Prospect Watch: Just 17 days ago, Bradgley Rodriguez walked off the mound shaking his arm. While he has working through a throwing progression, it was unclear what that might yield. Wednesday, he returned and threw a perfect inning. He topped out at 99.6 mph, comfortably sitting at 98. The 21-year-old threw 1.2 scoreless innings with the Padres less than a month ago. … He wasn’t the only hard-throwing reliever with a strong outing, as  Francis Peña struck out two over a scoreless inning. The sinker/slider pitcher was up to 97 mph on his fastball. After a tough stretch in May, the 24-year-old has not allowed a run over 10 innings in his last seven appearances and batters are hitting .100 against him during this stretch. Peña landed 10 of his 19 pitches in the zone and recorded 13 strikes. … For the second game in a row, Luis Campusano hit a late-inning home run. In seven games since his latest demotion, Campusano has four doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBI. On the season, the 26-year-old has a .629 slugging percentage and 1.062 OPS in the PCL, but has gone 0-for-18 in scattered play with the big leagues. … Every member of the El Paso starting nine recorded at least one hit. The 2-7 hitters in the lineup went a combined 13-for-24.  Mason McCoy hit his seventh home run in 41 games. While his previous high OPS for a season was .805, the 30-year-old is up to a .980 mark this year, with more home runs in 41 games than he hit in 108 games for El Paso last year. A finger injury cost him an extended look with the big league club when Xander Bogaerts went down, but with his defensive skillset, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him back in San Diego at some point this summer. … Forrest Wall hit his third home run of the season and had a team high four RBI.  The 29-year-old is already three RBI away from passing his season total from last year (78 games).

Midland Rockhounds 18, Missions 4

Key Stats: C Brandon Valenzuela 1-for-4; 1B Romeo Sanabria 1-for-4, HR (6), RBI; RF Moisés Gómez 1-for-4 HR (5), 2 RBI; RHP Jared Kollar 1.2 IP, 6 H, 8 ER, 2 BB; LHP Ryan Och 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB; RHP Wyatt Hoffman 2 IP, H, ER

Prospect Watch: The Missions went down 2-0 in the first, but quickly came back to tie when Romeo Sanabria hit his sixth home run in the second inning. It was his first home run in a span of 31 games since May 20. At the time of his last homer, Sanabria was hitting .325 with an .883 OPS. Since then, he’s 27-for-114 with only five extra-base hits, dropping his OPS on the year to .746. He’ll look to get back on track as the second half gets going. … After the offense tied the game, the pitching staff gave up 15 runs over the next five innings. It got to the point that the highlight of the game was Wyatt Hoffman tossing the final two innings of the game. The 26-year-old utility player retired the side in order in the seventh, tossing in his offerings below 50 mph. He did hit a batter and give up a 2-out RBI double in the eighth. Over eight mop-up innings in his career, Hoffman has not walked a batter and has allowed eight hits over eight innings.  As a hitter, he has a career .565 OPS.

Leo De Vries could become a force within the Padres organization. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)

Key Statistics: SS Leo De Vries 3-for-4, 2 2B, CS (5); 1B Jack Costello 1-for-2, HBP; RHP Harry Gustin IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB; TWP Sean Barnett 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, K

Prospect Watch: With three more hits in this one, Leo De Vries has reached base 13 times in his last four games to break out of a month-long slump and a brutal 1-for-27 streak. More importantly, De Vries had a pair of doubles for his first extra-base hits since June 10. Even as he has struggled, the talented shortstop has matching 19.5% walk and strikeout rates this month, giving reason for optimism that the 18-year-old will turn things around again in the coming weeks.… Jack Costello reached base safely for the ninth straight game. The former USD Torrero has been heating up with the weather. After posting an OPS of .585 in April and .616 in May, has an .848 mark so far this month. … There was no other good news to report for the TinCaps, who had only two other hits and burned through six pitchers in a scheduled bullpen day. Harry Gustin, who entered the game with a 2.18 ERA out of the pen, received a spot start. Unfortunately, three pitches into the second inning, he looked visibly shaken and had to be removed from the game. … This one ended with backup catcher Victor Duarte on the mound for Fort Wayne. The 24-year-old wore four runs as he kept the pitching staff from having to go deeper in this one.

Modesto Nuts 11, Storm 6

Kash Mayfield couldn’t get through the first inning. (Photo: Robert Escalante)

Key Statistics: LHP Kash Mayfield 0.2 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, K; SS Cobb Hightower 1-for-4, R, BB; 1B Lamar King Jr 1-for-4, R; BY Choi 1-for-3, R, RBI, BB; LF Kaden Hollow 1-for-3, R, RBI, BB; CF Ryan Wilson 1-for-4, 2 RBI; C Carlos Rodriguez 1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI

Prospect Watch: After striking out 21 of 28 batters he faced over his last four outings, Kash Mayfield just didn’t have his stuff Wednesday night. The lefty walked two of the first three he faced then was charged with a pair of hits as a grounder got through the left side of the infield and a flare landed between defenders in short right field after an 11-pitch at-bat. He did ultimately record a strikeout, but was at 34 pitches. The organization has capped pitchers at 35 in an inning to reduce injury risk, so that strikeout ended his night. Despite an 0-4 record, Mayfield has 46 strikeouts in 29 innings with opponents hitting .181 against him. … Another 20-year-old lefty, Braian Salazar, struck out three over two scoreless innings in a dominant outing. Over his career, Salazar has relied on a nasty sweeper and low-90s fastball to record 115 strikeouts in 86.1 innings, but he is walking nearly a batter an inning this year. Now two years removed from Tommy John surgery, the Venezuelan shows good raw talent if he can harness it more consistently. … Down 10-0 in the middle of the sixth, the Storm took advantage of four walks and got a bases-loaded single from Ryan Wilson, to make it 10-4.  The 23-year-old out of Davidson collected his first RBI in three weeks.  Wilson has reached base safely in 14 of his last 15 starts. … Backup catcher Colton Vincent threw the last inning for the Storm, giving up one run on a pair of hits. The 25-year-old out of Florida State has been called on to make two other appearances this year.
