Prospect Watch: Although they didn’t have the same margin of victory as the big club’s 21-0 shellacking of the Rockies, El Paso was rolling for most of the game, building an 14-4 lead after six innings. A few late-inning runs made it a little closer than it should be, but they took their fourth win in five games against the Houston Astros’ top affiliate. … After having a walk-off single on Friday, Oscar González delivered a pair of doubles for his fifth multi-hit game in the nine Triple-A contests he has played. The 27-year-old had only one extra-base hit in his 61 plate appearances for the Padres, but has seven in 44 trips to the plate for El Paso, good for a stellar .659 slugging percentage. He put up a .484 mark in the much more hitting neutral environment of Scranton-Wilkes Barre in the Yankees’ system last year. … It’s been a tough year for Eguy Rosario, but he had his first double of the year and drew two walks as he reached base four times Saturday. In April, he had an OPS of.388. After bouncing around defensively to open the season, he has been locked in at shortstop over the last week… Jared Kollar claimed the win and now leads the staff with 34.1 innings pitched. The righty relied heavily on his cutter as he gave up just one run through the first five frames. He came back out of the sixth for the first time all year and gave up a leadoff homer. He bounced back to get a pair of outs, but surrendered a single and walked his final batter before giving way at 81 pitches. Both those runs came around to score after he left. He has struggled with his command this year, with 18 walks against 12 strikeouts. El Paso and the PCL in general are brutal places to pitch, especially for an extreme flyball pitcher like Kollar. The Chihuahuas have a .500 record despite Ryan Bergert‘s 5.16 ERA being the best among pitchers who’ve made at least five starts.

Missions 2, Frisco RoughRiders 1

Key Statistics: C Brandon Valenzuela 1-for-4; 2B 1B Romeo Sanabria 1-for-4, 2 RBI; CF Wyatt Hoffman 1-for-2; PH Kai Murphy 1-1, 3B;  RHP Henry Baez 5.1 IP 4 H, R, 4 BB, 6 K; LHP Jake Higginbotham 1.2 IP, H, K; RHP Eduarniel Nunez 0.2 Ip H, BB; RHP Stephen Jones 1.1 IP K

Prospect Watch:  Down 1-0, in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and the winning run on third base, Romeo Sanabria hammered the first pitch he saw over the right field wall and into the South Texas night to give the Missions a win at home. After having a big April with an .866 OPS, Sanabria had been just 2-for-18 since returning from an ankle injury last week before his homer. He’s maintaining a strikeout rate below 20% and still drawing walks. … San Antonio once again struggled to do anything offensively for much of the game, going to the sixth inning betting no-hit. Wyatt Hoffman kept them from making a run at a no-hitter in the series with a bloop single over the first baseman’s head with two outs in the sixth inning. … While Sanabria was the game’s hero, Kai Murphy played a key role by coming through with a triple to center pinch-hitting for Hoffman in the ninth inning. … Henry Baez had another strong outing, taking a two-hit shutout to the sixth inning. With one out and a runner on first, Baez appeared to have Frisco’s Keyber Rodriguez struck out, but the punchout pitch was called a ball. Luke Montz promptly got ejected for chirping about the call from the dugout. A pitch later, Rodriguez lined a single to left that plated the run and ended Baez’s night. As he walked off the mound, Baez said something to the home plate ump and was also ejected, so he’ll be facing a fine from the Texas League. Baez, who came into the game with a stellar 4.6% walk rate, was charged with four free passes in the contest against six strikeouts. Baez has posted a solid 3.66 ERA in 32 innings with a 35:9 strikeout-to-walk ratio as the Texas League has a .222 batting average against him.

