Chihuahuas 5, Round Rock Express 2

Key Statistics:  3B Will Wagner 1-for-5; DH Luis Campusano 2-for-2, 2Bs, 2 BB; 2B Nate Mondou 1-for-4, HR (2), 3 RBI; RF Ripken Reyes 1-for-3, 2B, BB; LHP Miguel Cienfuegos 3 IP, 3 H, 3 K; LHP Omar Cruz (W, 2-4) 4 H, 2 R, BB, 3 K; RHP Alek Jacob 2 IP, H, BB, 3 K; RHP Sean Reynolds (S,2) 1 IP, K

Prospect Watch: Luis Campusano opened the scoring with a two-run line drive double to left field and later scored in the fifth inning on Nate Mondou’s three-run home run. After not going anywhere at the trade deadline and not getting called up to the big leagues, he continued to do what he has done all year in the PCL: rake. He reached base four times, including a pair of doubles. The Georgia native is second in the PCL with a .976 OPS and has 34 extra-base hits in 69 games as he continues to rotate between catcher, first base, and DH. … Swingman Miguel Cienfuegos got the start in a bullpen game and delivered one of his better outings of the season. The lefty threw three shutout innings and threw 33 of his 49 pitches for strikes before giving way. The 28-year-old Canadian got both his sinker and four-seam fastball up to 95 on the night. … Even after the flurry of trades at the deadline, the Chihuahuas still have plenty of bullpen arms that could help the big club later in the year.  Neither Alek Jacob nor Sean Reynolds have had eye-popping numbers in El Paso, but the duo – who combined for three scoreless innings to lock down the victory Saturday – are both viable big league options. Reynolds, who struck out 22 against eight walks in 22.2 innings for San Diego earlier this year, picked up his second save for the Chihuahuas. He needed only eight pitches to complete a perfect inning and strike out one.

Roster Notes: Forrest Wall, 29, opted out of his contract and was given his release Saturday. The Rockies’ 2014 first-round pickhad brief appearances with the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins before signing with San Diego as a minor league free agent in the offseason.  He had a slash line of .298/.384/.429 in 238 plate appearances for El Paso.

Prospect Watch: Eric Yost, 22, and Garrett Hawkins were stellar in their Double-A debuts, while Marcos Castañon smashed two home runs to provide all the offense the Missions would need. … Yost, who had a 2.89 ERA in 87.1 innings with the TinCaps, only allowed two hits on the evening while striking out five against a pair of walks. The righty out of Northeastern University carried a shutout into the seventh inning, but gave way after a one-out walk on his 84th pitch of the night. The righty, who works off of a stellar sweeper, has made big strides since the Padres drafted him in the 17th round in 2023. … Hawkins, 25, worked a pair of scoreless innings with three strikeouts to pick up the save in his first outing for the Missions. He has now worked 28 straight innings without allowing a run dating back to April 23. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Canadian has been blowing away batters with a fastball that sits in the high 90s and a big sweeper. In Fort Wayne, he struck out 60 batters in 44 innings against 13 walks. Hawkins was an interesting prospect as a starter, but after Tommy John surgery, which cost him to miss nearly two full seasons, he slid into the bullpen has dominated. … Castañon opened the scoring with a solo shot in the fourth, then connected on a three-run blast in the sixth as part of a three-hit night. Castañon has 10 home runs on the year, which now leads the club following the trade of Brandon Valenzuela. The right-handed hitting infielder is a much better hitter away from Nelson Wolff Stadium with a slash line of .295/.331/.476 on the road.

Great Lakes Loons 18, TinCaps 3

Key Statistics: RF Braedon Karpathios 3-for-4; 2B Zach Evans 2-for-4, 3 RBI; 3B Ryan Jackson 1-for-3; RHP Will Varmette (L, 1-2) 3.2 IP 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 5 K

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps gave up 18 runs and 19 hits as position player Kaden Hollow – who got the final out – was the only one of the six Fort Wayne pitchers to escape without allowing a run. Offensively, things weren’t much better as the home team was held to six singles, five of them by Braedon Karpathios and Zach Evans. … Evans got off to a great start in his High-A debut, driving in all three of his team’s runs with a pair of hits. The Buffalo, New York, native led the Storm with 112 hits before his promotion, posting a slash line of .296/.367/.377. While he has spent most of his time at third base, he has also seen action at shortstop, second, and first.  In his senior year before the Padres drafted him in the ninth round last year, he had 28 extra-base hits in 51 games at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne. … With the departure of Leo De Vries and Brandon Butterworth, Karpathios now leads the TinCaps with 79 hits and 130 total bases. His .249/.370/.410 slash line, which is nearly identical to his four-year career OPS of .780 across 1176 plate appearances. The left-handed hitter added three hits Saturday as he continues to look to find the balance between more frequent contact and getting to his above-average power in games.

Inland Empire 66ers 14, Storm 7

Key Statistics: SS Dylan Grego 0-for-3, 2 BB, SB (1), K; 3B Kerrington Cross 3-for-4, RBI; LF Alex McCoy 2-for-3, HR (3), RBI, 2 BB; C Yoiber Ocopio 2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI; PH-RF Colton Vincent 2-for-2; RF-CF Kavares Tears 2-for-5, RBI;  RHP Bryan Balzer 2 IP 5 H, $ R, BB, HR; RHP Kannon Kemp 2.0 IP 5 H, 7, R, 3 BB, 2K

Prospect Watch: Bryan Balzer and Kannon Kemp got roughed up for 11 earned runs in the first four innings as the Storm got blown out to fall a game behind the 66ers. Down 14-2 going into the eighth, they were able to put five runs on the board over the final two frames to close the final gap slightly. … The 6-foot-6 Kemp, was seen as an upside pick when the Padres drafted him out of high school in Texas in 2023 as he was growing into his body. After missing all of last season with a shoulder injury, he has shown some flashes this year, but this was the fourth time in five games he has allowed five runs. ,,, Balzer, also 20 and coming off injury, has had a similar rollercoaster ride with the Storm. The righty, a popular breakout pick this spring, has been thrown into the fire against competition that is exponentially better than anything he has previously faced. … Alex McCoy, 23, had a strong night, collecting his third homer of the year while reaching base four times. The 6-foot-6, 260-pound outfielder missed much of the year to a leg injury, but will be relied on as a middle-of-the-lineup producer over the rest of the year for Elsinore. The Baltimore native was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Hoftstra last year. … Kerrington Cross, had three hits in his second professional game. A monster year for the Cincinnati Bearcats got the 23-year-old a chance as the Padres’ seventh-round pick last month. A big question coming out of the draft is whether he can stick at third base. Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline, called out the tremendous makeup of Cross, who already earned his degree in chemical engineering.
