Key Statistics: 3B Luis Rengifo 1-for-4, R, HR (2), RBI; CF Carlos Rodriguez 2-for-4; RF Nick Solak 1-for-4, R, HR (11), 2 RBI; C Blake Hunt 1-for-3, R, HR (4), RBI; RHP Evan Fitterer (W, 3-2) 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, 2 K; LHP Miguel Cienfuegos 2 IP, BB, K; RHP Ethan Routzahn (S, 7) IP, BB, 2 K

Prospect Watch: El Paso rode excellent pitching and three home runs to a win against Sacramento. … Organizational newcomer Luis Rengifo slugged his second homer of the season in Friday’s victory. Rengifo signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Brewers, but suffice to say, things did not work out. The switch-hitting infielder has played parts of eight seasons in the big leagues, seven of them with the Los Angeles Angels. In 57 games this year, Rengifo posted a .534 OPS with Milwaukee before getting released. … Catcher Blake Hunt connected on his fourth homer as a Chihuahua – making his only hit of the evening count with a 108.8 mph exit velocity. Hunt, 27, should receive the majority of the playing time behind the dish moving forward, and thus far, he’s taken advantage. In 14 games with El Paso, Hunt has a .968 OPS. … Evan Fitterer slid back into the rotation Friday and tied a season-high by pitching six innings. He allowed a pair of runs on five hits, walking one and striking out two. The 26-year-old has a solid 3.52 ERA for El Paso this season, despite subpar results under the hood. The Orange County native has a below-average 16% K-rate while walking nearly 13% of batters faced. It’s hard to have an ERA under 6.00 with those results in the PCL, but Fitterer has used a 55.7% groundball rate and the ability to induce weak contact to outpitch his peripheral stats in his first in the Padres’ organization. The River Cats managed only an 81.9 mph average exit velocity against the minor league free agent signee.
Roster Move: The Padres released infielder Pablo Reyes from El Paso. The 33-year-old utility player had the right to opt-out on the first of the month as part of the free agent contract he signed in the offseason. With Rengifo in the fold and Nick Solak returning to the organization after he was outrighted, the path to regular playing time was unclear for Reyes.
Missions 3, Amarillo Sod Poodles 0

Prospect Watch: Three Missions pitchers combined to shut out the Sod Poodles, allowing just three hits. … At the plate, Tirso Ornelas drove in two runs and had a pair of singles in the win. His RBIs came on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. Ornelas hit six homers in June while batting .233/.303/.489. He’s off to a 4-for-9 start in July. … Andrew Thurman made just his second start of the year and fired four shutout innings before departing. He allowed only one hit while walking one and striking out four. Thurman, 34, is back in affiliated baseball for the first time since 2017 this season. The former second-rounder out of UC Irvine spent time in the Atlantic League last season but had otherwise been out of baseball for eight years. As Missions broadcaster Brian Yancelson profiled in his podcast Curves, Cannons, and Bells, Thurman spent his time away from baseball caring for his mother in her fight with cancer and working construction to make ends meet. In 22 games for the Missions this year, the righty has a 5.80 ERA. … Bernard Jose earned the save, tossing the final three innings of the evening. The 23-year-old allowed two hits and notched one strikeout. The 2026 season has been a whirlwind for Jose, who has hopefully enrolled in the frequent flyers club. He began the year in the TinCaps’ bullpen. However, he allowed 22 runs in 11 innings with Fort Wayne and was sent back to the complex to regroup. He pitched well there and was sent to San Antonio on June 16, then back to Fort Wayne on June 23, then back to San Antonio a week later. In three outings with the Missions, Jose has not allowed an earned run in 7.2 innings.
TinCaps 8, Great Lakes Loons 5