Prospect Watch: When a team has as many errors as hits, it’s not going to be a great day. That held Saturday, as the TinCaps totaled three of each on the way to a shutout loss. Starter Isaiah Lowe continued his struggles on the mound, needing 84 pitches to get through three and two-thirds innings. The 22-year-old sports a rough 7.79 ERA with 15 strikeouts and 13 walks in 17.1 frames through six starts. He has only made it through five innings once. … Lefty Harry Gustin continues to pitch well tossing 2.1 frames to extend his scoreless streak to 6.1 innings this month. On the season, Midwest League batters are hitting .171 against the wiry left-hander in 21.2 innings. … Jose Sanabria had the only extra-base hit on a dismal day offensively for Fort Wayne. The 22-year-old utility man – who isn’t related to Romeo – is hitting .157 on the year. … Leo De Vries was hitless with three strikeouts as the 18-year-old’s batting average dipped to .293. At home, the phenom has a slash line of .400/.510/.700 in 12 games and 49 plate appearances at home, while he’s hitting just .220/.288/.407 in 65 plate appearances on the road. … Fort Wayne won three of the first four games of the series and the TinCaps will go for the series win on Sunday.

Prospect Watch: Lake Elsinore was down 7-0 on the road but put up seven unanswered runs to tie the game, and Yendry Rojas‘ sacrifice fly won it in the tenth. Braian Salazar and Will Varmette shut down San Jose in the bottom of the inning to give the Storm their third win in the series. … Kasen Wells, 21, reached base two more times and swiped his Cal League-best 22nd stolen bases in 23 attempt. He is sixth on the circuit with a .416 on-base percentage. Wells transferred from Texas A&M to junior college after his freshman year, showing an advanced bat and top-of-the-charts speed to entice the Padres to draft him in the 16th round last year. … Another 2024 Day 3 pick who continues to have a strong year is Ryan Jackson, who reached base three more times and now sports a .497 on-base percentage. The 17th-rounder from the University of Southern California has seen time at second, third, and shortstop, and his .929 OPS leads the club. … Kavares Tears, 22, led the offense with a pair of doubles and two walks, driving in three runs. After battling some injuries in spring training, Tears seems to be getting his legs under him. … Luis Patiño got through two innings of one-run work in his second rehab start, landing 22 of his 37 pitches for strikes. The 25-year-old, working back from Tommy John surgery last April, is expected to end up in El Paso once he has stretched out.

Key Statistics: SS Yimy Tovar 2-for-5, RBI; CF Kai Roberts 2-for-2, 3 R, RBI, BB; DH Kale Fountain 1-for-2, RBI, 2 BB; 1B Victor Figueroa 3-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB; 2B Ismael Javier 1-for-4, BB; RHP Bryan Hoeing 0.1 IP 3 H, 3 R, K, HR; RHP Jesus Castro (L,0-1) 1.1 IP 4 H, 4 R, HR

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres were up 11-5 going to the bottom of the eighth, but still found a way to lose as they once again ran out of available pitchers. Through six contests – two of which were only seven inning affairs – the ACL Padres have had to resort to position players on the mound three times. … Bryan Hoenig, making his first rehab appearance after starting the year on the big league club’s injured list, struck out the first batter he faced, then gave up two consecutive singles, followed by a home run, to end his day. The club will be much more concerned that he feels well Sunday than about the results. … Kai Roberts, one of the surprises of the Padres’ 2024 draft class, is getting close to going out to Fort Wayne. Playing in center field for the second time in his four games working back from a hamstring issue, he reached base in all three plate appearances before he exited as planned.  The 6-foot-5 left-handed hitter could add quite a bit to a struggling TinCaps’ offense. … Kale Fountain has been scorching the ball through his first five games at designated hitter, posting a 1.230 OPS.  The organization will probably keep the slugger, who is coming back from offseason Tommy John surgery, in the desert until he is ready to play in the field. … Victor Figueroa once again led the way with three hits, including a double and his second home run in as many days. Figueroa, drafted in the 18th round out of Florida SouthWestern State College, is a physical presence at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds. In 25 plate appearances, the 21-year-old has a .545/.600/.1.136 slash line with two doubles, two home runs, and a pair of triples. In 2022, the Padres took Romeo Sanabria in the 18th round from another Florida JC, Indian River State College.  Maybe lightning can strike twice?
