Prospect Watch: Friday’s game was a PCL special. The Chihuahuas fell behind 5-0 before scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. The Isotopes score twice in the seventh and one more in the eighth to take the lead. However, pinch-hitter Marcos Castañon belted a three-run homer to give El Paso a walk-off victory. … The homer was Castañon’s third of the season. The 26-year-old has had to navigate a veteran-laden infield for playing time, but he’s produced when given a chance. In eight games, the Rialto native is hitting .269/.367/.654. … Clay Dungan had three hits, ending an 0-for-16 start to the season. He had three singles and scored a run in the victory. The 29-year-old re-signed with the Padres this offseason after reaching minor league free agency. He provides positional flexibility and had an .816 OPS last season for El Paso. … Griffin Canning continued his build-up Friday night and tossed 3.1 innings before departing. The veteran righty threw 62 pitches, 36 for strikes, while averaging 94.7 mph with his four-seam fastball. The former Angel and Met starter will likely need at least one more start in the minors before returning to San Diego. … Garrett Hawkins recorded the final four outs of the evening to earn his first win of the season. He allowed just one hit while striking out one. Hawkins, 26, has averaged roughly 95 mph with his fastball in the early part of the season, but he hasn’t generated a lot of whiffs. Despite not looking dominant, he’s allowed two hits in 4.1 innings.

Prospect Watch: The Missions plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 1-0 lead. San Antonio has lost five straight and is 1-6. … Ethan Salas started at designated hitter and reached base twice. He singled and drew a walk in four plate appearances. It was the first game this season that Salas reached base twice. In six games this season, Salas is hitting .158/.238/.211. … Despite the Missions’ poor performance offensively, they received a pair of splendid pitching performances. Miguel Mendez started the game and completed four shutout innings, allowing just three hits. He walked two and struck out six. He worked up to 71 pitches, throwing 47 for strikes. The 23-year-old has allowed just one run in 7.2 innings in his first two starts. Mendez has a shot to pitch in San Diego this season, should a need arise for another starter. … Eric Yost relieved Mendez, and he was just as sharp. The 23-year-old broke out as a starter last season with the TinCaps before earning a late-season promotion to the Missions. Prospect Watch: The TinCaps have had their share of cold-weather games to open the 2026 campaign, but the atmosphere has been nowhere as cold as their bats. Fort Wayne lost on Friday, managing just seven hits. Through seven games, Fort Wayne has scored just 10 runs. They’ve scored one run four times, and the team is hitting a collective .164/.278/.236. Fort Wayne’s team OPS of .514 is the fifth-worst in all of Minor League Baseball. … Alex McCoy has been the one TinCap hitter who has swung the bat well, and that trend continued Friday. McCoy had a pair of singles, raising his average to .300 and his OPS to .814. He’s struck out just three times in 22 plate appearances. … Kash Mayfield tossed four hitless innings, walking three and striking out four. Despite the three walks, the young lefty was in the strike zone most of the night, throwing 44 of his 69 pitches for strikes. In two starts, spanning seven innings, Mayfield has yet to allow a hit. … Lefty Braian Salazar took over for Mayfield and pitched well but wound up as a hard-luck loser. The 20-year-old allowed a double in the sixth, and that run came around to score on a sacrifice fly. Salazar posted gaudy strikeout numbers with the Storm last year, but he couldn’t consistently locate his fastball. In a very small but encouraging sample, the young lefty has struck out eight batters while walking just one in five innings of work.

Prospect Watch: Rancho Cucamonga jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and hung on to defeat the Storm in front of a crowd of just over 3,000 at The Diamond. … Kruz Schoolcraft made his Lake Elsinore home debut, and like his first start, it was a disaster. After lasting just one inning in his season debut last week, Schoolcraft recorded just one out before departing. He walked the first batter of the game before inducing a fielder’s choice. After a Bradley Frye error, Schoolcraft balked in the first run of the game. Schoolcraft walked another batter and allowed a pair of singles before departing. Overall, the 18-year-old allowed four runs (three earned), walking two while failing to record a strikeout. Through two starts, the former first-rounder has allowed a staggering nine earned runs over 1.1 innings – good for a 67.50 ERA.
