Prospect Watch: Left-hander Kyle Hart showed off a balanced five-pitch mix as he worked five innings and allowed four runs on six hits, three walks, and struck out four. Hart was snake-bitten by the long ball, allowing a pair of loud solo home runs, with both registering exit velocities north of 100 mph. Hart’s most effective pitch of the night was his sweeper, which he threw 18 times. It averaged -11.0 inches of horizontal break and 3.9 inches of induced vertical break at 2536 rpm, getting a 50% chase and a 50% whiff rate. Albuquerque hit Hart’s changeup particularly hard, with an average exit velocity of 88.8 mph on four balls in play. … Bradgley Rodriguez made his El Paso debut, allowing one run on two hits in an inning of work. Pitching at 3740 feet above sea level, not even Rodriguez’s powerful arsenal was immune to the effects of the PCL. Rodriguez’s fastball sat at 97.3 mph with 14.1 inches of induced vertical break, 2.5 inches less ride than it had during his MLB debut on May 31. Rodriguez’s changeup, which averaged 87.7 mph, generated his lone whiff of the night. … Tim Locastro packed a punch out of the nine hole, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while stealing his eighth bag of the season. Locastro’s .372 wOBA is in the 72nd percentile among Triple-A hitters this season. However, his 83.3 average exit velocity and 20% hard-hit rate rank in the just the fifth and first percentile, respectively. Locastro, 32, made his fourth start of the year at first base. He’s also seen time at both outfield corners. … Bryce Johnson posted a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 in the loss. His OPS sits at .853 since returning to El Paso… While Tirso Ornelas didn’t record a hit, he reached twice with a pair of walks. Over his last nine games, Ornelas owns a 1.306 OPS and a .419 batting average. 

Missions 4, Midland RockHounds 2

Prospect Watch: Behind a combined nine innings of two-run ball from their pitching staff, the Mission locked up a 4-2 win over the Midland Rockhounds. Luis Patiño delivered another strong start for the Missions, allowing one unearned run on four hits, while striking out three across four innings. The right-hander has looked sharp in his stops in Low-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio as he continues ramping up after Tommy John surgery last March. He has allowed just two earned runs over 17 innings. On Thursday, the fastball sat 94-96 with good ride. In total, he generated seven whiffs and a 21.8% whiff rate from Midland hitters. Eduarniel Núñez was first out of the bullpen following Patiño, and the right-hander was once again dominant as he struck out two in a perfect inning of work. Núñez sat 97-98 for the night while the slider hovered at 88-89 with excellent depth. Overall, his arsenal generated five total whiffs on eight swings. Over his last seven outings, the 25-year-old minor league free agent has not allowed a run. Among pitchers with a minimum of 20 IP, Nunez’s 42% strikeout rate ranks second in the Texas League. … Piggybacking for the second straight outing, Enmanuel Pinales worked four innings, allowing one run on five hits, two walks and punched out five.  Over his last three outings, the 24-year-old right-hander looks more like the pitcher we saw in Fort Wayne, posting a 3.14 ERA and 28.3% strikeout rate. … Romeo Sanabria went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk to keep his batting average at a league-leading .331 with a 145 wRC+ that ranks fifth among Texas League hitters. Brandon Valenzuela, in the lineup at designated hitter, went 1-for-4 for with a single. After a red-hot three weeks in May, Valenzuela has cooled off again. Over his last 13 games, he’s hitting .196 with an 89 wRC+. … Anthony Vilar provided the Missions biggest hit of the night, as the San Antonio catcher delivered a two-out, two-strike RBI double in the top of the sixth to give the Missions a 4-1 lead.

