Key Statistics: LHP Jackson Wolf (W, 4-1) 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 8 K; RHP Bryan Hoeing (H, 2) 2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K; RHP Francis Peña IP, K; SS Clay Dungan 2-for-5, 2B, 2 R; CF Forrest Wall 2-for-4, R, 2 RBI; 1B Nate Mondou 3-for-3, BB
Prospect Watch: El Paso shut down Sugar Land in a low-scoring affair thanks in large part to Jackson Wolf, who struck out eight batters in six innings. Wolf, the Padres’ 2021 fourth round pick, has mostly gotten his career back on track in 2025 save for a June in which the southpaw posted an 11.57 ERA in five starts. Wolf has found his stuff again this month, posting a 3.32 mark in four July starts. … Bryan Hoeing contributed two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four. The 28-year-old righty began the season on the injured list, and after rehab stints in the desert, San Antonio, and El Paso, rejoined the big league club in late June. He was optioned to the Chihuahuas last week after seven appearances for the San Diego bullpen. He’ll continue to sharpen his repertoire until his next return to the big leagues. … Clay Dungan was the offensive spark plug, going 2-for-5 with a double in the leadoff spot and scoring a pair of runs while earning an RBI. The 29-year-old infielder is batting .272 with an .820 OPS in 357 at-bats with El Paso in 2025. … Another well-traveled minor league vet had a solid game as Forrest Wall went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. The 35th overall pick of the 2014 draft by Colorado, Wall has posted an .802 OPS in 231 at-bats this year, his first in the Padres organization after stints in six other systems in the past decade.

Key Statistics: RHP Eric Yost 3.2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K; RHP Will Varmette 3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 5 K, HBP; RHP Nick Wissman 0.1 IP; 3B Ryan Jackson 2-for-4, 2B Brandon Butterworth 2-for-4
Prospect Watch: The TinCaps were blanked by Cedar Rapids as they seemed to be outworked in all phases of the game. Starter Eric Yost had a rare off outing, failing to make it through four innings for the first time since his first start of the year. The righty labored through 70 pitches, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks in just 3.2 innings. Nick Wissman came on and got the only batter he faced to get Fort Wayne out of the fourth inning and to Will Varmette. The righty threw three-plus innings of four-run ball as he continues to work to deploy his premium slider most effectively. The 22-year-old Varmette started nine games with Lake Elsinore this year, but has worked exclusively in a piggyback role since joining Fort Wayne. This was his third straight appearance behind Yost. … Ryan Jackson collected a pair of singles, going 2-for-4 on the evening. The USC alum is batting .289 with an .828 OPS in 2025, splitting time between Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne. Despite not drawing one Saturday, Jackson retains the minor league lead with 74 walks on the year. … Brandon Butterworth was the only other Fort Wayne player to have a multi-hit night, also going 2-for-4. The 22-year-old infielder, a 2024 12th-round pick, has shown intriguing promise in 2025 with a .769 OPS and 10 home runs in 327 at-bats.

Prospect Watch: The Storm were slow out of the gate and only lost momentum from there as they dropped a blowout to Stockton. Bryan Balzer started and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out two across 2.2 innings. The Japanese righty has struck out 39 batters in 36.2 innings in his first taste of full-season ball, but has allowed 43 hits and owns a 7.61 ERA on the year. The righty hasn’t gone more than three innings since a month-long stint on the shelf in June. … The bright spot on the pitching line was Tanner Smith, who recorded four of his five outs by way of the strikeout in a scoreless outing. The hard-throwing reliever, who was drafted in the 15th round last year as he recovered from Tommy John surgery, has thrived since joining the Storm in June. The 22-year-old owns a 0.69 ERA in eight appearances with Lake Elsinore and has struck out a third of the Cal League batters he has faced. … At the plate, Cobb Hightower did his best to get things going in the leadoff spot, going 2-for-5 and driving in a pair of runs. The 2024 third round pick is batting .215 with a .636 OPS in 144 at-bats for the Storm in his first professional season. … Kale Fountain went 1-for-4 and scored a pair of runs as the 2024 fifth-rounder works to get going in Lake Elsinore. The Sioux Falls native is batting .195 in 41 at-bats with the Storm since getting promoted on July 9 after posting a .262 mark in rookie ball.
