Prospect Watch: El Paso scored at least once in each of the first four innings before shutting down the Express late to win at home. … Two-time MLB All-Star Jake Cronenworth moved his rehab assignment to the Sun City after playing in the ACL over the weekend. He had an excellent day at the plate, socking a homer and drawing three walks while hitting second in the order. Cronenworth’s homer traveled 417 feet and left the bat at 102.5 mph. He should play one more game with the Chihuahuas in hopes of being activated by the Padres on Friday. … It took 23 games, but Eguy Rosario finally has his first extra-base hit of the season. The Chihuahuas shortstop connected on a historic homer as part of a multi-hit night; it was Rosario’s 49th homer as a Chihuahua, pushing him past Cody Decker as the franchise’s new home run king. The former big leaguer has struggled mightily this year, and his inconsistency against right-handed pitching has been especially glaring. In 54-at-bats against righties, Rosario is hitting a meager .130/.200/.185 with the homer. He is hitting .280 against lefties but his .613 OPS against southpaws isn’t encouraging either. In 22 games for the Padres last year, Rosario hit .306/.306/.722 with three homers off lefties. … Catcher Cody Roberts had a pair of singles and a double, making the most of a rare opportunity to start. The 28-year-old, who signed in February as a minor league free agent, has just 15 at-bats all season. … David Morgan made it to the big leagues last week but did not appear in a game before being sent back out to the minors. On Tuesday, the reliever made his Triple-A debut and looked sharp. Morgan tossed a scoreless inning, punching out two and topping out at 99.2 mph. The former Hope International outfielder is one of the better player development stories during the A.J. Preller era, as the Orange County product has established himself as a legitimate option for the big league bullpen. In 9.2 minor league innings, Morgan has punched out 21 batters.
Roster Moves: When All-Star outfielder Jackson Merrill was activated by the Padres, catcher Luis Campusano was sent back to Triple-A. In addition, lefties Jackson Wolf and Miguel Cienfuegos were promoted to El Paso from San Antonio. Reliever Andrew Bellatti was transferred to the development list.
Missions 9, Frisco RoughRiders 2
Key Statistics: CF Kai Murphy, 1-for-4, 3 R, BB, 2B, RBI, SB (4); LF Moisés Gómez, 3-for-5, R, 2B; 3B Devin Ortiz, 3-for-4, BB; RHP Braden Nett (W, 1-3) 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 7 K; LHP Jake Higginbotham, 1.2 IP, BB, K

Prospect Watch: The Missions scored three runs in the third to pull ahead for good, winning their series opener at home against the RoughRiders. … Moisés Gómez had three hits, including a double in the victory. The well-traveled veteran has swung the bat well for the Missions this year after ending the 2024 season playing with the independent Kansas City Monarchs of the American Association. The 26-year-old has an .868 OPS for the Missions and a 28% strikeout rate that would be his best since 2018. … Devin Ortiz had three singles and added a walk for good measure, raising his average to .333, tied for fourth in the Texas League. The 26-year-old has been a pleasant surprise for the Missions this season. The former two-way player at Virginia doesn’t possess a lot of power but he’s a capable defender at third and has shown enough versatility to bounce around the infield a bit since joining the Padres organization as an undrafted free agent. … Righty Braden Nett rebounded from back-to-back rough starts, earning his first win of the season. Nett worked into the sixth inning, allowing two runs (one earned), walked just one, and tied his season-high with seven strikeouts. In his two previous starts, Nett allowed 11 earned runs in 8.2 innings. Overall, the former undrafted free agent has a 5.04 ERA in six starts.
Roster Moves: The Missions rotation got a boost as Enmanuel Pinales was finally promoted to Double-A after a fantastic start to the season with the TinCaps. Sam Whiting was also activated from the IL and recalled from a one-outing rehab assignment in Lake Elsinore.
TinCaps 14, South Bend Cubs 9
Key Statistics: SS Leo De Vries, 1-for-5, 2 R, BB, 2 RBI; DH Sean Barnett, 2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, BB, 2 RBI; 2B Brandon Butterworth, 2-for-5, 2 R; CF Nerwilian Cedeño, 3-for-6, 2 R, 3 RBI; LF Jack Costello, 3-for-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI; RHP Ian Koenig (W, 1-0), 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 K; RHP Eiker Huizi, 2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 K

