Chihuahuas 7, Reno Aces 6

Key Stats: RHP Carl Edwards Jr. 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 10 K; RHP Sean Reynolds IP, K; LF  Brandon Lockridge 5-for-5, R, 2 RBI, SB (12), 2 2B; CF Bryce Johnson 2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI; 3B Eguy Rosario 1-for-5, HR (20), 2 RBI; DH Brett Sullivan 3-for-4, R, RBI, BB; RHP Francis Pena (W, 2-2) IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K; LHP Austin Davis (S, 10) IP, H, K

Prospect Watch: In his first game back in an El Paso uniform in over two months, Bryce Johnson picked up where he left off in the PCL, collecting a pair of hits to extend his Triple-A hitting streak to eight games in the win. The veteran outfielder has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 for El Paso dating back to June 5.  While his offensive output in San Diego was sub-par, his .430 on-base percentage was leading Triple-A at the time of his promotion. … New 40-man roster addition Brandon Lockridge had his first career five-hit game, including a pair of doubles.  The outfielder acquired at the deadline also stole his career-best 46th base on the season compared to six caught stealing.  With his recent hot streak, Lockridge is now hitting .346/.440/.458 in 28 games for El Paso. Stop us if you heard this before.  A lefty was on the mound, and Eguy Rosario took him deep.  Rosario hit his 20th home run on the PCL season, lifting his slugging percentage against southpaws to .720 on the year. Including the three homers he hit in San Diego, Rosario has a new career high. He became the first Chihuahua ever to have a 20-20 season when he did it in 2022, but with 13 stolen bases and less than three weeks left, it might be difficult for him to repeat. … The Chihuahuas got a quality outing from former big leaguer Carl Edwards Jr. The two-time former Padre pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out 10. It was the first time since July 5, 2013, that the 33-year-old reached double-digit strikeouts. Edwards has a 4.83 ERA in seven starts for the Chihuahuas this year.

Missions 8, Tulsa Drillers 6

Key Stats: RHP Sam Whiting 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 4 K; LHP Jackson Wolf 2 IP, H, BB, 2 K; LHP Ryan Och 1.2 IP, K, BB; C Anthony Vilar 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI; 3B Marcos Castañon 1-for-5, HR (12), 3 RBI; RF Robert Perez Jr 1-for-3, R, BB, 2B

Prospect Watch: The Missions tallied eight runs on only five hits as they stormed back to win, plating runs via a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a groundout, and an error. The one big blast in the game came courtesy of Marcos Castañon. His go-ahead three-run home run was his first in over two weeks. The former Gaucho tied his season high with three RBIs.  After posting over an .800 OPS each of the last two years, Castañon’s OPS currently sits at .672. A month ago, Anthony Vilar was enjoying his best year in the Padres organization. The catcher was hitting .257/.378/.390 with Fort Wayne, arguably one of their best hitters. Since his promotion, the 25-year-old from South Florida has not had the same success. Vilar came in hitting .098/.258/.118 in the Texas League, but went 2-for-4 with a double for his first Double-A multi-hit game. … Ryan Och came on with runners at second and third, one out, and a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth. Until recently, the lefty has been something of a ground ball machine, but despite good overall results for San Antonio, he’s been giving up more fly balls. That played out again as he yielded a sacrifice fly that pushed across the tying run, but the 26-year-old didn’t allow any more damage, and after his offense grabbed the lead again in the ninth, he shut down Tulsa to pick up the save. He sports a 39:9 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 26.1 innings for the Missions.

South Bend Cubs 2, TinCaps 1

Key Stats: RHP Enmanuel Pinales 6 IP, 3 H, ER, 4 BB, 3 K; DH Ethan Salas 0-for-4, 3 K; 2B Nerwilian Cedeño 2-for-3, 2B; RF Nick Vogt 1-for-2, R, BB

Prospect Watch: In what should be his last start of the season, Enmanuel Pinales ended his breakout campaign by throwing six one-run innings. Pinales has allowed fewer than two earned runs in four straight starts. He wasn’t as sharp as he’s been in many outings, issuing four walks and only striking out three, but the only run he allowed was on a homer to open the sixth inning. The 23-year-old will finish his second year in the States with a 3.49 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 111 innings.  … The TinCaps offense mustered up just one run on four hits with 12 strikeouts. Nerwilian Cedeño had the only multi-hit game and added the club’s only extra-base hit to continue a much-needed hot streak at the end of a disappointing season. Cedeño broke out of a 4-for-42 slump last week and has turned up the fire with a 10-game hitting streak. He has three consecutive multi-hit games, collecting an extra-base hit in each. He’s 17-for 41 in his hitting streak, bumping his OPS back up to .650 after it dipped to a low of .605.

Javier Chacon has stepped up since moving to the Storm rotation. (Photo: Robert Escalante)

Storm 7, Inland Empire 66ers 4

Key Stats: LHP Javier Chacon (W, 6-2) 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K; RHP Tyson Neighbors 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 2 K; CF Kai Roberts 2-for-4, R, RBI, BB, SB (14); 1B Lamar King Jr 1-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 BB; RF Sean Barnett 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R

Prospect Watch: The Storm refuse to lose, picking up their 12th win in 15 games. They pushed across seven runs in the first three innings and then held on for the win. Lamar King Jr. had the first big hit of the game with a bases-loaded two-RBI single. He would delivered the final RBI of the night by taking a bases-loaded walk. King now has 15 RBI in 23 games with the Storm and is hitting .287/.370/.460 over the last month. Watch for our interview with him later today. Kai Roberts added an RBI hit of his own as he collected two more hits. This year’s seventh-round pick is hitting .344/.417/.462 with Lake Elsinore.  He has scored 25 runs in only 22 games as a table-setter for a Storm offense that is averaging more than seven runs a game in the second half. The University of Utah product has converted on all 14 of his stolen base attempts as he toys with Low-A pitchers and catchers. Sean Barnett collected a pair of hits including a double to continue a strong showing at the plate since joining the Storm two weeks ago. The Padres’ 11th-round pick as a two-way player is hitting .298/.340/.500. While he is throwing bullpens, he won’t get onto the mound competitively until next summer. … Javier Chacon finished the regular season strong, throwing five innings of two-run ball to pick up the victory. The Cuban-born left-hander has worked five innings in each of his last three outings after moving into the rotation last month. He struggled with command out of the bullpen early in the year, but has reined in his walk rate over the final third of the season. The 21-year-old has the repertoire to develop as a starter next year if he can stay in the strike zone.