Prospect Watch: All it took was for John Conniff to put down the Powers hamburgers and leave town. The TinCaps socked a pair of homers and held on to defeat the Loons, ending a five-game losing streak in front of a crowd of over 6,000 at Parkview Field. … Justin DeCriscio had two hits, including his seventh homer as a TinCap. The versatile 23-year-old has seen time at five different positions this year, but the bulk of his playing time has come at short. DeCriscio is hitting .248/.347/.418 with the TinCaps. … Carlos Rodriguez had three singles and drove in a pair of runs in the victory. The left-handed-hitting catcher broke out with the Storm last season but has not been able to find the same kind of success this year. Rodriguez hit just .172/.324/.259 in June, but he’s looked better as of late, going 5-for-12 in his last four games. … Jack Costello hit his eighth homer as part of a multi-hit night. The former USD infielder had a brutal June, hitting just .179/.282/.343. He has shown signs of breaking out of it, as his two-hit game on Friday extended his hitting streak to five games. … Kash Mayfield started and tossed four innings before giving way to Abraham Parra. The 21-year-old lefty allowed a pair of runs on six hits, striking out five without issuing a walk. He worked around a triple to open the game, getting a strikeout and two grounders to avoid any damage, then picked off the next runner he allowed with an out in the third. The middle of the Loons lineup finally got to him in the fourth inning, stringing together four straight hits to plate the two runs he surrendered, but was able to finish the inning. Mayfield threw 54 pitches, 37 for strikes. After skipping a turn in the rotation in June, Mayfield has slowly built back up over the last three outings. In that span, he’s allowed four earned runs in 8.2 innings, issuing just one walk while striking out 11. The Oklahoma native has a 3.33 ERA for Fort Wayne this season. The Padres may opt to shift his throwing schedule heading into the Futures Game, which will be two weeks from Sunday.

Key Statistics: 3B Yimy Tovar 2-for-6, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI; CF Conner Westenburg, 2-for-4, R, RBI; 2B Dylan Grego 2-for-4, R, 2 2B, 4 RBI; LHP Kruz Schoolcraft (L, 1-5) 4.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 4 K; RHP Isaiah Lowe 3.2 IP, 3 H, ER, 2 BB, 6 K

Prospect Watch: The Storm fell behind 14-3 before a seven-run seventh made things interesting. However, that was as close as the Storm would get as they lost again, in front of a crowd of over 5,000. Lake Elsinore has lost 10 of their last 13 games. … Kruz Schoolcraft took a line drive off the back of his head in the fifth inning. While he was down for several minutes, he eventually got up and immediately walked off the field with the trainer and coaching staff. The big lefty saw some success through the first four innings despite struggles with location, but the wheels fell off in the fifth. The 19-year-old finished the night charged with six earned runs, tying the career-high he allowed in his season debut. Schoolcraft took his fifth loss of the year, walking three, while striking out four. The outing pushed his ERA to a not-so-convenient 7.11. We’ll have an update on his status when it is available, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him skip a turn. … Yimy Tovar had his first two Cal League doubles of the season and drove in a pair of runs in the loss. The 20-year-old started the year in the ACL for his second tour of duty in the desert. He earned a promotion to Lake Elsinore after producing a .933 OPS in 16 games at the complex. Tovar has struggled out of the gate for the Storm. Even with his multi-hit night game on Friday, he’s batting just .147/.221/.206 during his time in the Cal League. … Dylan Grego also had a pair of doubles and drove in a team-high four runs. The former Ball State infielder got off to a horrid start in the Midwest League before filling a roster need in El Paso for a week. Since then, he’s been relegated to Riverside County. In 17 games with the Storm, Grego has a .675 OPS.
ACL Rangers 7, ACL Padres 3
Key Statistics: DH Eddson Martinez 2-for-4, R, RBI; SS Santiago Vargas 2-for-4, 2B, RBI; 3B Abraham Bastidas 2-for-4; RHP José Leclerc IP, 2 K; LHP Adler Cecil (L, 1-3) 3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Adler Cecil has added strength as he comes back from Tommy John surgery. (Photo: Jerry Espinoza)
Prospect Watch: Veteran reliever José Leclerc started his rehab journey Friday, firing a scoreless first inning. He struck out a pair of batters before departing. The former Rangers and A’s hurler has appeared in 360 big league games over nine seasons, but couldn’t find a big league contract last winter as he recovered from shoulder surgery. He ultimately signed a minor league deal with the Padres as spring training ended and has been working his way back in the desert. Assuming his rehab goes well, he will give the Padres another experienced arm out of the bullpen late in the year. … Adler Cecil couldn’t find the same success that he did in his last outing, and he lost his third decision of the campaign. Cecil fired three innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out three. The 21-year-old has posted big strikeout numbers in the desert, but walks have been an issue. In 28.2 innings, he’s punched out 46 batters while walking 16. Overall, Cecil has a 5.97 ERA. … The offense managed just one extra-base hit in the loss … Eddson Martinez had a pair of hits out of the leadoff spot and also drove in a run. The diminutive outfielder (though he is bigger than his listed 5-foot-5 and 145 pounds) hit his way out of the DSL, earning a promotion stateside. In 12 games in the DSL, Martinez hit .442/.583/.698. Since coming stateside, the 18-year-old has a 1.060 OPS.
