Prospect Watch: Tuesday night was the Tirso Ornelas show in El Paso, as the outfielder hit a walk-off, two-run shot to give the Chihuahuas the win against intrastate rival Sugar Land. … Ornelas’ walk-off blast capped a three-hit night. He finished a double shy of the cycle and drove in three runs. On April 16, Ornelas went 0-for-4 to drop his batting average to a paltry .088. Since then, the Tijuana native has gone 14-for-34 with two doubles and two homers. The offensive output has raised his overall line to .250/.338/.441 to end April with an offensive production about 9% below average in the PCL. … Veteran Donovan Solano had two more hits, including a double. The veteran infielder is hitting .286/.364/.464 since joining the Chihuahuas roster. The 36-year-old has extensive big-league experience and has generally been productive at the plate. The right-handed hitter will continue to wait for his next big league opportunity while providing a solid bat for El Paso. … Lefty Jackson Wolf pitched a gem but did not factor in the decision. He worked a season-high five innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He walked a pair and struck out 10. The ten strikeouts were just one off his career-high – a feat he reached in a game last July while with the MIssions. The 25-year-old has pitched a 5.95 ERA in five starts for the Chihuahuas.

Prospect Watch: The Missions made a 600-mile pilgrimage from San Antonio to North Little Rock, Arkansas where they lost in a morning game against the Travelers. … Nathan Martorella reached base twice with a double and a walk and drove in a pair of runs. The 23-year-old first baseman has been a consistent offensive force for the Missions, who have struggled to score runs aside from their opening series in Amarillo. The former Cal Bear is hitting a solid .293/.388/.439 with a pair of homers this season. … Ripken Reyes singled and drew a pair of walks out of the leadoff spot. The 27-year-old had a .408 on-base percentage last year for the Missions. This year, Reyes has struggled a bit out of the gate, hitting just .203/.338/.234. After getting hit by a pitch a record-setting 49 times last season, he’s already been plunked seven times this season. … Lefty Austin Krob made the start for the Missions and once again, he was a bit too hittable. Krob allowed three runs on seven hits, walking a pair and striking out five in 4.2 innings. The southpaw has allowed 21 hits in 19 innings on his way to a 6.16 ERA in five games (four starts). Much like last year, Krob has done a good job of keeping the ball in the yard. He’s allowed just one homer this season. … After Krob left, righty Josh Roberson took over and pitched well. The 27-year-old recorded four outs without allowing a baserunner. He struck out a pair of Travelers as well. Roberson spent most of last season pitching in Triple-A Durham with the Rays. He was traded at the deadline to the Cubs where he made five appearances for Triple-A Iowa before the Cubs released him. He signed with the Padres as a free agent this winter.

Prospect Watch: Coming off a rough series at home, things didn’t go better for the TinCaps in Ohio. They managed just six singles Tuesday and lost on a poorly executed rundown in extra innings. … Enmanuel Pinales turned in arguably the best start of any Padres farmhand this year in the loss. The 23-year-old righty completed six innings and allowed just two hits. He walked one and struck out seven batters. Pinales needed just 77 pitches to complete his six innings of work. Pinales worked four innings in each of his first three starts before Tuesday’s gem lowered his season ERA to 3.00. Pinales signed out of the Dominican Republic shortly before his 21st birthday, but has shown a nice mix of offspeed pitches with a fastball that occasionally touches 95. … Francis Peña completed two innings of work and managed to keep the Captains off the scoreboard. He walked one and struck out two. In six outings this season, the 23-year-old has allowed just one earned run in 10.1 innings. The hard-throwing righty was another older $10,000 signee in the 2022 international free agent class. … Kai Murphy singled and drew a walk out of the leadoff spot. The former Arizona State pitcher-turned-outfielder will finish April with a .722 OPS that hovers around the league average. … Ethan Salas singled in four plate appearances. He finished April with a .219/.346/.281 slash-line.
Roster Moves: Catcher Colton Vincent was added to the TinCaps’ roster to give them a full 30-man complement. Vincent was in extended spring training after starting the year on the Storm roster.
San Jose Giants 5, Storm 4
Key Statistics: 3B Jay Beshears, 1-for-4, R, BB; RF Braedon Karpathios, 2-for-2, 2 R, 2B, 3 BB, RBI; LF Ryan Wilson, 1-for-4, 2B, RBI, BB; LHP Fernando Sanchez, 2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, ER, 5 K; RHP Xavier Ruiz (L, 1-1) 2 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 K; RHP Will Varmette, 2 IP, H, 3 K

Prospect Watch: The Storm played their second pre-noon game in as many weeks and like the first one, this one ended in a Storm defeat. They are 1-6 on their current 12-game excursion away from The Diamond. … Braedon Karpathios had a productive day, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. He singled, doubled, and drew three walks. The 20-year-old signed with the Padres as undrafted free agent in 2022, out of community college in Maryland. Last season, Karpathios drew 44 walks in 42 games for the Storm but didn’t make much impact in the power department. This year, Karpathios has looked much improved with five doubles and a homer in 17 games for a .300/.457/.414 line. … Jay Beshears singled and drew a walk in the Storm loss. The former Duke infielder had a stellar April, finishing the month with a .527 on-base percentage. His .973 OPS ranks sixth in the circuit. … After struggling throughout most of the season, righty Will Varmette turned in a clean outing. The 23-year-old from Huntsville, Alabama pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while notching a pair of strikeouts. Varmette had a nightmare start to start the year, allowing five runs in back-to-back outings while trying to move into a starting rotation for the first time since high school. He’s settled down in a pair of relief outings. He can dial it up to the upper 90s, which has helped him to strike out 14 batters in just 9.1 innings, but he’s also walked 14.
