The Chihuahuas are off for the Triple-A All-Star Break.

Sod Poodles 7, Midland RockHounds 5

Key Stats: RHP Kyle Lloyd 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K; RHP Michel Baez (W, 3-2) 2 IP, 2 H, 2 K; 3B Hudson Potts 1-4, HR (7), RBI; CF Buddy Reed 1-4, 2B, RS

Prospect Watch: A five-run ninth inning turned a 3-2 deficit to a 7-3 lead.  The Sod Poodles had six runners reach base in the ninth after having only four runners reach base the eight innings before.  The tie-breaking run came into score on an RBI single by Owen Miller, his only hit of the night.  After a walk and pop-up later, SS Peter Van Gansen hit a 2-RBI single to break open the close game.  RHP Michel Baez breezed through his first inning overpowering hitters.  His fastball sat in the mid-90s with good downward movement.  He did give up two hits in his second inning of work, but he never seemed rattled, easily pitching out of the jam.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 5, Storm 0

Key Stats: RHP Javy Guerra IP, 2 K; CF Travis Jankowski 0-4, K; SS Gabriel Arias 1-3; 2B Eguy Rosario 1-3, 2B

Prospect Watch: The game might have been over five pitches into the game when rehabbing Dodgers’ centerfielder AJ Pollock hit a deep home run to give the Quakes the lead.  The Storm including their own rehabbing major leaguer,  Travis Jankowski, could do nothing off of Rancho’s starter Leo Crawford who threw a complete game shutout striking out 10.  RHP Javy Guerra made his first appearance since June 10 and was the lone highlight for the Storm.  He struck out two and sat consistently in the upper 90s.  While his stuff played up, he still needs to improve his fastball command.  Of the 18 pitches he threw, only 10 were for strikes. …With Xavier Edwards being promoted it was a question of how the infield would change to accommodate.  For the first time in his career, Esteury Ruiz played left field.  The 20-year-old was a Cal League All-Star hitting .247/.310/.380 with 29 stolen bases.  However, he had already committed 16 errors in 72 games at second.

The TinCaps had the night off.

Ryan Weathers will toe the rubber tomorrow as he looks to build off his last start.

Dust Devils 5, Spokane Indians 1

Key Stats: LHP Dan Dallas 0.2 IP, 2 K; CF Reinaldo Ilarraza 2-3, 2 BB, 2 SB (12), RS; RHP Ignacio Feliz 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 4 BB, 4 K; 2B Kelvin Melean 2-4, RS, BB, SB (3); 1B Carlos Luis 2-4, 2B, RS, 2 RBI; LF Sean Guilbe 2-4, RS, SB (1)

Prospect Watch: Relievers make their money by getting out of high leverage situations.  Dan Dallas saved the game for Tri-City.  Dallas came into a bases-loaded situation, with one out in the eighth inning and struck out both batters to end the inning. Dallas, who was an NWL All-Star last year, struggled with command in a brief call-up to Fort Wayne earlier this year, but has since righted the ship only walking four over 13 innings, including 13 strikeouts over his last eight innings. … CF Reinaldo Ilarraza spent all of the 2017 season with Fort Wayne hitting .229/.295/.298.  Two years later he finds himself down a level but a different hitter.  Illaraza walked 21 times in 79 games last year, this year in 22 games he already has 27 walks.  With reaching base four more times tonight, Illaraza now has close to a .500 OBP, which leads the league nearly a month into the season.  Overall he has a .241/.482/.345 slash line and has also been seeing time in the outfield this season after being used exclusively as an infielder the past few seasons.

There were no games in the AZL last night.

System Notes: As the Padres’ lone All-Star failed to get in the game, there were some changes happening in the Padres’ system.

Roster Updates: MacKenzie Gore was promoted to Double-A Amarillo, with fellow top prospect Xavier Edwards promoted to Lake Elsinore.  RHP Javy Guerra came off the disabled list to take Gore’s spot.  Other news saw Emmanuel Ramirez promoted to Triple-A El Paso, 1B Connor Panas , who came over from the Toronto Blue Jays in the Clayton Richard trade, was released and Luke Becker was called up from Tri-City to take Edwards’ place on the TinCaps’ roster.  Becker was a ninth-round pick from the 2018 draft.
