Key Stats: CF Brandon Lockridge 1-for-5, 2B, RBI; C Luis Campusano 2-for-5; DH Yonathan Perlaza 2-for-4, 2B, R, BB; RF Tim Locastro 3-for-5, 3B, 2 R, RBI; 3B Mike Brosseau 3-for-5, 2B, RBI; LHP Miguel Cienfuegos 3 IP, 7 H, 8 R (6 ER), 4 K, BB; RHP Kevin Kopps 0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, BB
Prospect Watch: After taking an early 2-0 lead, the Chihuahuas gave up 17 runs over five innings to turn the game into a rout. Tim Locastro led the offense with three hits, including his second triple in three games. The 32-year-old, who has logged 290 big league games with four different teams, is hitting .295/.389/.478 with El Paso this year. His OPS was 70 points higher for the Chihuahuas last year before he went down with a shoulder injury which cost him the final two months of the season. … Mike Brosseau also had a three-hit game for El Paso. The 31-year-old struggled to the tune of a .576 OPS in June, but has already reached base six times and collected 13 total bases in his first two July games. The third baseman collected his 12th double of this year, which already tops his total 102 games split between two organizations last year. … Luis Campusano, had another multi-hit game and now has 13 hits over his last nine games with El Paso. Defensively, things weren’t nearly as pretty as the Isotopes stole four bases in as many attempts and Campusano committed two throwing errors in the process. The 26-year-old has a stellar 1.045 OPS in Triple-A this season, but concern about his work behind the plate has cost him opportunities with the big league club.

Key Stats: RHP Victor Lizarraga 2 IP, 2 BB; LHP Ryan Och 1.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 K, BB; 2B Marcos Castañon 2-for-3, 2B, HR (8), 2 RBI, BB; LF Kai Murphy 1-for-3, BB; C Brandon Valenzuela 0-for-4
Prospect Watch: Marcos Castañon homered for the first time in a month and reached base three times for the first time since June 7. The 26-year-old got off to a strong start this year, getting his OPS up to .864 on June 4, but then hit just .147 over the rest of the month. He’ll hope that Wednesday night’s affair is the start of a breakout at the plate. After hitting .284/.345/.468 in 2023, Castañon hit .227 and saw his OPS plummet to .688 last year in his first Double-A campaign. A double and home run in this one raised his average to .264 on the year with a .747 OPS. … Romeo Sanabria went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts for the third consecutive game. The big first baseman has seen his average plummet 40 points over the last three weeks as he deals with his first extended struggles as a professional. The 23-year-old had, until very recently, been carrying a career-best strikeout rate. … Victor Lizarraga is slowly building back up after leaving his start three weeks ago. After missing two weeks, he returned to throw a scoreless inning in Midland last week. He was allowed to go two innings in this one, stretching out to 32 pitches while still being closely monitored. Lizarraga, who attended Montgomery High in Chula Vista before moving to Mexico to sign as an international free agent, struggled badly to open the year. Since the start of June, however, the 21-year-old has allowed only two runs over 14.2 innings despite an uninspiring 10:8 strikeout-to-walk ratio. … With the game out of hand, the Missions once again turned to their blowout bullpen saver, Wyatt Hoffman, who needed only five pitches to retire the side in order. The 26-year-old, who throws in the mid-50s on the mound, has not walked a batter over 3.1 innings while allowing only one hit. At the plate, Hoffman went 0-for-1 but did walk and stole his fifth bag of the season. Tonight’s game raised his OPS to .385.

Key Statistics: SS Leo De Vries 2-for-4, 3B, R, BB, E (16); LF Jack Costello 2-for-4, RBI; C Oswaldo Linares 2-for-4, R; RHP Sam Whiting 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, K; RHP Sean Barnett 0.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, BB; RHP Luis Germán 2 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 K
Prospect Watch: Between May 27 and June 24, Leo De Vries had three extra-base hits. Over his last seven games, the 18-year-old now has four. De Vries hit a first-inning triple, his first three-bagger since late April and finished with back-to-back multi-hit games for just the second time since April. After a stellar start to the year, the widely-regarded prospect struggled badly for a six week stretch, but he appears to have turned the corner again. Over his last 10 games, De Vries is hitting .306/.468/.389 with 11 walks against 12 strikeouts. … Jack Costello knocked in De Vries with a first-inning single to collect the club’s only hit with runners in scoring position all night. It was his second two-hit game over his past three games. … Sean Barnett‘s struggles on the mound continued as Lansing jumped him for five hits and a walk as he failed to get through a full inning of work for the fourth straight outing. While he has shown a promising pitch mix in bullpen sessions, he’s had trouble dialing in command. The result has been 11 walks and two hit batters in just seven innings. When he has been in the zone, he’s generally caught too much of it, leading to a .421 opponent’s average. The 22-year-old was drafted as a two-way player despite having thrown just 17.2 innings in three years of college.

Kash Mayfield has been very hard to hit since returning to the rotation last month. (Photo: Robert Escalante)
Storm 3, Inland Empire 66ers 2
Key Statistics: LHP Kash Mayfield 2 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K; RHP Kleiber Olmedo 3 IP, H, BB, 5 K; CF Chase Valentine 1-for-2, R, RBI, 2 BB; 2B Yendry Rojas 1-for-2, 2B, RBI, 2 BB; 3B Zach Evans 1-for-4, 2B, R
Prospect Watch: Both clubs struggled with a very tight strike zone from home plate umpire Patrick Morris, but the Storm took better advantage drawing 12 walks to eke out a win. Yendry Rojas was one of three players to walk twice. However, it was his eighth-inning RBI double that ended up being the difference in the game. The infielder has struggled frequently since signing for a seven-figure international free agent deal in 2022, but the 20-year-old had a particularly rough June, hitting just .087/.143/.109 with only one extra-base hit and three walks in 16 games. In two games this month, he already has two doubles and three walks. … With the draft looming in less than two weeks, last year’s top pick Kash Mayfield felt the brunt of the tight strike zone, walking three in two innings. He was clearly frustrated as several pitches appeared to be strikes to everyone except the home plate umpire. Still, while the 20-year-old needed 55 pitches to do it, he managed not to give up a run by leaving the bases loaded in each inning. He did strike out three as his changeup continued to torment Cal League hitters. Since leaving a start with shoulder discomfort in Mid-May and skipping his turn in the rotation twice, Mayfield has been highly effective while working on short pitch counts. He has allowed only one earned run over his 10.2 innings in six starts, striking out 25 for a stellar 19.3 K/9 rate. Opponents are hitting just .184 against the 20-year-old on the year. … Lamar King Jr. went 0-for-4 to snap his 11-game hit streak. Despite the streak coming to an end, King is still hitting .425/.500/.625 over his last 12 games.
