes (W, 1-3) 7 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 BB, 5 K; RHP Bradgley Rodriguez IP, H, BB, K; DH Ethan Salas 1-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB; LF Tyler Robertson 2-for-3, HR (3), 2B, 2 R, 5 RBI; C Anthony Vilar 2-for-5, R, RBI; 3B Devin Ortiz 3-for-3, R, BB; 2B Nerwilian Cedeño 3-for-4, 2 R, RBI

Prospect Watch: Southpaw Jagger Haynes earned his first professional win in his 18th career start, going seven innings for the first time as a professional. The Lugnut hitters swung early, giving Haynes some quick innings, and helping a guy with location issues stay in the zone. Haynes threw 93 pitches to get through seven innings, 61 of them for strikes. After posting a nightmare 21.21 ERA in April with 10 walks in 4.2 innings, Haynes has a 2.42 ERA with 11 walks in 22 innings across four starts this month. … The one run Haynes allowed was due to a scary play in left field. Albert Fabian raced back on a ball and attempted a leaping catch against the wall, but landed awkwardly and injured his left leg. Fabian, who has been on fire and came in with a minor league-best 18 RBI over the last 9 games, left the game. After initially not being able to put any weight on it at all, Fabian was able to walk off the field with assistance. We will have an update on the injury when one is available. … Tyler Robertson came on to replace Fabian, and wound up having his best game of the year. Robertson connected on a three-run home run, his third of the season, a half inning after entering. An inning later, he came to bat with the bases loaded and delivered a bases-clearing double. A premium athlete, Robertson was considered a breakout candidate after a strong 2023 campaign, but had posting just a .368 OPS over the last three weeks and has lost playing time. With Fabian likely out for at least a few days, this might be an opportunity for the 24-year-old to get back on track. … While Robertson broke the game open, two batters earlier, the suddenly hot Ethan Salas, hit a bases-loaded single to give the TinCaps a 4-1 lead.  While that was his only hit, he did walk twice and scored on Robertson’s double. The youngest player in the Midwest League is starting to feel it. After hitting .171/.282/.234 in his first 30 games, Salas has hit .412/.546/.765 over the last week with 8 runs scored, five RBI, and five walks against only two strikeouts.

Storm 6, San Jose Giants 5 (10 innings)

Key Stats: RHP Jose Luis Reyes 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K; LHP Javier Chacon 2 IP, 4 K; SS Leo De Vries 0-for-5; 1B Romeo Sanabria 2-for-4, HR (6), RBI, BB; 3B Rosman Verdugo 1-for-4, RS, BB; CF Braedon Karpathios 3-for-4, 2 2B, 3B, RS, RBI, BB; LF Wyatt Hoffman 1-for-3, HR (1), 4 RBI

Romeo Sanabria cuts an imposing figure in the box. (Robert Escalante)

Prospect Watch: Even after Romeo Sanabria destroyed the ACL last year with 25 extra-base hits and a 1.060 OPS in 50 games, it didn’t help make many preseason Padres prospect lists. With every passing week, Sanabria is making his case as a legitimate prospect. After posting a .900 OPS in April, Sanabria has a 1.040 OPS in May and is leading the club in most offensive categories. The 22-year-old connected on his sixth homer of the year now has six extra-base hits in his last seven games. Initially drafted as a catcher in the 18th round back in 2022, Sanabria is now exclusively at first-base, but the left-handed slugger has the profile to make it work at a position that demands premium offense. … Another 2022 community college product who has paid dividends for the Storm is Braedon Karpathios. The 20-year-old, who signed as an undrafted free agent, had three extra-base hits and seven total bases to set new career highs. After a slow start to the month, Karpathios now has hits in eight of the last nine games. …  Wyatt Hoffman connected on his second home run in 147 career games. His three-run blast gave the Storm their first lead of the night, then he walked them off with a sacrifice fly to center field in the tenth inning. The club has now won seven of their last 10 games and is back above .500
