Prospect Watch: The midday game started off with a bang for El Paso as Bryce Johnson and Samad Taylor hit back-to-back homers to give the Chihuahuas an early 2-0 lead. For Johnson, who jumped the first pitch of the game, it was his first home run since last September 13 against the Rockies. He hit the ball 402 feet to straightaway center field, making it his longest hit of the season. The home run immediately made this his best month since being demoted to Triple-A. In 12 games this month, the switch-hitter is batting .271 with a .785 OPS. … Three pitches later, Taylor hit his eighth PCL home run of the season in his second official rehab game after he spent a week working in games in Peoria. In 53 games with El Paso this year, Taylor has hit .313 with a .903 OPS. In 26 games with the Padres, Taylor has put together a .330 average with an .808 OPS. … After that, it was all downhill for El Paso as Round Rock put up 14 unanswered runs. Will Wagner reached base three times, including his 15th extra-base hit in 60 Triple-A games. It was his first multi-hit game since August 4 and snapped a 4-for-29 skid. In August, Wagner is batting .267 with a .673 OPS. … José Leclerc got knocked around in his first appearance after being promoted to Triple-A Tuesday. The big league veteran, who has been working back from last year’s shoulder surgery over the last month, gave up three runs on five hits and a hit batter. The righty sat 92-93 with his fastball, about one MPH below where he has over the past several years. He only used his slider – long his most effective pitch – four times, getting two whiffs on three swings.

Key Stats: LHP Luis Gutierrez 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K; RHP Eric Yost 6.1 IP, 4 H, 6 K; LF Albert Fabian 3-for-5, 2B, R, RBI; RF Alex McCoy 1-for-4, BB; 1B Romeo Sanabria 2-for-3, RBI, BB, SB (6); 2B Wyatt Hoffman 1-for-2, 2B, 2 BB; SS Justin DeCriscio 1-for-3, R, BB, SB (1)
Prospect Watch: Eric Yost likely locked up pitcher of the week honors with a stellar outing. Yost, 23, came on in relief in a piggyback roll and delivered his longest outing of the year with 6.1 scoreless innings. He did not walk a batter for the first time since April 10 while striking out six. The former 15th-round pick has been alternating good and bad outings, allowing zero, three, one, five, and zero earned runs in his last five appearances. On the season, Yost has a 7-2 record and a 3.22 ERA over 89.1 innings with the Missions. … Yost followed Luis Gutierrez, who is still building back up after missing most of the season with a shoulder injury. Gutierrez began the season by allowing just one run over his first seven innings with the Missions but left his third start. He just came off the 60-day IL after a month building up in the desert and Fort Wayne. He was one of the best starters in the system last season, striking out 115 batters in 125 innings while posting a 3.31 ERA. The 54 pitches he threw Wednesday were a new season high as he looks to build up his workload before the end of the season. The 23-year-old will be Rule 5 eligible this winter. … Romeo Sanabria knocked in the game-tying run as he reached base three times. The big first baseman also stole his fifth base of the season. Over four games, Sanabria is 7-for-13 with a double and four walks. Since returning to San Antonio, Sanabria is batting .350/.422/.525.

Key Stats: RHP Winyer Chourio 3 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 3 K; RHP Jeferson Villabona 3 IP, 2 H; 3B Kerrington Cross 4-for-4, R, RBI, SB (19); RF Conner Westenburg 2-for-4, 3B, R, 2 RBI; 1B Yoiber Ocopio 1-for-3, R, RBI

Prospect Watch: Speedy outfielder Conner Westenburg delivered the big hit of the game with a two-run triple to give Fort Wayne their third straight win over Great Lakes. It was Westenburg’s first extra-base hit since joining the TinCaps at the beginning of the month. The former undrafted free agent was hitting .264 with 45 stolen bases in Lake Elsinore before his promotion but has been held under .200 since joining Fort Wayne. In his first year of pro ball, Westenburg has reached base at a solid .340 clip and his 47 stolen bases put him in the top 20 across all of minor league baseball. … Kerrington Cross has also struggled to make the adjustment to High-A. After hitting .313 with a 1.075 OPS in Lake Elsinore, Cross began this week hitting .193 with a .664 OPS with Fort Wayne. However, after a 4-for-4 night, Cross has reached base safely in all seven of his plate appearances this week, raising his Midwest League OPS by 70 points. After starting the month 4-for-26, Cross has added another six hits and is now hitting .313 with an .888 OPS in August. Cross knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, he fielded a soft dribbler at third base and made a nice cross-body throw for the final out. … Winyer Chourio – another prospect who found success with the Storm but has struggled in High-A – is showing signs of finding his footing in the Midwest League. The 22-year-old righty tossed three scoreless frames to open the game, working around three hits and as many walks. He also punched out three and has now allowed just one run in his last seven innings. Chourio had allowed 22 runs over 16.1 innings before this stretch after impressing with a 3.31 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 51 innings with the Storm. Chourio is in his second season stateside after signing late for just $10,000. His stuff has ticked up enough to put him firmly on the prospect radar, but he has struggled to command his arsenal. His ability to work around six baserunners shows he has the raw talent to pitch his way out of jams, but so far lacks the control to prevent those jams from happening in the first place.

Prospect Watch: It was an extremely rough day for the Storm. Lake Elsinore managed just two hits and struck out 14 times. By the time the first Storm batter reached base with two outs in the fifth, the score was already 9-0. Perhaps the most important news of the game came when Michael Salina took the mound in the seventh inning. Less than two weeks ago, Salina walked off the mound with trainers in his first full-season appearance. The righty, who the Padres have been excited about since they selected him in the fourth round last year in the wake of Tommy John surgery, has had a rocky recovery from the procedure. The righty, who ran his fastball up to triple-digits before the surgery, made two appearances in May before shutting down for two months after experiencing soreness in his shoulder. The second pause in his return came from an extra-cautious response to discomfort he felt as he navigates the challenge of figuring out what is typical soreness and what is concerning hurt. The on-fielder results weren’t great as he gave up runs on a pair of hits and a walk as he threw 23 pitches to get through an inning, but the important thing is that he is healthy. … San Jose’s perfect game was broken up by Jesmaylin Arias, who doubled with two outs in the fifth inning. The 19-year-old later drew a walk and came around to score the team’s only run on a wild pitch. It was his third extra-base hit in 10 games since joining the Storm. Between the ACL and Lake Elsinore, Arias is hitting .267 with a .852 OPS. … The other hit came courtesy of second-round pick Elliot Lascelles. The 18-year-old hit his first professional double to lead off the seventh inning and also drew his first walk. In two games, Lascelles is now 4-for-7 with a double, triple, walk, and stolen base.
