Key Stats: LF Tirso Ornelas 2-for-4, 2 2B, BB; DH Yonathan Perlaza 2-for-4, 2B, BB; 3B Mike Brosseau 1-for-4, HR (5), 4 RBI, BB; CF Forrest Wall 2-for-4, HR (2); LHP Wes Benjamin 4 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 4 BB; RHP Bryan Hoeing IP, 4 H, 2 ER; RHP Ethan Routzahn (W, 3-1) 1.1 IP, H, 2 K; LHP Jason Blanchard 1.2 IP, 3 K, BB
Prospect Watch: The visitors from El Paso rode a five-run fifth inning fueled by a Mike Brosseau grand slam to a win Thursday. Brosseau, 31, who last homered two weeks ago in Las Vegas, is hitting .226/.300/.391 in his first season in the Padres organization. … Tirso Ornelas had a pair of doubles as he collected multiple extra-base hits for the third game in a row. The left-handed outfielder has had an up-and-down month, but overall has hit .309/.345/.481 in 87 trips to the plate. Ornelas, who is normally quite patient at the plate, drew just his fifth walk of the month in the game. … Bryan Hoeing labored through his second appearance since having his rehab assignment transferred to the Chihuahuas earlier this week. The righty put just 10 of his 19 pitches in the zone as he yielded two doubles and a pair of singles in his inning of work. Hoeing’s primary sinker sat 92-93 and he wasn’t able to get a single swing and miss with his splitter or slider. … Righty Ethan Routzahn struck out two of the five batters he faced while turning in 1.1 innings of scoreless work. The 27-year-old, who originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021, filled up the zone enough to get Sacramento batters to chase when he went off the plate, drawing five swings on 10 pitches that were not strikes.
Arkansas Travelers 6, Missions 4

Marcos Castañon has been making loud contact this month. (Photo: Vashaun Newman)
Key Stats: C Brandon Valenzuela 1-for-5, HR (6); 2B/3B Marcos Castañon 3-for-5, 2 2B; RF Joshua Mears 2-for-5, SB (5); RHP Sam Whiting 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 3 BB, WP, HBP; RHP Carter Loewen 1.2 IP, 4 K; RHP Eduarniel Núñez IP, 3 K
Prospect Watch: The Travelers got to Sam Whiting for four runs in the second inning and the Missions never got closer than two runs again in the game. Whiting, 24, had a strong showing last year as he pitched to a 3.75 ERA across three levels, but has struggled a bit in his second full season since the Padres drafted him out of UC Santa Barbara in the 16th round in 2023. The big righty made quick work of Arkansas in the first, but gave up an inning-opening homer and walk in the second. The Travelers, whose offense entered with a league-worst 33 home runs on the year, got a second round-tripper and a loud double in the inning as well. Whiting labored in the third, but avoided further damage in his 3.1 innings of work. On the year, he sports a 5.48 ERA as he comes back from a sports hernia at the end of last season. … Brandon Valenzuela connected on a two-run homer in the sixth inning to close the gap. For the switch-hitting catcher, the blast was his fifth from the left side and sixth overall on the year, though he’s been much more productive overall as a right-handed hitter. In total, he has an .821 OPS as he continues to deliver his strongest offensive campaign since low-A in 2021. … Marcos Castañon had a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit night. He’s already amassed 12 extra-base hits this month, fueling a .536 slugging percentage that is on track to be his best monthly total since reaching San Antonio in 2023.

Braedon Karpathios had another big night at the plate. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)
Key Stats: SS Brandon Butterworth 1-for-3, 3B, 2 BB, SB (7); RF Braedon Karpathios 3-for-4, 2B, BB; CF Jake Snider 1-for-3, BB, SB (4); RHP Jose Reyes 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 3 BB; LHP Fernando Sanchez 2 IP, H, ER, 3 K, BB; RHP Garrett Hawkins IP, 2 BB; RHP Tyson Neighbors IP, 2 H, ER, 2 K
Prospect Watch: Outfielder Braedon Karpathios led the TinCaps offense with a 3-for-4 night as the visitors claimed a victory over the Dodgers’ Midwest League affiliate. Karpathios, 21, had a double and drew a walk as he snapped a 2-for-20 stretch at the plate. The left-hander from Pennsylvania is hitting only .217 this month, but thanks to 18 walks and six extra-base hits, he sports an .814 OPS. Karpathios has cut his strikeout rate down to 25.6% for May. … Brandon Butterworth left Sunday’s game after a collision at home plate in the first inning. Any concern about lingering effects has been assuaged by his first two games back. The right-handed middle infielder reached base three times out of the leadoff spot to spark the offense. He collected his third triple in six games, a span in which he’s raised his OPS by 54 points. A 2024 selection out of North Carolina State, Butterworth has gotten regular action at shortstop on off days for Leo De Vries, and played second the other days. … Righty Garrett Hawkins was the only of four Storm pitchers to avoid being charged with an earned run in the contest. The big Canadian walked a pair in his inning, but a caught stealing helped him escape without damage. The 25-year-old, now 21 months off Tommy John surgery, has emerged as another intriguing late-inning relief option in the system. He hadn’t issued a walk in his previous 10.2 innings, a stretch during which he struck out 19 and allowed only four hits. Opponents are hitting just .145 and have punched out at a 37.5% clip.
Storm 13, Stockton Ports 7

