Prospect Watch: With the game tied at five, Clay Dungan, 29, led off the eighth inning with his ninth home run to right field to put the home team up by one. The blast capped a three-hit night for Dungan, who has been particularly hot in June, hitting .306/.404/.612 with 12 extra-base hits in 23 games. The left-handed hitting Dungan, who the Padres selected in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft in 2023, has seen time at second, third, shortstop, and center field. … Yonathan Perlaza also had a big day, hitting his league-leading 27th double and falling a triple short of the cycle.  The 26-year-old has an .834 OPS on the season and leads the team with 82 hits. He’s well off the pace from his 2023 campaign for the Cubs’ International League affiliate in 2023. … Kyle Hart turned in a quality start, allowing two runs over six innings while striking out six. The lefty showed off his five-pitch mix, landing 50 of his 93 pitches in the strike zone. He handed a 5-2 lead over to rehabber Logan Gillaspie, who had a rough outing. The righty gave up two home runs and a triple to the first three batters he faced, giving up the lead. He came back to strike out the side around one more single to get out of the inning. Gillaspie hit the leadoff man in the eighth but got two more outs before giving way at 34 pitches. His fastball and sinker both sat at 95 mph on the night. … Ron Marinaccio came on and picked up his fourth save of the year with a scoreless ninth. The waiver wire claim, who has been on the 40-man roster all season without getting a call-up, sports a 4.70 ERA. …  Luis Campusano made his fourth start at first base of the season and was 0-for-4 on the night. … The Chihuahuas will go for their fifth win against Sugar Land on Sunday.

Key Statistics: SS Ripken Reyes 1-for-4, RBI; 1B Romeo Sanabria 1-for-4, RBI; LF Kai Murphy 1-for-3, BB; DH Jake Snider 2-for-2, HBP; RHP Jared Kollar 4 IP, 2 H, BB, 4 K; RHP J.B. Wendelken (W, 1-0) 2 IP, 2 K; RHP Andrew Moore 2 IP, 2 BB, 4 K; LHP Ryan Och (S, 2) 1 IP, K

Jared Kollar had his best outing since returning to San Antonio. (Photo: San Antonio Missions)

Prospect Watch:  The Missions won on the road by playing small ball while the pitching staff held the RockHounds scoreless. They scored all the runs they would need in the fifth inning on a Ripken Reyes suicide squeeze play that went for a single to bring Kai Murphy home, before Romeo Sanabria plated an insurance run with an RBI single. … Jared Kollar had his best outing since being sent down from El Paso at the end of May, holding Midland to only a pair of singles in four innings of work. It was a nice bounceback by the 2022 undrafted free agent, who gave up eight earned runs in an inning and two-thirds on Wednesday. Kollar came into the year with a 3.64 ERA in his first three seasons, but has struggled mightily at two levels this year. … Andrew Moore, who came over in the Connor Joe trade with the Cincinnati Reds, had a nice outing holding the home team scoreless in two innings. Moore has dropped his ERA 4.15 in 8.2 innings to open the year in the Reds organization, to a 3.09 mark in 11.2 innings with San Antonio. While he has punched out nearly 30% of Texas League opponents and is holding them to a .167 average, his 23.2% walk rate isn’t sustainable. San Antonio’s pitching staff struck out 11 RockHounds, extending their Texas League leading total to 759. The Binghamton Rumble Ponies in the Eastern League are the only Double-A staff with more. … San Antonio will go for the series win on Sunday.

