Prospect Watch: The Chickasaw Brockton Ballpark in Oklahoma City is one of the few venues in the PCL that doesn’t significantly favor hitters, and it showed as the Chihuahuas lost 1-0 Saturday night. The only run of the game came on an Andy Pages solo home run in the eighth off Alek Jacob. … After giving up nine runs against Reno in his previous outing, Nabil Crismatt had his best start of the season. Crismat, 29, began the year with Oklahoma City before moving on to Round Rock, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, then returning to the Padres organization in mid-July. He has a 6.34 ER in 61 innings in the PCL this season. … Brandon Lockridge, collected the only hit of the night for El Paso, a single in the sixth inning. The center fielder also collected a walk. In 19 games and 84 plate appearances since joining the Padres from the Yankees organization at the trade deadline, he has a .728 OPS. … With two out and the run in in the eighth, Tom Cosgrove came on for his ninth appearance of the month and, as he has in each of the other games, kept OKC off the board. He has allowed just one earned run in 12 innings since being rejoining the Chihuahuas from the IL. … El Paso has lost four out of five to OKC this week.

Roster Moves: Per Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune, RHP Lake Bachar will join the Padres today. Reliever Logan Gillaspie has been put on waivers to create space. Bachar was a fifth-round draft pick in 2016 and is the poster boy for perseverance.

Prospect Watch: Cole Cummings delivered a career night with five RBIs and Austin Krob earned the win as San Antonio halted a three-game losing streak. Cummings’ three-run home run put the Missions up in the third, and his double in the next inning put San Antonio up 6-1. He is second on the team with 10 home runs and leads the club with 53 RBI. Cummings has been up-and-down season with a .675 OPS in his second year in the Alamo City. … Joshua Mears hit his second solo home run in three games with the Missions. So far, he’s had 13 plate appearances with three hits, a walk, and seven strikeouts. In 2022, Mears played briefly in San Antonio, posting a .639 OPS in 93 plate appearances. … Romeo Sanabria had a hit and drew four walks on the night. In 16 games since joining the Missions, the big first baseman has reached base at a stellar .515 clip. While his .526 average on balls in play certainly isn’t sustainable, the 22-year-old has maintained a 16% walk rate since the Padres drafted him out of junior college in 2022. … Krob, 24, got his first win since July 4 but has pitched much better than his record would indicate. This month, in five starts, the lefty from Texas Christian University has a 2.39 ERA in 26.1 innings. He’s allowed seven earned runs in the month, and five of them were in one start in Springfield. The lefty is second in the organization with 107 innings of work this year. … After winning the opener, San Antonio dropped three and will attempt to split the series on Sunday.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps’ pitchers found a great way to halt the team’s nine-game losing streak; strike everyone out. While they didn’t quite do that on Saturday night, they did get 17 Peoria Chiefs by way of the K. The star of the night was Braden Nett, who went six innings for the second time this season and struck out a season-high 10 batters. An indication of how far Nett has come this year is that he struck out more hitters Saturday than he did in all of July and matched his total from June. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder signed as an undrafted free agent in 2022 out of St. Charles Community College in Missouri. With his plus fastball and deep arsenal, he will likely be a popular name on post-season Padres top prospect lists. … Lefty Fernando Sanchez, 23, was also impressive, striking out five in two and one-third innings. This month, the Mexican native has a 1.23 ERA in 14.2 innings and has only allowed two runs. On the year, he has 80 strikeouts in 67.1 innings split between Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne. … Ethan Salas had a single and walked to move his on-base streak up 17 games, the fourth-longest active streak in the Midwest League. He is in the midst of his best month with a .256/.326/.449 line, collecting more than a third of his extra-base hits for the year. He’s pushed his season average above .200.

Prospect Watch: The Storm keeps rolling, taking their fourth game out of five against the Dodgers’ affiliate in Rancho Cucamonga. They are tied with San Jose for the best record in the second half at 31-22. Although the team already qualified for the playoffs in the first half, most of the roster has turned over in the last six weeks. They are getting a big boost from the latest draft class, and USD product Jack Costello has been a big part of it. In the first inning, he reached first on a throwing error that brought in two runs, and in the sixth, he went the more conventional route with a line drive to left field for a two-run home run. Oswaldo Linares added another two-run home run later in the inning to put the Storm up 6-0 as they held on, with a few hiccups, for an 8-5 win. The former Southern California prepster hit .291/.369/.470 for the Toreros this year, but has been even better in his first 78 plate appearances since the Padres selected him in the 10th round. The 23-year-old has delivered a .967 OPS and five home runs among nine extra-base hits in his first 16 professional games. … … Sean Barnett, taken in the 11th round from Division II Wingate University, had a big night with three hits. Barnett was selected as a two-way player, but won’t begin his pitching build-up until instructional league work. With the Bulldogs, he had a 1.138 OPS in 271 plate appearances and threw 17.2 innings as a reliever with a 9.68 ERA. … Miguel Mendez delivered another strong outing, tossing five innings of shutout ball. While the 21-year-old continues to issue more walks than he’d like, he’s been very impressive in the second half, posting a 1.95 ERA with just 24 hits allowed against 46 strikeouts in 37 innings over the last two months. The rail-thin righty has maintained his upper-90s velocity even as he blows past his previous career high of 54.1 innings of work.