Kavares Tears had plenty to celebrate on Thursday. (Photo: Robert Escalante)
Key Stats: DH Kavares Tears 3-for-5, 2 2B, HR (4); C Lamar King Jr. 3-for-4, 2 2B; SS Chase Valentine 2-for-5, 2 2B; CF Ryan Wilson 2-for-4, 2B; SS Ryan Jackson 1-for-3, 2B, BB; LHP Boston Bateman 5 IP, 4 H, ER, 6 K, 2 BB; RHP Adam Conrad 3 IP, 2 H, 2 K, 2 BB; LHP Braian Salazar IP, 5 H, 6 ER, K, 2 BB
Prospect Watch: The Storm offense pounded out nine doubles in the first five innings and cruised to a victory that was more lopsided than the final score – which included a six-run ninth inning for the Ports – indicated. Kavares Tears led the hit parade with two doubles and a bomb of a home run to right-center. The left-handed outfielder is now slugging .446 on the year as he continues to work back from hamstring issues that have kept him out of the field. While his 28.4% strikeout rate remains a concern, the 22-year-old has consistently loud exit velocities. … Lamar King Jr. had his first three-hit game since the season’s first week as he pounded a pair of doubles. He also drew a walk and struck out in the contest. The young backstop is only hitting .192 this month, but he’s now collected at least one hit in seven of his last nine games. He continues to post strong strikeout rates and hit the ball hard, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get on another roll at some point. … Utilityman Chase Valentine, who has already played for three different affiliates this year, joined the hit parade with two doubles of his own. The Colorado native last collected multiple extra-base hits in a game last August. … Boston Bateman was back on is regular full throwing schedule Tuesday and cruised through five innings against the Ports. The lefty, who was sick two weeks ago and worked a pair of abbreviated outings after that, allowed just one run on four hits as he struck out six. Last year’s second-round pick racked up 50 strikes in 77 pitches despite a pair of walks and a hit batter. In eight contests so far this year, the 6-foot-8 behemoth sports a 4.08 ERA, though his strong 26.5% strikeout rate and 9.5% walk rate translate into a slightly rosier 3.65 FIP. … Righty Adam Conrad continued his impressive run to begin his pro career, tossing three more innings of scoreless baseball. The 22-year-old righty, who became the first player out of Carolina University to reach professional baseball when he signed as an undrafted free agent last year, has yet to allow an earned run over 21.2 innings of relief. Opponents are hitting just .110 against him, which has helped him thrive despite allowing 15 walks. He has now worked at least three innings in four of his 10 outings.

Prospect Watch: The Brewers got out to an early lead when Jeferson Quero, a top 50 prospect who is rehabbing before he looks to rejoin Triple-A Nashville, hit a homer off Humberto Cruz and then they piled on with a seven-run inning to run away with this one. Cruz, who was held back two extra days between starts because of a flu bug that caused him to drop a few pounds, struggled more than he has in his other outings. The righty walked a pair in addition to the homer as he worked through two innings. He should stretch out to approximately 50 pitches in his next start. He’s still likely to spend much of June in the desert before potentially being ready to join Lake Elsinore. … Righty Elvis Reyes came on with the bases loaded in the seventh, but escaped when he got Quero to ground out softly. The 22-year-old righty, who signed last January out of the Dominican Republic, then worked a clean eighty inning. He has struggled with command in his early career, walking 38 in 42 innings, but he’s taking advantage of the opportunity presented by being in a pitching-thin system. … Left-handed outfielder Jesmaylin Arias had one of two Padres triples on the night, his second extra-base hit of the year. The 18-year-old has had a rough stateside debut, batting just .155 with a .487 OPS and 30.7% strikeout rate.
