1. Tacoma Rainiers 7, Chihuahuas 4

Key Statistics: SS Mason McCoy 1-for-4, 2 RBI; RF Yonathan Perlaza 1-for-2, R, 2 BB; CF Bryce Johnson 1-for-1, 3B; LHP Omar Cruz 4 IP, H, 2 BB, 3 K; RHP David Morgan (L, 0-2) 0.2 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, K

Prospect Watch: El Paso jumped out to a 4-0 lead early and carried it into the eighth inning before Tacoma struck for seven runs to earn the comeback victory. … The carnage all came against David Morgan who took his second loss of the season. Morgan began the inning by allowing a double, a single, and a three-run homer that pulled Tacoma within one. Morgan stayed in the game and allowed three consecutive singles with the exclamation point coming as a grand slam from Jack Lopez. Morgan’s fastball sat in the high 90s and touched 100, but Tacoma batters didn’t swing and miss at it on the night and hit three balls over 95 mph. The horrid outing raised Morgan’s ERA to 15.43 in his first crack at PCL baseball. … Morgan’s outing wasted a solid outing for Omar Cruz, who looked sharp early. The former big leaguer tossed four innings, allowing just one hit and a pair of walks, striking out three. The 26-year-old has done a great job of limiting quality contact; PCL batters are hitting just .149 against him. However, he’s walked 17 batters in 19.2 innings. As Cruz continues to work multiple innings, he could get another crack at the big league bullpen in the long man role. … Bryce Johnson tripled in the first inning, but the relay throw from right field caught him flush in the face as he dove into the bag. He left the game, walking off under his own power. We’ll hope the move was precautionary. … Mason McCoy began a rehab assignment, going 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. McCoy suffered a pinky injury while playing in the big leagues a few weeks ago. Once his rehab is complete, he could be optioned to El Paso as an infield depth option.

Roster Move: Miguel Cienfuegos was activated by the Chihuahuas from the development list.

Missions 5, Wichita Wind Surge 4

Key Statistics: 1B Romeo Sanabria 4-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR (5), RBI; DH Marcos Castañon 2-for-3, R, HR (5), 3 RBI; CF Nerwilian Cedeño 2-for-4, 2B, RBI; RHP Matt Waldron 2 IP, 3 H, ER, 2 BB, 2 K; RHP Bryan Hoeing IP, K; RHP Victor Lizarraga 3 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, K; RHP Bradgley Rodriguez (W, 3-0) IP, H, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The Missions scored a pair in the bottom of the ninth to walk off Wichita at the Wolff. … The walk-off hit came from Nerwilian Cedeño who doubled to cap off a multi-hit Double-A debut for the 23-year-old, who was promoted before Tuesday’s game. Cedeño posted a .273/.313/.347 slash-line for the TinCaps in 32 games, offensive production about 17% below the league average in the Midwest League. The new Missions center fielder had a solid K-rate of 16.8% but his lack of power (.074 ISO) and a paltry 5% walk-rate have minimized the impact of the consistent contact he has made. … Romeo Sanabria continues to make his case as a legitimate prospect who could help the Padres sooner rather than later. The big first baseman had four hits, missing the triple for a cycle. He also connected on his fifth homer for San Antonio in the victory. Sanabria leads the Missions with an .883 OPS that ranks eighth in the Texas League. … A pair of rehabbing arms appeared Tuesday for the Missions. Matt Waldron made his first rehab appearance for the Missions and tossed two innings. He allowed a run on three hits, walking two and striking out two. The knuckleballer strained his oblique during spring training. Once Waldron stretches out, he should give the Padres another starting arm who has experience pitching at the big league level. … Bryan Hoeing threw a scoreless inning, striking out one before departing. It was Hoeing’s third rehab appearance. He threw a third of an inning on May 10 and waited a week before appearing in another game. The next hurdle for Hoeing to clear will be working multiple innings, as he works toward reclaiming his place in the Padres’ bullpen.

Roster Move: To accommodate Cedeño’s arrival, fan favorite utility man Wyatt Hoffman will hit the development list.

