Players of the week: Nate Mondou had a big week, hitting .526 with 10 hits, three of them doubles, and four walks against the Los Angeles Dodgers’ affiliate. The 30-year-old, who returned to El Paso as a minor league free agent for a second season, has a slash line of .313/.404/.407 line on the year while seeing time mainly at second base. He has also logged innings at first and third base. His .404 on-base percentage is fourth in the Pacific Coast League this year. … Alek Jacob, 27, made three appearances of one inning each and didn’t allow a single run and only one hit, while striking out four against three walks. The right-hander has not allowed a run in 11 appearances since June 25. Over 13 innings in that stretch, he has posted 21 strikeouts against six walks. In July, PCL hitters managed just a .077 batting average against him, and so far in August, that mark is at .133.

Top Prospects and Others of Note: The Chihuahuas got some incredible production out of their catching corps as Rodolfo Durán, 27, hit .462 with an OPS of 1.687 in 15 plate appearances and Luis Campusano joined him with a 1.189 OPS as he had a pair of doubles and a home run among his seven hits. Campusano also got a game in at first base, along with being behind the plate and at DH. The 27-year-old continues to post one of the best years in the PCL at the plate. Durán has also been a nice pick-up, replicating what he did last year between Double-A and Triple-A in the Kansas City Royals organization, with a .791 OPS. The club’s third catcher, Cody Roberts, 29, also collected five hits in his two games. … Recently acquired Will Wagner hit .429 in 26 plate appearances with a triple and a home run while seeing time at both second and third base. After a strong big league debut in 2024, the 27-year-old left-handed hitter opened the year in the Blue Jays’ lineup, and was sent out to Triple-A where he posted a .793 OPS. … Mason McCoy rounded out the group that had an OPS over 1.000 this week with six hits in 23 plate appearances to go along with five walks and three stolen bases. McCoy’s ticket back to the major leagues is being a plus defender at shortstop, but the 30-year-old is also having one of the best offensive seasons of his career with an .826 OPS. … Omar Cruz, 26, got into two games, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and giving up one walk while striking out three. The lefty has posted a 3.90 ERA in relief for the Chihuahuas this year. … Kyle Hart who opened the season in the big league rotation, continues to perform well in the bullpen. The 32-year-old lefty allowed only one run in four innings across two appearances. This year, as a starter for the Chihuahuas, he has a 5.40 ERA in 70 innings, but in a much more limited sample size of 20.2 innings, he’s dropped it to 2.18 with 17 strikeouts against five walks. San Antonio Missions (Lost to Springfield Cardinals, 1-5)

Miguel Mendez has been the system’s biggest breakout in 2025. (Photo: Rey Holguin)

Players of the week: Another week, and yet another dominant start from Miguel Mendez. The right-hander allowed just two unearned runs on one hit over six innings, walking four, while striking out a career-high 11 batters in his Double-A debut. Mendez’s fastball was once again electric while he showed two impressive sliders. The 23-year-old has had a stellar year, posting a 1.60 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 78.2 innings across three levels. After entering the year with a career walk rate nearing 15%, he’s cut that to 10.1% this season. … Marcos Castañon was a bright spot in the San Antonio lineup, going 6-for-17 with four RBIs and six walks to continue a solid 2025 season at the dish. The Missions infielder has posted a 124 wRC+, .351 wOBA, and a .764 OPS across 335 at-bats. The 26-year-old has been particularly hot over the last 15 games, posting a 199 wRC+, .468 wOBA, and hit .365 since July 25. Subscribers can read our latest interview with Castañon.

Top Prospects and Others of Note: After an impressive Double-A debut, Eric Yost once again flashed in his second career start for San Antonio. The righty allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out four. In total, Yost generated 11 swings and misses and a 28.9% whiff rate. Yost’s curveball remains his best offering, getting -12” to -13” induced vertical break and -11” to -12” horizontal break. There is a real argument that Yost has been the most consistent starter in the Padres’ system this season. In 99.2 innings between two levels, he’s posted a 2.71 ERA, 3.43 FIP, 23% K%, and a 3.69 xFIP. … Garrett Hawkins extended his scoreless innings streak to an almost unfathomable 38 innings with two more innings of work. The 25-year-old allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out two. The last time Hawkins allowed an earned run? All the way back on April 27. Over a combined 48 innings between Fort Wayne San Antonio, Hawkins owns a 1.31 ERA, 1.99 FIP, and a stellar 36.9% strikeout rate against a 8.0% walk rate. … Andrew Moore made a pair of appearances, allowing no runs, no hits, walking three, and striking out three across three innings. Over his pair of appearances, the right-hander posted a 34.7% whiff rate. Command still eludes him too often, as Moore has posted an untenable 21.6% walk rate since arriving in San Antonio. However, over his last 22.1 innings of work, Moore has posted a 2.82 ERA and 32.7% strikeout rate. … Romeo Sanabria‘s struggles persisted as the first baseman went 2-for-17 with two RBIs and two walks. Dating back to July 13, Sanabria is hitting just .197 with a 64 wRC+ and .259 wOBA. (Clark Fahrenthold)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost to South Bend Cubs, 1-5)

Braden Karpathios has done damage to the pull side this year. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)

Player of the Week: In a bleak week for the TinCaps, Braedon Karpathios continued to shine. The outfielder went 9-for-22 with two doubles, three walks, and a stolen base. The 22-year-old is hitting .394/.474/.545 for the month and now leads the team with a .795 OPS on the season. … No starter managed to go five innings or allow fewer than four runs, so by default, the pitcher of the week came from the bullpen. Josh Mallitz tossed 3.1 scoreless innings and allowed only one baserunner while striking out three. The undrafted free agent out of Mississippi has now been scoreless in nine of his last 10 High-A outings dating back to May 7, with a two-month injury sandwiched in there.

