Prospect Watch: A warm and rainy night led to a 37-minute delay and ultimately a Chihuahuas loss in a game that was shortened to six innings. … The El Paso offense managed just two hits, one a single off the bat of Yonathan Perlaza to extended his hitting streak to six games. Since hitting .189/.260/.305 in May, the 26-year-old has hit .300 and posted an on-base percentage north of .400 every month since. Thus far in September, the El Paso slugger is hitting .316/.372/.474. … Logan Gillaspie struggled mightily Friday night, taking his third loss of the season. He allowed seven runs on six hits across 3.1 innings, walking two and striking out a pair. The veteran is working as a starter for the first time since 2019, when he was in High-A in the Brewers organization. The former Oxnard College righty has typically pitched well as a multi-inning reliever, but has not been able to get the same results in the rotation. After Friday’s start, he is carrying a 7.51 ERA as a starter, as opposed to a 3.71 ERA out of the bullpen. The Bakersfield native is one of a very few players who has made the big leagues after playing in the Pecos League. … With a number of pitchers down because of injury or shuttling back-and-forth to the big league club, the organization has had to fill gaps on the pitching staffs of its two active clubs. That led to this year’s 14th-round pick, Clay Edmondson, making his Triple-A debut Friday. The righty out of UNC Asheville tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball, walking one and notching a strikeout. Edmondson pitched in six games for the Storm this year and will be in the mix for a role in Lake Elsinore or Fort Wayne to open 2026.

Roster Moves: The Chihuahuas’ pitching staff received additional reinforcement as righty Maikel Miralles was added to the roster along with Edmondson. Lefties Wes Benjamin and Miguel Cienfuegos were transferred to the development list. Righty Bryan Hoeing went back on the IL a week after he had been activated, while Kleiber Olmedo was briefly transferred on, and then back off, the roster without making an appearance.

Springfield Cardinals 4, Missions 3

Key Statistics: 2B Eguy Rosario 1-for-3, R, BB, SB (1); SS Anthony Vilar 1-for-2, R, 2 BB, RBI; RF Damon Dues 2-for-3, BB, RBI, SB (6); RHP Miguel Mendez (L, 0-4) 2.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 K; RHP Josh Mallitz 2 IP, H, BB, K; RHP Kevin Kopps IP, 2 H, K

Prospect Watch: Righty Miguel Mendez allowed three runs, including a two-run homer, in the first inning and the Missions couldn’t muster a comeback as they lost to the Cardinals. The wiry right-hander got through the second inning without an issue, but was lifted after reaching 55 pitches in the third inning. Overall, Mendez allowed five hits and hit a batter as he labored through 2.1 innings, though he struck out three Cardinals. Despite struggling in Double-A as he extended to a career-high 95 innings, Friday capped an impressive breakout campaign for the 23-year-old. Mendez began the season in Lake Elsinore before dominating with the TinCaps enough to force the organization to promote him to San Antonio. Despite an ERA over eight during 22.1 inning stint with the Missions, Mendez pitched to a 3.22 mark in 21 starts between the three teams, striking out 118 while significantly improving his command. … Josh Mallitz tossed another pair of scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk while notching a strikeout. The 23-year-old has thrown the ball well since joining the Missions. In four appearances, spanning 6.1 innings, the 2024 undrafted free agent has not allowed a run. On the year, he posted a solid 26.2% strikeout rate with a stellar 5.6% walk rate while holding opponents to a .224 average. …Damon Dues has been productive since joining the Padres’ system, and Friday was no exception. The Missions’ outfielder had a pair of singles, a walk, and he added a stolen base for good measure. Dues signed out of Mexico in August to add depth for San Antonio. In 21 games, the 27-year-old has an .867 OPS and six stolen bases. Dues originally began his career as a middle infielder when the Giants signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2021. Since San Francisco released him last year, he had stints in the Atlantic League, a winter appearance in Puerto Rico, and a month with Union Laguna in Mexico.
