Prospect Watch: El Paso scored a pair in the first inning, but Albuquerque scored the last three, pushing across the Manfred Man in the tenth inning to defeat the Chihuahuas. … The El Paso runs came off the bat of Trenton Brooks, who connected on his tenth homer of the season. Brooks, 29, has been one of the best hitters in the PCL this season, ranking sixth with a .957 OPS and tied with Luis Campusano for seventh for homers. It’s no secret that the Padres could use an additional bat on the big league roster. Brooks has played mostly first base this year but also has six games in left field. … Yonathan Perlaza had a pair of hits and stole his fifth base of the season. The returnee from the KBO got off to a hot start in April but scuffled during May, hitting just .189/.260/.305 with 35 strikeouts in 95 at-bats. He has hit at least 23 homers in each of the last three seasons, two in the Cubs’ system and last year while playing with Hanwha. … Lefty Wes Benjamin turned in another solid outing and pitched well enough to win. Benjamin worked into the sixth, allowing just one run on five hits. He tied a season-high with five strikeouts. Over his last three outings, the former Texas Ranger has allowed four earned runs in 15.2 innings, resulting in a 2.30 ERA.
Midland RockHounds 1, Missions 0
Key Statistics: Marcos Castañon 2-for-3; SS Francisco Acuña 1-for-4; RHP Henry Baez, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 7 K; RHP Stephen Jones (L, 2-1) 1.1 IP, 2 H, ER, K; RHP Andrew Moore IP, K

Prospect Watch: The Missions offense struggled Tuesday, managing just three hits in a loss to Midland. … Marcos Castañon had a pair of hits – both singles – in the loss and has hit in 14 of 16 games. The 26-year-old is having a fine season at the plate, ranking fourth in the league with a .311 batting average, and his .863 OPS ranks ninth. Despite Castañon’s success this season, he has the second-lowest walk rate in the league. He will need to be more selective to be an option at the next level. … Henry Baez turned in a solid start, working into the sixth inning without allowing a run. He walked three and struck out seven. Baez has been among the best performers in the Texas League this season. In 11 starts, his 2.19 ERA ranks second, while his 53.1 innings pitched, 54 strikeouts, 1.13 WHIP .208 opponents’ average all rank in the top eight of the league. Baez is already on the 40-man roster and serves as a potential big-league option should the organization need to continue to tap into its minor-league depth. … Stephen Jones allowed the game’s only run and took the loss – his first of the season. Jones, 27, has generally been a reliable reliever for the Missions in his first season in the Padres’ organization. Overall, he has a solid 1.74 ERA in 17 games for San Antonio. He signed as a minor league free agent last winter after five years in the Rockies organization.
TinCaps 4, Beloit Sky Carp 2 (6 innings)
Key Statistics: 3B Rosman Verdugo, 1-for-1, 2 R, 2 BB, HR (9), RBI; RF Braedon Karpathios, 2-for-3, R, 2B; LF Jack Costello, 2-for-3, R; DH Sean Barnett, 1-for-3, 3B, 3 RBI; RHP Ian Koenig (W, 2-3) 6 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps battled through rainy weather, including a half-hour delay, to win a shortened game in Beloit, Wisconsin. … Rosman Verdugo had a productive day at the plate, drawing two walks and connecting on his ninth homer of the season. The homer was Verdugo’s first since May 15, when he hit a pair at home against West Michigan. The homer also broke up an 0-for-17 stretch for the TinCaps infielder. Verdugo, 20, has been among the best power hitters in the Midwest League in 2025. His nine homers rank second in the circuit and he has a top-five Isolated Power rate, but it’s come at a cost. Verdugo also leads the league with 72 strikeouts, and his 17.2% swinging strike rate is the seventh-highest in the league. Verdugo has the power to stick at third, but he must make more consistent contact to take his development to the next level. … Braedon Karpathios had a pair of hits, including a double. Much like last year, Karpathios has been able to draw walks at a prodigious rate. He ranks fourth in the league with 35 walks, and overall, he’s contributed a solid .809 OPS. … Designated hitter Sean Barnett keyed the offense with his only hit of the night, a three-run triple. Barnett hasn’t played daily as he prepares to begin work as a two-way player, but he’s shown pop as he makes periodic starts at designated hitter. The former Wingate star has yet to step on a mound as a professional, but he’s produced a solid .777 OPS as a hitter. … Ian Koenig pitched a rain-shortened complete game to earn his second win of the season. For just the second time as a professional, Koenig completed six innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking one and striking out a pair. The 24-year-old has looked good at times this season, but inconsistent fastball command has led to big innings. Still, the young righty, signed as an undrafted free agent out of junior college in 2022, has shown enough promise to continue to get opportunities to start. Tuesday’s start lowered his ERA to 6.06.
Storm 4, Modesto Nuts 2
Key Statistics: 1B Lamar King Jr., 1-for-4, R, SB (6); 3B Zach Evans, 3-for-4, R, 2B, RBI; LF Kaden Hollow, 1-for-3, 2 R, BB; RHP Will Varmette (W, 3-2) 5.2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K; RHP Adam Conrad, 1.2 IP, 2 H, BB, 3 K; RHP Vicarte Domingo (S, 2) IP, H, K

