61-44  57-49

Monday July 28 - 6:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Frankie Montas(3-1, 4.62 ERA, 23 K, .270 BAA) vs RHP Dylan Cease(3-10, 4.59 ERA, 144 K, .243 BAA)

Tuesday, July 29 - 6:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
LHP Sean Manaea(1-1, 2.19 ERA, 18 K, .178 BAA) vs RHP Yu Darvish(0-3, 9.18 ERA, 11 K, .309 BAA)

Wednesday, July 30 - 1:10pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Clay Holmes(9-5, 3.40 ERA, 88 K, .239 BAA) vs RHP Nick Pivetta(10-3, 2.81 ERA, 131 K, .199 BAA)

The Padres head home to face a very tough Mets. The upside is that the Mets are 24-28 on the road whereas the Padres are 31-18 at home. The Padres are fortunate to miss Senga.

Former Padre Manaea is pitching alot better than when he was a Padre and is going up against Darvish, who concerns me. The Padres need Darvish to have a solid game. Cease has given up more than 3 runs only twice in 21 starts. Pivetta has been outstanding and has a 1.17 ERA in in 5 games in July and has a 2.07 ERA in 11 starts at Petco.

Top NL West games: Dodgers(61-45) at Reds(56-50), Giants(54-51) host Pirates(44-62)

GO PADRES!

Great reply by the good guys, batting around and scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th after Cease gave up the granny in the top of the 5th.  Go Pads!

Morejon continues to be on fire, throwing only 18 pitches of which 15 were strikes to get through 1.2 innings.

Tatis was outstanding in RF, robbing Vientos of a HR with an amazing catch above the RF wall and then an amazing sliding catch near the RF line in shallow right.   Go Pads!

Padres overcome a grand slam to win a wild one on a walk off.

Good win against the NL East leader ... comeback has to boost the team confidence going forward.

Also the Padre win comes in conjunction with losses by the other Wild Card teams ... Cubs and Phillies. Padres are now only 3 games in the loss column behind PHIL for the 2nd WC slot. Maybe more significant is that CINN lost ... closest pursuit team for a Wild Card slot now falls 2 games in the loss column behind SD. Plus other pursuit teams lost falling further behind: SF; AZ; MIA. SF is now behind by 4 games in the loss column (so is STL) as the next teams chasing the Padres.

Cease was solid throught 4 IP than collapsed.

Bergert pitching tonight. Darvish Tomorrow. The Padres chance just got better tonight.

King says he is 100%. Could be back early August.

I would like to take a moment to remember the Cubs Ryne Sandberg, one of the great 2nd baseman in MLB history. He passed away of cancer on Monday.

I am a bit skeptical about "early" August ... first he has not pitched in two months and now only a simulated game ... even if healthy he effectively is in early ST and more than likely needs a few weeks (and one or two rehabs) to return to effectiveness ... effectiveness is the key here. Thinking more along the lines of "late" August.

As long as the Padres remain in the WC slot ... Pivetta, Vasquez, Kolek, Cease, Darvish ... and maybe Bergert can hold the SP fort. Just want a healthy / effective King down the stretch and in the playoffs ... not risk any chance of renewed injury by a too soon return.
