Prospect Watch: El Paso bounced back to win their second straight over the Comets after dropping the first four games in the series. First baseman Trenton Brooks continues to impress in the early going with his home-town organization. The left-handed hitter from San Diego county put the Chihuahuas ahead with a two-run shot in the third, his third homer in eight games. The 29-year-old, who signed a minor league deal in the offseason after stints in the Guardians, Athletics and Giants systems, has topped 12 homers just once in his nine-year minor league career. … Luis Campusano stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. In the lineup as the designated hitter, Campusano scorched a 112 mph double to center and even his out was a 109 mph grounder. Through seven contests, he’s hitting .280/.400/.480 with five walks against four strikeouts. … Lefty Wes Benjamin made his second start of the series, giving up a pair of runs, one earned, over four frames. The Illinois native again fought his command a bit, getting just 37 strikes among 75 pitches. Oklahoma City did a good job making him locate, chasing at just 14% of his offerings outside the zone. Through his first three outings after spending three years in Korea, Benjamin has walked six while striking out seven in 8.2 innings.

Prospect Watch: After being held scoreless on four singles through the first eight innings, San Antonio rallied for three runs in the ninth, but came up short when Brandon Valenzuela, who homered Saturday, pinch hit and grounded into a game-ending double play. Starter Braden Nett avoided damage through the first two innings even as he allowed a pair of runners in each frame. In the third, after an error put the leadoff man on, he gave up back-to-back one-out hits and a sacrifice fly to fall behind 2-0. The hard-throwing righty wasn’t charged with an earned run, but yielded three hits, two walks, and a hit batter in his season debut. Nett possesses one of the system’s most dynamic arsenals, but has walked more than 17% of the hitters he’s faced since signing as an undrafted free agent in 2022. … Romeo Sanabria continued his hot start, adding two more hits to his early-season tally. The big first baseman went 5-for-13 in the first series. … Devin Ortiz was the only other Mission to register multiple hits on the day. The University of Virginia product homered in the season opener and went 5-9 with a walk over the weekend. … Ethan Salas came through with a two-run single in the ninth for his first hit of the season. Salas had Saturday off, but caught both Friday and Sunday. The organization will look to push his workload behind the plate more this year after he caught 67 games in 2024.

Prospect Watch: Lansing took advantage of an error in the third inning to plate four unearned runs and never looked back, keeping the TinCaps from an opening series sweep. Fort Wayne went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Sunday after a 2-for-9 showing Saturday. Jake Snider, playing center field and leading off, did his part for the offense, collecting a pair of hits including a two-run double, and a walk. The 26-year-old, who the Padres selected in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft last December, topped out in Hi-A for the Rockies organization, hitting just .237 but drawing enough walks for a solid .383 on-base percentage. The Iowa native had made only two starts in center in his professional career before getting the nod there twice in the opening series. … Eric Yost was saddled with the loss after he was charged with all four unearned runs. The Padres’ 17th-round pick in 2023 out of Northeastern, Yost allowed just one ball in the air in his three innings of work. In his 120 professional innings coming into the year, he’d posted a groundball rate well over 50%, while also filling the strike zone. Sunday, he walked three. … Josh Mallitz, 23, threw two scoreless innings in his season debut. Signed as an undrafted free agent last summer, the righty will be asked to give length out of the TinCaps bullpen this year.

Prospect Watch: The Storm completed a rough series up the road in Rancho Cucamonga, dropping their third straight contest as they managed just four hits. The Dodgers’ Quakes affiliate outscored them 30-11 over the weekend as Lake Elsinore pitching walked 32 and hit three more batters in 24 innings of work. Lefty Luis Gutierrez got the start Sunday and continued the theme of the series, walking six batters over his three innings of work. The 21-year-old from Venezuela often struggled with command in his first three seasons after signing as a key member of the 2019 international class, but locked into the zone more consistently last year as he made his full-season debut. … Righty Miguel Valdez, 21, was the only Storm pitcher to escape the outing without giving up a run. Signed as a 19-year-old out of the Dominican Republic in 2023, Valdez got to Elsinore for 10 games last season. Valdez issued two free passes of his own, but punched out the final two batters he faced. … Lamar King Jr. stayed hot, rifling three more hits – two with triple-digit exit velocities – in four trips to the plate. The 2022 fourth-rounder, playing at first base on Sunday, is 5-for-10 with three walks on the young season. … Sean Barnett, back in the DH slot after having Saturday off, had the club’s only other hit on the day. The big right-hander was shut down from his throwing program during spring training as he worked to go out as a two-way player, but he should be back throwing bullpens by the end of the month and could see action on the mound in June. In the meantime, he will be relied upon to provide power in the middle of the Storm lineup.