Prospect Watch:  In a great pitcher’s duel at Parkview Field, the TinCaps won on a walk-off bases-loaded 106 mph single Leo De Vries pounded off the right field wall on the first pitch he saw. De Vries finished the night with two of Fort Wayne’s five hits and a walk. After an ice cold start to the month, the 18-year-old has had four multi-hit games in his last seven games, bringing his wRC+ back up to 109 on the year. … USD Torero Jack Costello continued his best month of the year with two hits of his own, raising his OPS for June to .779. He has been particularly effective against left-handed pitching this season, posting a slash line of .343/.387/.557. One of his hits Saturday came against the Loons’ left-handed starter Maddux Bruns. … Fort Wayne got another strong start from Eric Yost and stellar pitching performances from Fernando Sanchez and Garrett Hawkins in relief.  Yost, 22, gave up a run on a pair of doubles in the first inning, but allowed no further damage over 5.2 innings. The unheralded righty has gone at least five innings in each of his last nine starts and, at 68.2 innings on the year, has thrown nearly 40% more innings than any other TinCap. His 2.36 ERA is second among qualified starters in the Midwest League. After allowing seven runs in his first 10 innings of the year, Hawkins has put together a stretch of 22 scoreless innings. The 25-year-old, who has transitioned to a late-inning relief role coming off Tommy John surgery, has struck out 28 against just five walks during his stretch of dominance, holding opponents to an average of just .091. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound right-hander should be in line to move up to Double-A shortly. … Kyle Nevin, son of former Padres great Phil Nevin, went 1-for-3 with a walk for Great Lakes Saturday.  The 23-year-old is hitting .340 with a 1.084 OPS in his first 13 games after spending the first two months of the season on the IL. The 11th-round pick in 2022 struggled to a .664 OPS in his first pass at the Midwest League last year. … Fort Wayne will go for the series win on Sunday.

Storm 11, Modesto Nuts 5

Key Statistics: DH Kavares Tears 1-for-5, HR (9), RBI; C Lamar King, Jr. 3-for-5, 2B, 1B Victor Figueroa 2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI; 3B Zach Evans 2-for-5, HR (3), 3 RBI; LF Kaden Hollow 2-for-3, HR (2), 2 RBI; 2B Yimy Tovar 2-for-4, 2B, RBI;  RHP Abraham Parra 4 IP, 8  H, 5 R (3 ER), BB, 7 K; RHP Tucker Musgrove (W, 2-0) 1.2 IP, H, 2 K; RHP Adam Conrad 2.1 IP, BB; RHP Tanner Smith 1 IP, H, K

Prospect Watch: In a game that went back-and-forth early, the Storm put up a five-spot in the fifth inning to pull away and claim the win at the Diamond. Zach Evans opened the scoring with a three-run homer. The Padres’ ninth-round pick out of Division II Lenoir-Rhyne University last year leads the team with 79 hits. Despite a 6-foot-4 frame, the Buffalo native has only 17 extra-base hits for a .372 slugging percentage on the year. … Kavares Tears, hitting out of the leadoff spot for the fourth time this year, put the Storm ahead to stay a solo home run to center field. The 22-year-old has dealt with both hamstring and shoulder issues that have limited him to only one game in the outfield this year. While he’s connected on four homers in June, he has struggled to a line of just .141/.223/.293 in 103 trips to the plate this month. … Victor Figueroa had two more doubles and drew a walk, moving his Cal League OPS back up to .930. The big first baseman’s average has fallen off this month, but he’s still slugging .567 with more walks than strikeouts in June. After opening the year in the ACL, Figueroa is still well short of enough plate appearances to appear on Cal League leader boards, but his .957 slugging percentage is fourth among batters with at least 100 plate appearances on the circuit this year. In 30 games with the Storm 18 of his 27 hits have gone for extra bases, including seven home runs. … Lamar King Jr., added three more hits to push his OPS for the month to 1.109.  After only playing in 25 games in his first two years in the system, and 62 last season, the 21-year-old is finally getting an opportunity to show what he can do when healthy. He’s caught 36 games this year, had 20 starts at first base, and three as a designated hitter. … Although he had an error in left field, converted catcher Kaden Hollow also had a home run and reached base three times. An undrafted free agent in 2022, the 24-year-old has fought injuries in his first three years in the organization. After a brief stint with Fort Wayne at the end of last month, Hollow has given the Storm lineup consistent at-bats. … Righty Tucker Musgrove returned to action for the first time in nearly a month and tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. The 23-year-old, initially drafted as a two-way player, underwent Tommy John surgery just after signing in 2023 and moved to pitching exclusively. He got shelled for five runs without recording an out in one appearance, but has otherwise looked strong in his limited action this year. … Adam Conrad, 22, bounced back from his first rough outing of the year to throw 2.1 scoreless innings. After allowing only three earned runs in his first 31 innings of the year, he was tagged for five while recording just one out against Modest on Wednesday. While he has struggled with command this year, the righty from North Carolina issued only one free pass as he set down eight of the nine batters he faced. Opponents are hitting just .171 against him this year.