Top Prospects and Others of Note: In his first full week with the TinCaps, Lamar King Jr. had five hits over three games, including his first extra-base hit on Sunday. After starting 0-for-6, King went 5-for-13. … Rosman Verdugo had only hit one home run in six weeks, but went out on Tuesday and hit his 12th of the season. The home run tied him with Karpathios for the team lead. The Ensenada native had five hits and two walks in the week and stole his first base since June 20. While the 20-year-old has struggled to hit for average, his .364 OBP leads the team. … With the departure of two shortstops, Ryan Jackson has taken over the job well. For the week, he walked four times, had five hits, scored three, and drove in two. Since joining the TinCaps, the 23-year-old has a .389 OBP. … The TinCaps’ only win came thanks in large part to a Jack Costello three-run home run. It was his sixth home run of the season for the former USD Torero, who has a .607 OPS in his first full season in the minors. …Kasen Wells enjoyed his first full week in High-A. The speedster went 6-for-20 with two doubles and two walks. In his first year in the organization, the 22-year-old has 31 steals and a .383 OBP between two levels. … Sean Barnett was the DH for three games this week.  He reached base in all three games, going 2-for-11 with a double and two walks. Barnett hasn’t pitched in a game since July 23. He had given up 19 earned runs over his previous five innings. … Coming back from injury, Harry Gustin twirled two perfect innings, striking out three. The 23-year-old was making his second appearance since missing over a month on the IL. On the season, Gustin has a 2.56 ERA and a 10.8 K/9. … It was far from his best start of the season, but Luis Gutierrez managed to pitch six innings for the second straight start. The 22-year-old tied a season high by allowing four runs on eight hits in the start. Despite the rough start, Gutierrez is nearing 100 innings for the first time in his career and has a 3.35 ERA on the season. … The good news for Ian Koenig was tossing a career-high seven innings. The bad news was that he also gave up a career-worst six earned runs. The 24-year-old has a 5.51 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 80 innings this season. … Isaiah Lowe continued to struggle, but at least he is being consistent. For the second consecutive start Lowe allowed four earned runs, on five hits, four free passes, with four strikeouts in five innings. After a breakout 2024 campaign, Lowe has struggled to a 5.65 ERA over 79.2 innings. (Ben Davey)

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost at Rancho Cucamonga 2-4)

Alex McCoy has shown he can dominate at the plate. (Photo: Artur Ivanov)

Top Performers: The Storm dropped four of six in Rancho Cucamonga and fell four games behind the 66ers with 24 games left to play. It was a miserable week for the Storm offense, as the club hit a collective .168/.271/.247, with just one player posting an OPS of .700. … Alex McCoy had a monster week for Lake Elsinore, as the 23-year-old looks to emerge as another uncovered gem. For the week, the Storm outfielder hit .409/.480/.864 with a pair of homers and two triples. McCoy missed time with a quad injury, but he’s hit well this year for the Storm. In 158 plate appearances, the former Hofstra outfielder has a wRC+ of 138 and six homers. The Storm lost many productive hitters to trade and promotion, leaving McCoy as the clear best hitter left for the Storm. … Righty Vic Domingo appeared in a pair of games last week, tossing 3.1 perfect innings and striking out five Quakes in the process. The former British Columbia pitcher has quietly been a solid contributor out of the bullpen for the Storm all season. He has a 3.72 ERA/3.36 FIP and a solid 32% K-rate. He was drafted in the 19th round last season.

Top Prospects and Others of Note: Outfielder Ryan Wideman made his professional debut and went 4-for-18 in five games. The Padres’ third-round pick in July struck out six times without a walk. … Shortstop Jorge Quintana got into five games, hitting .158/.273/.211 with eight strikeouts in five games. Last week marked the 18-year-old’s first trip through the Single-A level after playing the complex league for the Brewers. The switch-hitting infielder posted a .752 OPS in Arizona. … Outfielder Kavares Tears had a quiet week at the plate, as his struggles continue. In five games, Tears went 2-for-20 with eight punchouts. Over his last 30 games, the former University of Tennessee star is hitting .190/.333/.276 with a 32% K-rate. He also has not connected on a homer during the rough stretch. He still leads the Storm with nine homers. … Reliever Johan Moreno had another nice week, tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed three hits, walking one and striking out seven. The 22-year-old has tossed 65.1 innings out of the bullpen, pitching to a 4.68 ERA. … Lefty Kash Mayfield tossed four innings, allowing a pair of runs. He walked three and struck out five. The organization has been conservative with Mayfield down the stretch – he hasn’t thrown more than five innings in a start since May. The 20-year-old has looked dominant at times this season but has tossed just 44.1 innings in 2025. (Kevin Charity)
