Game 2 Wednesday May 22nd 3:40 pm PDT

SD Michael King vs CIN Nick Martinez

Game 3 Thursday May 23rd 10:10 am PDT

SD Matt Waldron vs CIN Frankie Montas

So much for the optimistic initial reports. Further testing revealed a fracture in Bogaerts's shoulder. He's going to miss significant time. Peralta was added to the roster and is in the lineup today.

Kind of strange to have Peralta in LF and Profar at DH. Im thinking that Profar is the better defender.

Good King showed up tonight! And Manny, another 2 doubles!

Profar, Cronenworth, Azocar, Campusano, Wade, Merrill- all continuing to play well. Almost 1/3 of the way in to the season- can they hold up until FTJ and Manny get hot?🤞🏽

Isn't Cincinnati a shoebox? How can we not hit HR's there?

And is Tatis still on his worm killing spree? The kid is getting no lift.

Solid outing by Waldron. Peralta already making a difference. Arraez warming up.

The lower HR output may be the influence of the new hitting coach Victor Rodriguez and Shildt. The team sure has seemed to cut down on the swing for the fences at all times approach to more contact oriented. Fact that Soto is not around and Tatis, Machado, and Bogaerts were all slumping contributes.

However even though the Padres are sitting #22 in HR in AWAY games in MLB (#16 in HOME games) … they are #3 in MLB in runs scored in AWAY games (#16 in HOME games). There wRC+ is #4 in AWAY games (#11 in HOME games).

Bottom line is that they are scoring runs near the top of MLB rankings AWAY from PETCO … and that is the objective.

Waldron just confuses me … and have to keep reminding myself he is the #5 in the starting rotation and, right now, don’t see a better option. If he delivered 50% quality starts that is good for a #5. In his case he seems to be either good or VERY bad yet (by my standards) he has had 6 good starts and 4 bad starts (at least judged by runs allowed).

Today only gave up 2 runs (that is good) and his stat line looks good … but watching the game he had command issues, hard hit balls off him … yet eluded disaster.

I think that this is what you get when the SP is the #5/6 guy and when they are a knuckle baller.

The Knuckle is a fickle pitch. When its one (see ATL game) its nasty. When its off, its horrific to watch and easy to hit.

But for a league min #5 I think we are OK for the moment.

Very good road trip, winning both series and looking pretty good doing so.

Still doesnt quite wash out the bad taste in my mouth from the COL series at home.

I keep thinking as far as #5 Starters go Waldron and Vasquez are “OK”.

But what if we had another guy like King as the #5?

My guess is we have 2-3 more wins easy cause we haven’t won very many that the #5 has started.