Prospect Watch: After jumping out to an early 4-0 advantage, the TinCaps allowed five unanswered runs to fall 5-4 to Beloit and settle back to .500 on the year. … Rosman Verdugo’s 2025 power surge persisted as the third baseman went 2-for-5 with a double and run batted in. Despite hitting just .239 with a 40.1% whiff rate, Verdugo ranks third in the Midwest League with .274 ISO and inside the top 20 in both OPS and slugging percentage. … Leo De Vries went 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored, though the Padres’ top prospect also punched out twice in the loss. While the at-bats are still competitive, De Vries has seen an increase in strikeouts recently. Dating back to May 10, De Vries has a 27.8% K rate. Even with the recent struggles, growing pains, and uptick in strikeouts over the last month, De Vries’ hit tool and plate discipline remain extremely advanced for an 18-year old at High-A. His 24.8% whiff rate, 24.7% chase rate and 79.8% in-zone contact rate are all well above-average marks for the High-A level. … Kai Roberts put together a 2-for-4 night at the plate out of the designated hitter slot, collecting a pair of singles and run scored. Roberts has struggled a bit early on since being assigned to Fort Wayne, but now has back-to-back multi-hit games. His 11.3% walk rate is laudable, but he has posted a a 35.8% strikeout rate while swinging and missing 38.5 percent of the time. … After a strong first inning, Jose Luis Reyes allowed four runs over the next two frames. The righty left the game with the trainer after giving up a two-out double in the fourth, though it wasn’t immediately clear what his injury was. The 22-year-old from Mexicali had Tommy John surgery in June, 2022. … Cole Paplham didn’t miss a beat in his first outing since his rehab assignment was transferred to Fort Wayne. The hard-throwing right-hander needed just ten pitches to complete his perfect inning of work as he punched out one. His fastball topped out at 98 while his sweeper displayed excellent depth and helped generate his lone strikeout of the night. Paplham is pitching with a Rip Hamilton-like protective face mask after being struck in the face by a 104 mph line drive during spring training. It was the second time in a year he took a batted ball to the face. … Garrett Hawkins also turned in an excellent outing, striking out both batters he faced after entering with one out in the eighth. Hawkins’s fastball sat 95-96 with plus vertical ride and topped out at 97 for the evening. The Canadian’s slider also showcased good tilt as he generated three whiffs on seven swings. Among Midwest league pitchers with at least ten innings pitched, Hawkins’s 37.2 strikeout rate ranks seventh.

Storm 11, Modesto Nuts 5

Prospect Watch: Behind yet another quality outing from Boston Bateman, the Storm rolled to an easy 11-5 victory over the Modesto Nuts. For the third consecutive outing, the Padres’ 2024 second round selection allowed just one run as the left-hander worked five innings walking one against five strikeouts. Bateman’s fastball and sinker sat 95-96 mph for most of the afternoon, with the four-seamer topping out at 97. The slider proved especially difficult for Modesto left-handers to barrel. For the afternoon, he generated 10 whiffs and a 27% whiff rate. Bateman threw 59% of his season-high 78 pitches for strikes. Over his last three starts, Bateman owns a 1.93 ERA and 26.3% K rate. … At the dish, Victor Figueroa continues to find barrels. The Storm first baseman went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Figueroa drove his second double to the opposite field. Through 13 games with Lake Elsinore, the 21-year old has displayed a rather impressive ability to drive the ball with power to the opposite field as 44% of his extra base hits have gone the other way. He owns a .967 OPS and 153 wRC+ since moving up to the Cal League. … Ryan Jackson collected his third multi-hit performance in his last six games, going 2-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The former USC Trojan is older for the High-A level, but his .904 OPS, and 21.3% walk rate are still impressive. … Zach Evans reached base four times in the win, going 1-for-2 with three walks and a run scored. It’s the third straight game for the 22-year-old to reach base at least three times. While the Buffalo native’s power has posted just a .091 ISO, the bat to ball skills have been solid. This season Evans is hitting .327 with a strong 84.5% contact rate in the zone. After making an awkward play on a ball in the bottom of the seventh, Evans was pinch hit for in the eighth. … B.Y. Choi also produced a multi-hit afternoon, going 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. … After avoiding strikeouts in four of his last five starts, Kavares Tears punched out three times as part of an 0-for-5 game, though he did draw a walk and score a run. The 22-year-old has a .779 OPS in 39 games.

The ACL Padres had the day off.