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps put this one away very early, scoring nine runs in the first inning to defeat the Cubs in an all-Indiana tilt. … The Padres moved up Sean Barnett to Fort Wayne after he dominated in the Cal League. Thus far, the potential two-way player hasn’t missed a beat against Midwest League pitching. Barnett had two more hits including a double in the victory. Over his last four starts at designated hitter, the former Wingate University star is 7-for-14 with three doubles and three walks. … Jack Costello showed signs of breaking out of an early-season slump with his second three-hit game of the season. Costello doubled, singled twice, and drove in three runs to raise his batting average to .216 – the highest it’s been since the second game of the season. … Nerwilian Cedeño had three singles and drove in three runs, breaking a 2-for-18 stretch for the switch-hitting utility man. Overall, Cedeño has a .643 OPS for the TinCaps in 2025. … Much like Nett, TinCaps righty Ian Koenig also bounced back, shaking off a pair of disastrous outings to earn his first win of the season. Koenig allowed a pair of earned runs in the first inning but then shut out the Cubs over his next four innings. He allowed four hits, walking one and striking out six. In his previous two outings, Koenig pitched just 2.2 innings combined, allowing seven earned runs. In his other outings, Koenig has allowed just two runs in 13.2 innings.
Storm 4, San Jose Giants 3
Key Statistics: CF Kasen Wells, 2-for-5, 2 RBI; 2B Ryan Jackson, 1-for-4, R, RBI; 3B Zach Evans, 3-for-4, 2B, RBI; LHP Kash Mayfield, 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, BB, 7 K; RHP Will Varmette (W, 1-0) 4 IP

Prospect Watch: The Storm scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to pull away in an 11 am start time game in San Jose. The Storm have won five of their last six games, improving to 12-16. … Center fielder Kasen Wells had a two-run double as part of a two-hit day in Northern California, extending his hitting streak to five games. During the streak, he boasts four multi-hit efforts to raise his average from .274 to .314. Wells also leads the California League in runs scored and stolen bases. … Third baseman Zach Evans had three hits, including an eighth-inning single that gave the Storm a lead they would not relinquish. The 22-year-old has been a steady presence hitting in the middle of the Storm order. Evans has just one homer but is hitting an excellent .339/.397/.450 with a league-leading 26 RBI. … Lefty Kash Mayfield had a solid outing but didn’t earn a decision. Mayfield pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out seven. It was the second consecutive outing in which Mayfield completed five innings. While Mayfield’s 5.12 ERA doesn’t look pretty, his underlying numbers paint a rosier picture. Cal League batters are hitting just .230 against last year’s first-rounder and he’s allowed just one homer. His 10.5% walk rate is a bit high, but with a slugging percentage of .324 against him, it’s not as if opponents are hitting Mayfield hard. His progression will be something to watch for the rest of May. … Reliever Will Varmette took over for Mayfield and threw four perfect innings to earn the win. Varmette pitched to contact and did not strike anyone out Tuesday. After allowing nine earned runs in his first three innings this season, the Alabama native has bounced back in a big way. Over his last two outings, the 22-year-old has thrown seven perfect innings, striking out three batters. Tuesday’s outing lowered his ERA to 8.10.
Roster Moves: Righty Miguel Mendez was transferred from Lake Elsinore to Fort Wayne, taking Enmanuel Pinales’ spot in the rotation. Righty Kleiber Olmedo and lefty Braian Salazar were promoted from the ACL to Lake Elsinore.
ACL Padres 3, ACL Rangers 0 (7 innings)
Key Statistics: LF Luis De Leon, 2-for-4, R, RBI; DH Kale Fountain, 2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI; 1B Cole Figueroa, 2-for-3, BB; RHP Humberto Cruz, IP, 2 K; RHP Abraham Parra (W, 1-0) 5 IP, 2 H, 4 K; RHP Miguel Valdez, IP, H

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres won their first game of the year in a scheduled seven-inning affair. … Righty Humberto Cruz made his season debut, tossing a scoreless inning. He struck out two before departing. The highly touted international signing will likely build up in the desert, perhaps getting a look in Lake Elsinore before the beginning of the summer. … Righty Abraham Parra took over for Cruz and pitched five scoreless innings to earn the victory. The 19-year-old allowed just two hits and struck out four. Parra struggled in the desert last year, pitching to a 9.59 ERA in 13 games (seven starts). … Designated hitter Kale Fountain had two hits, including a double in four at-bats. He also drove in a run. The 19-year-old has two multi-hit games already and is off to a 4-for-7 start in the desert. … Big first baseman Victor Figueroa stayed hot to start the year. Figueroa, 21, is 5-for-11 with a 1.265 OPS.