Zach Evans continues to make frequent contact. (Photo: Robert Escalante)
Prospect Watch: The Storm traveled to Modesto and outlasted the Nuts to win the series opener. … Zach Evans had just one hit last week against Stockton, but he had a strong game at the plate as the Storm opened their road trip. The third baseman had a pair of singles and a double and drove in a run in the victory. Evans, 22, was the Padres’ ninth-rounder last year, out of Lenior-Rhyne, a Division II School. The 6-foot-4 Evans hasn’t flashed much power, but he’s shown a good hit tool while leading the Storm with a .316 average. … Will Varmette earned Cal League Pitcher of the Week honors for his effort against Stockton last week, and judging by Tuesday’s performance, he could be in the mix again. The 22-year-old worked 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just two hits. He walked two and struck out four. Over his last 11.2 innings, Varmette allowed three hits and no runs. A brutal run early in the year still has his season ERA at 4.80, but his 2.33 mark over the last seven appearances is encouraging. … Adam Conrad continued his excellent run with 1.2 more scoreless innings as he allowed two hits and a walk, striking out three. Conrad has not surrendered an earned run and has struck out 27 in 23.1 innings over his first 11 professional outings. Conrad signed last summer as an undrafted free agent, becoming the first Carolina University product to reach the professional ranks. … Righty Vicarte Domingo pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out a batter. The 22-year-old was the Padres’ 19th-rounder out of British Columbia last season. While the righty has struggled with command, issuing 20 walks in just 25.2 innings, the Storm reliever has struck out 41 batters. The 5-foot-10 righty is a Vancouver native.
ACL Guardians 18, ACL Padres 9 (11 innings)
Key Statistics: DH Kale Fountain, 1-for-1, 3B, 2 BB; PH-DH Alcides Hernandez, 2-for-3, 2 RBI; RF Jesmaylin Arias, 2-for-5, 2B; 1B Albert Fabian, 1-for-3, RBI; RHP Alejandro Lugo, 0.1 IP, H, 3 ER, BB, K; RHP Kannon Kemp, 4.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 K; RHP Tanner Smith, 1.2 IP, BB, 3 K; RHP Miguel Valdez, 2 IP, H, 2 BB, 3 K; RHP Miguel Davila (L, 0-3) 1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, K

Albert Fabian cuts an imposing figure in the box. (Photo: Adam Gaddy)
Prospect Watch: You have to love complex league baseball. The Guardians exploded for ten runs in the top of the eleventh inning to turn an extra-innings game into a blowout in Peoria. The Padres squad committed three errors, walked three and hit a batter in the final frame as the game took four hours and 24 minutes to complete. … Kale Fountain started at designated hitter and notched a triple and two walks before making way for a pinch-hitter as he continues to recover from a minor hamstring issue. The 19-year-old has yet to play defensively after Tommy John surgery last fall, but should get an opportunity at first base later this month. … Albert Fabian made his first appearance in a game in over a year and had a single in three plate appearances. Fabian suffered a gruesome leg injury last year in the outfield while playing with the TinCaps and is currently on a rehab assignment while remaining on the 60-day IL. … After Alejandro Lugo struggled in the first inning, Kannon Kemp took over and pitched 4.2 innings. The big righty allowed two runs on seven hits. He struck out a pair of batters. The 20-year-old has a 4.88 ERA in five appearances in the desert this year. He’s working his way back into form after a shoulder injury last year, hoping to show the fastball that earned him the second-highest bonus in the Padres’ 2023 draft class out of high school in Texas.
