Prospect Watch: After being reinstated from the 60-day IL and optioned to El Paso, Jhony Brito made his first appearance for the Chihuahuas. After not issuing a walk in either of his last two starts with the Missions, Brito battled command issues Wednesday, walking three batters in four innings. Despite missing last year following elbow surgery, Brito has had no trouble ramping his sinker back into the mid-90s. He averaged 94.8 mph on the night and topped out at 98. Brito relied primarily on his sinker and changeup but also mixed in a fair number of sweepers, sliders, and knuckle curves. The 28-year-old appears MLB-ready if and when he is needed, either in the rotation or out of the bullpen. … The El Paso offense was unable to generate much throughout the night. Backstop Blake Hunt scored the game’s first run after being hit by a pitch and later singled home the second run. Hunt is hitting .375 with a 1.075 OPS through his first five games with El Paso and has already established himself as the club’s primary catcher. AJ Preller drafted Hunt, traded him as part of the Blake Snell deal, and then reacquired him this offseason, suggesting that Preller still believes in the former top Padres prospect. … With two-thirds of last week’s starting outfield now in San Diego, Carlos Rodriguez has taken over as the primary center fielder. The former Braves prospect recorded El Paso’s only multi-hit game of the night, extending his hitting streak to a team-best 16 games. Even in the hitter-friendly environment of El Paso, Rodriguez does not provide much power, but he is batting .295 with a .358 OBP this season.
Transactions: Before the game, the Chihuahuas reinstated Triston McKenzie from the development list, and the Padres signed former first-round pick Nick Pratto, who the Rangers released the night before. With El Paso playing Texas ‘ Triple-A team, Pratto got to switch clubhouses mid-series.

Prospect Watch: Through four innings, it was shaping up to be a strong night for the TinCaps. Maikel Miralles cruised through the early stages of the game, allowing just one runner to reach third base. However, thing unraveled quickly in the fifth inning. Miralles allowed the first three batters to reach, with his own fielding error contributing to the damage, before surrendering a home run that turned a 1-0 lead into a 4-1 deficit. The 21-year-old posted a 2.13 ERA in 12 innings for the TinCaps last season, but he has struggled this year. Miralles now sits at 0-7 with a 9.87 ERA. … The TinCaps ‘ offense has been in a funk throughout the month, and Wednesday was no exception. Fort Wayne managed just five hits on the night. One of the bright spots was Justin DeCriscio, who reached base twice, stole a base, and drove in the game’s first run. With his hit, DeCriscio extended his on-base streak to 14 games. Since joining the TinCaps in mid-May, he has posted a .390 OBP, reaching base 37 times in 23 games. … Meanwhile, Fort Wayne’s offensive MVP has gone ice cold over the past two weeks. Two weeks ago, Alex McCoy was hitting .299 with a .969 OPS. Since then, he has gone just 2-for-31 with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Despite the slump, McCoy still leads the team with an .854 OPS.

Prospect Watch: It was just a typical night in Peoria as the ACL Padres scored five runs with two outs in the first inning, all without recording a hit. The rally featured six walks, two hit batters, three wild pitches, and a balk. For the game, the Padres scored 11 runs on just five hits while drawing 11 walks and being hit by four pitches. … Moises Valdez, 21, continued to pace the Padres offense. Hitting out of the leadoff spot, he capped the five-run first inning with a bases-loaded walk, his first of two free passes on the night. Through 13 games, he has reached base 22 times, good for a .431 OBP. In his first season stateside, Valdez owns a .920 OPS. … The game’s only extra-base hit belonged to catcher Jack Mathey, who collected his second double of the season and reached base a career-high three times. Even with the big night, Mathey’s OPS sits at .501 on the season. However, his value comes primarily on the defensive side. Although Padres pitchers were nearly as wild as their opponents, issuing five walks and hitting three batters, they did not throw a wild pitch. Mathey also threw out three runners attempting to steal, further contributing. … Wyatt Hoffman recorded his first hit of the season in the third game on his rehab assignment. He also drew a walk and scored a run.
