72-71      78-65

Monday, September 8 - 6:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
LHP Nick Lodolo(8-7, 3.22 ERA, 130 K, .228 BAA) vs RHP Yu Darvish(3-5, 3.75 ERA, 48 K, .230 BAA)

Tuesday, September 9 - 6:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Zack Littell(9-8, 3.81 ERA, 116 K, .253 BAA) vs RHP Michael King(4-2, 2.81 ERA, 65 K, .206 BAA)

Wednesday, September 10 - 5:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
LHP Andrew Abbott(8-6, 2.88 ERA, 130 K, .231 BAA) vs RHP Nick Pivetta(13-5, 2.85 ERA, 172 K, .192 BAA)

The Padres head home 1 game behind the Dodgers. They open a 7-game homestand against the Reds, who took 2 of 3 from them in Cincinnati, and then a 4-games series against the Rockies. The Reds are 4 games behind the Mets, who currently hold the 3rd wild card spot, and will be fighting for a wild card spot. The Padres will be up against tough pitching, but will be fortunate to miss their top pitcher Hunter Greene.

Game 2 was Cortes(IL) spot in the rotation. I hope whoever replaces him, it's not Sears. There are good matchups in this series and Abbott vs Pivetta will be a good one.

While the Padres are playing the Reds, the Dodgers will be hosting the Rockies. In game 3, they will be facing Freeland, who shutdown the Padres. I hope he does the same to the Dodgers.

The Padres have 19 games left. If they are going to finish with 93 wins like last year, then they will have to go 15-4 the rest of the way.

Reports suggest King will be activated to start game 2.

Have to hope he is on form and pitches effectively.
If Pivetta remains effective the return of King will make a solid 1-2 for the playoffs. Then Darvish - Cease - Vasquez (whoever is hot) vs the opponent’s 3-5 should be OK.  Still have hope that the last 3 can produce a winning effort given this pen.

Kudos to Preller for the adds of Laureano, O’Hearn, and Fermin … all of whom have significantly upgraded weak spots in the offense.

Padres would be really winning IF Machado, Tatis, and Merrill did not each dip into long, deep slumps. The extreme hot-cold is tough to translate into top line winning. Just hope all are hot in the playoffs … and that could happen!

King is pitching on Tuesday according to Fox News and is also listed in the probable pitchers section in the padres.com website. I am glad he is back.