Cedar Rapids Kernels 5, TinCaps 1 (5 innings)

Key Statistics: DH Sean Barnett, 1-for-2, BB; 3B Rosman Verdugo 1-for-3; CF Kai Roberts 0-for-0, 2 BB, SAC;  RHP Ian Koenig (L, 1-2) 3.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K; LHP Bodi Rascon IP, 2 BB

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps managed just three hits in a game that was reduced to five innings thanks to rain in the Fort Wayne area, perhaps foreshadowing the imminent arrival of our fearless leader, John Conniff. … Designated hitter Sean Barnett had a single and a walk in three plate appearances. The 21-year-old has worked exclusively at DH this year, after appearing in the outfield for the Storm last year. Barnett has yet to take the mound, but the plan is to get him into regular work at some point in June. The former Wingate University star hasn’t flashed his power in the Midwest League yet, but he has a solid .775 OPS in 11 games. … Center fielder Kai Roberts, who was sidelined by a hamstring injury for the first seven weeks of the season, made his TinCaps debut though he did not have an official at-bat. Roberts, 24, walked twice and was credited with a sacrifice bunt. The former University of Utah star made his pro debut last season in Lake Elsinore, where he delivered an .884 OPS in 24 games. … Righty Ian Koenig made the start and took the loss. The 24-year-old righty allowed five runs on four hits over 3.1 innings. He walked three and struck out three. In seven starts, Koenig has a 6.57 ERA.

Roster Moves: Roberts had been on the Lake Elsinore injured list, so he was technically transferred to Fort Wayne as he was activated. Left-handed first baseman/outfielder Kaden Hollow was also promoted to High-A. TinCaps outfielder Jake Snider will hit the development list to make way for Hollow.

Visalia Rawhide 9, Storm 4

Key Statistics: 2B Ryan Jackson 2-for-4, R, RBI; 1B Victor Figueroa 2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI; C Lamar King 2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI; LF Chase Valentine 2-for-3, 2 SB (1, 2); RHP Will Varmette (L, 1-2) 2.1 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, K; RHP Adam Conrad 1.2 IP, 2 H, BB, K; LHP Ruben Salinas IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB

Prospect Watch: The Storm opened up a 2-0 lead in the first but Visalia jumped all over Storm starter Will Varmette, scoring two in the second and four in the third inning to win the series opener. … First baseman Victor Figueroa made his Single-A debut and continued to rake. Figueroa lined an RBI single to center in his first at-bat and later added a double as part of a multi-hit night. In 11 games in the ACL, Figueroa produced like an MLB the Show player on amateur mode. He hit .605/.659/1.263, forcing a promotion to a higher level. The 21-year-old was drafted in the 18th round last year. … Lamar King Jr. slumped to 3-for-21 last week against Fresno but he found the hit column twice Tuesday. He singled, doubled and drove in a run. The 21-year-old has struggled in May, despite knocking his K-rate under 16%. Overall, King’s offensive production has been 13% below the league average this year. … Organizational swiss-army knife Chase Valentine started in left, singled twice and added a pair of stolen bases for good measure. The 23-year-old from Denver is with his third affiliate of the year, having started the year with the TinCaps. Between the three levels, Valentine has a .469 OPS. … After Varmette departed having allowed six earned runs in 2.1 innings, Adam Conrad tossed 1.2 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and a walk, striking out one. In eight games for the Storm, the 22-year-old has not allowed an earned run – a stretch that has reached 17 innings, although he did have one outing where he allowed three unearned runs. In those 17 innings, the former NAIA pitcher has allowed just six hits. … The last time Ruben Salinas appeared in a game for the Storm, he was an outfielder. Three years and one Tommy John surgery later, the Mexican-born Salinas is back as a full-time pitcher. In an inning of work, the 22-year-old allowed two runs on two hits. In four outings for the ACL Padres, Salinas allowed nine runs in seven innings.

ACL White Sox 4, ACL Padres 0 (7 innings)

Key Statistics: SS Yimy Tovar, 2-for-3; C Carlos Rodriguez, 2-for-3, SB (1); RHP Humberto Cruz, 2 IP, 3 K; RHP Cole Paplham, IP, BB, 2 K; RHP Erick Batista (L, 0-1) 2 IP, 3 H, R, BB, 2 K

Humberto Cruz. (Photo: Jerry Espinoza)

Prospect Watch: The ACL squad managed just six singles in a shutout loss. … Shortstop Yimy Tovar had two of those hits in three at-bats. The 19-year-old out of Venezuela has spent the last two seasons in the DSL before making his way stateside this spring. He’s hit well in the desert and sports a .333/.340/.451 slash-line to start the year. … Righty Humberto Cruz stretched out to two innings for the first time as a pro and looked sharp as ever. He didn’t allow a hit or a walk and struck out three batters. The 18-year-old should continue to build up in the desert and could get an opportunity to pitch in Lake Elsinore after the ACL season ends. … Righty Cole Paplham made his first rehab appearance, issuing a walk and striking out two. The hard-throwing righty out of the University of New Orleans sustained facial fractures after being hit with a line drive in a spring training game back in February.
