Las Vegas Aviators 5, Chihuahuas 1

Key Stats: LHP Jackson Wolf 4 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, BB, 6 K; RF Bryce Johnson 0-for-3, R, BB, SB (7); 3B Marcos Castañon 1-for-3, RBI, BB

Prospect Watch: El Paso managed just one hit in the game, a first inning Marcos Castañon RBI single to give the Chihuahuas a brief lead. Castañon has posted a .175 ISO this season, his best mark since 2023. The former UC-Santa Barbara Gaucho has been a steady presence in the Padres’ minor league system throughout the 2020s. Over his career, he has struck out 21.7% of the time, but that figure has dropped to 17.2% this season, making him one of the toughest hitters to strike out on the Chihuahuas. Castañon has also expanded his defensive versatility. While third base remains his primary position, he has appeared in 25 games at second base and 18 at first. … Although the Chihuahuas struggled to make contact, they did draw 10 walks. Six of those came in three innings against former Padres prospect Braden Nett, who was traded to the Athletics in the Mason Miller deal. In 23 innings after being added to the 40-man roster this season, the right-hander has issued 28 walks while striking out 31. … After recording six consecutive starts of at least five innings, Jackson Wolf was knocked out after four. The left-hander walked just one batter but needed 83 pitches to complete his outing. Wolf made his lone major league start with the Padres in 2023 before being traded to the Pirates a week later in the deal for Padres legend Rich Hill. While Wolf has struggled at Triple-A this season, he has been one of the organization’s most dependable innings eaters, throwing at least 100 innings in each of the past four seasons. He is just 16 innings away from reaching that milestone for a fifth straight year.

Prospect Watch: The offense failed to record an extra-base hit and produced just two RBI hits, both coming off the bat of Braedon Karpathios. Karpathios has now hit safely in eight consecutive starts, and after batting .165 in April, he has raised his average back above .240. He is hitting .268 in July, but strikeouts remain an issue. Karpathios has struck out in four straight games and leads the team with 109 this season. … Jake Cunningham reached base twice, stole his 10th base of the season, and threw out one of baseball’s top prospects, Sebastian Walcott, with a perfect throw to the plate. While his power has tapered off since reaching Double-A, Cunningham is batting .302 with an .800 OPS at the level and has an .890 mark overall on the year. … Despite the final score, the story of the game was the Missions’ pitching staff, which combined for 16 strikeouts. Tucker Musgrove, one of the Padres’ breakout performers in last fall’s Arizona Fall League, finally delivered the outing many have been looking for. He faced seven batters, struck out five, and hit one. After posting a 3.79 ERA and an otherworldly 44% strikeout rate with Fort Wayne, Musgrove now owns a 4.15 ERA and a still elite 41.5% rate in the Texas League. Most encouragingly, he did not issue a walk for the first time since his promotion. Musgrove had walked nine batters in his first 6.2 Double-A innings and still carries a 16.7% walk rate on the season. When he throws strikes, even advanced hitters struggle to make contact. … From a right-hander with an upper-90s fastball to nearly the opposite profile, left-hander Igor Gil also struck out five over two scoreless innings. Gil relies heavily on a devastating curveball that generates plenty of swings and misses, though his command can can be inconsistent too. In his Double-A debut, he struck out five of the seven batters he faced. Gil averaged 12.8 K/9 with Fort Wayne but also walked nearly a batter per inning. It was an impressive debut nonetheless. … Jamie Hitt made his organizational debut earlier this season and has already earned two promotions to reach Double-A. After allowing one run in his first outing at the level, Hilt was tagged for seven runs over five innings. The former eighth-round pick now owns a 5.67 ERA across three levels this season.

Lake County Captains 9, TinCaps 1

Key Stats: RHP Winyer Chourio 3.1 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, BB, 4 K; RHP Jose Leclerc IP, H; CF Ryan Wideman 2-for-4, SB (51); LF Alex McCoy 1-for-4, SB (16);

Prospect Watch: While the final line was rough, Winyer Chourio showed encouraging progress from his final start before the All-Star break. Chourio had pitched tentatively during his first three High-A starts, issuing 12 walks in 10.1 innings. This time, he attacked the strike zone from the outset. He retired the first nine batters he faced, striking out three while flashing his upper-90s fastball. After loading the bases with one out in the fourth, Chourio appeared to induce an inning-ending double play, but the ball skipped under the first baseman’s glove for a two-run single. Chourio exited shortly afterward, and both runners he left on base came around to score. Despite the inflated ERA, the 22-year-old has struck out 88 batters in 65.1 innings while holding opponents to a .211 batting average. … Ten years older than Chourio, José Leclerc shifted his rehab assignment with Fort Wayne. The former Rangers reliever had appeared in six games for the ACL Padres before moving up to the TinCaps, where he tossed a scoreless inning on 16 pitches. Leclerc signed a minor league contract with San Diego in late March and, coincidentally, is expected to complete his rehab just before the trade deadline. … When Ryan Wideman was promoted to Fort Wayne on June 22, he was batting .314 with an .893 OPS while leading all of professional baseball with 43 stolen bases. His transition has been challenging, but he appears to be heating up after posting back-to-back multi-hit games for the second time since his promotion. After never going more than five games without a stolen base in Lake Elsinore, Wideman swiped his first bag since July 5. Even with the drought, his 51 stolen bases still lead all of Minor League Baseball, seven ahead of the next closest player.

Visalia Rawhide 13, Storm 1

Key Stats: RHP Carson Swilling 2 IP, 3 H, R, 3 K; 2B Yimy Tovar 1-for-4, 2B; DH Jorge Quintana 1-for-3, 3B, R, BB; 1B Yoiber Ocopio 1-for-3, BB

Prospect Watch: It was a game to forget for the Storm, who were outhit 17-3 as Visalia scored in all but one inning. Jorge Quintana hit his second triple of the season and scored the team’s only run. Acquired from the Brewers for Brandon Lockridge at last year’s trade deadline, Quintana is finally beginning to show signs of breaking out after three months of struggling to make hard contact. He has drawn a walk in three consecutive games and has reached base safely in every game this month, posting a .383 OBP. In July, the 19-year-old is batting .275 with an .834 OPS. … The only other extra-base hit belonged to Yimy Tovar. Although he has recorded a hit in eight of his last nine games, this was his first extra-base hit since July 8. The 20-year-old is batting just .190 in the Cal League, but has improved to .259 with a .690 OPS in July.

ACL Reds 2, ACL Padres 0 (7 innings)

Key Stats: LHP Adler Cecil 5 IP, H, 2 BB, 8 K; LF Eddson Martinez 1-for-3, SB (8); 3B Santiago Vargas 1-for-3

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres managed just three baserunners — two singles and a walk — in a shutout loss. Eddson Martinez collected one of those hits and stole his eighth base since coming stateside last month. In 22 games with the ACL Padres, the 18-year-old is hitting .378 with a .944 OPS. He has hit safely in 13 of his 15 games this month while batting .396. … The star of the game was starter Adler Cecil. After missing all of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Cecil has steadily built up his workload. This marked the second time he completed five innings this season and the first time he did so without allowing a run. The Temecula native struck out eight while walking two. Over his last six starts, Cecil owns a 3.28 ERA with a 14.96 K/9. With the ACL season winding down, there’s a good chance the Padres send him up the road from home to Lake Elsinore.
