Round Rock Express 9, Chihuahuas 6

Key Statistics:  3B Clay Dungan 3-for-4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI; LF Cal Mitchell 2-for-5; 2B Nate Mondou 1-for-3, 2B, BB; SS Mason McCoy 2-for-5; RF Tim Locastro 1-for-3, HBP; RHP Randy Vásquez (L, 0-1) 4.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R (5 ER), BB, 4 K, HR; RHP Kevin Kopps 1 IP, H, K; LHP Adrian Morejon 1 IP, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas split their opening series with Round Rock as a six-run fifth inning sank El Paso on Sunday afternoon. Clay Dungan continued his torrid RBI streak with three more as he fell a home run short of the cycle. He has 18 RBI in his first nine games and a 1.116 OPS on the season so far. … For some reason, the Padres organization attracts players who don’t move off of home plate when projectiles are being fired at them. In the past, El Paso has seen Ty France, known for not moving off the plate; last year, Ripken Reyes set the minor league record when he was hit 49 times in San Antonio. This season, Tim Locastro has already been plunked five times in 17 plate appearances, including one Sunday. … Randy Vásquez, the top prospect in the Sun City, struggled in his first start, allowing five earned runs in 4.1 innings. Vásquez, who relies on movement more than velocity, might have a tough time in the altitudes of the PCL, where the ball doesn’t move as much. … Adrian Morejon posted his second straight solid outing after struggling on Tuesday. The Cuban lefty threw 14 pitches, 11 of which were for strikes, on his way to a pair of punchouts.

Prospect Watch: The good news for the home team was that they were finally able to prevent the Missions from scoring in double digits; the bad news is that it still wasn’t enough to avoid an opening series sweep of the team that they eliminated from last year’s Texas League playoffs. As they have through the entire series, the Missions got solid starting pitching from a key prospect, this time from Ryan Bergert, who pounded the zone with 44 strikes in 58 pitches. … The Missions bullpen showed well until Woo-Suk Go surrendered two runs in the ninth. The signee out of Korea this winter worked a clean inning on opening day and had four strikeouts through his first two outings. … At the plate,  San Antonio got home runs from Connor Hollis and Marcos Castañon, the first for each on the year. … It was a massive series for Nathan Martorella, who hit .571 during the series with a pair of doubles and a home run. He looked much better defensively at first base than last year, particularly when digging balls out of the dirt.

TinCaps 2, Great Lakes Loons 0

Key Statistics: C Ethan Salas 1-for-4, BB, SB (2); CF Homer Bush, Jr. 1-for-4, BB; DH Griffin Doersching 2-for-5, 2 2B RBI; RHP Dylan Lesko 4 IP, 3 BB, K; RHP Jose Geraldo 1 IP, 2 K; LHP Miguel Cienfuegos (W, 1-0) 2 IP, 5 K; RHP Francis Pena 1 IP, 2 K; LHP Ryan Och 1 IP, H, 3 K

Prospect Watch: After two very close games, the TinCaps got their first win as their pitching staff carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning before Poway High School graduate Kyle Nevin, the son of former Padre Phil Nevin, singled up the middle off Ryan Och. .. Dylan Lesko got his first start of the year, and held the Loons hitless although he struggled with his command. The righty needed 53 pitches –  only 25 for strikes – to get through four innings. Jose Geraldo, Miguel Cienfuegos, 27 – who joined the Padres last season after four years in the independent leagues -, Francis Pena, and Och threw the next five and didn’t allow a run while striking out 10, including three by Och to close out the game. .. Offensively, Ethan Salas continued to impress, reaching base twice and stealing his second base of the year. The organization is hitting Salas leadoff, so he will get the most plate appearances possible, but the athletic Salas can run. … A nice day by Griffin Doersching, 25, who connected on a pair of doubles and now has four hits in his first three games to go along with a pair of walks.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 14, Storm 7

Key Statistics: 3B Jay Beshears 2-for-3, 2B, 3 BB, SB; LF Nick Vogt 2-for-4, 2 2B; C Colton Vincent 2-for-2, RBI 3 BB; RHP Carson Montgomery 2 IP, H, 4 R (3 ER), 5 BB, 3 K, HR; LHP Javier Chacon 1 IP, 3 K

Prospect Watch: Carson Montgomery held the visitors scoreless in his first two innings despite three walks, but the wheels came off in the third. After an error by shortstop Rosman Verdugo, Montgomery walked the next batter, followed by a home run and another walk before he was pulled. He threw 57 pitches on the day, but only 26 were for strikes. … It was a big day for former Duke star Jay Beshears, 21, who reached base five times and looked good defensively at third base. Beshears had four hits in his first three games to go along with six walks for a .667 on-base percentage. .. Nick Vogt, yet another Gaucho from UC-Santa Barbara, had a solid day with a pair of doubles and has opened the season with five hits in his first three games. .. On the other side, the top prospect in Lake Elsinore, Dillon Head, had a tough day, going 0-for-6 with three strikeouts. He has K’ed five times in his first 16 plate appearances.
