Prospect Watch:  The Chihuahuas broke their season-high five-game losing streak by pounding out 16 hits for 11 runs as the bottom of the order reached base 15 times in 20 plate appearances. Nate Mondou, 31, who has been on and off the Development List, led the team with four RBI as he collected a pair of doubles while reaching base three times. The 5-foot-8, left-handed hitter from Wake Forrest is in his third year in the organization and El Paso after spending time with the White Sox and Athletics organizations. He has an .815 OPS on the season. … Blake Hunt, who was drafted one round after Luis Campusano in 2017 and was then part of the Blake Snell deal with Tampa in 2020, has been on fire in his first three games back from the injured list. The 6-foot-4, Costa Mesa native went 3-for-4 with a double and was hit by a pitch. The 27-year-old, now a veteran of three different organizations, has five hits in his first 12 plate appearances in El Paso as he looks for an opportunity for his first major league appearance. … After a rough outing last Sunday in Albuquerque, Kyle Hart had a solid outing, throwing two shutout innings to close out the game. He surrendered Sugar Land’s only earned run of the game, but struck out three and issued only one walk. … Lefty Fernando Sanchez took a 109 mph line drive to the face against the second batter of the game. While the ball caromed all the way to third base to become an easy putout, Sanchez remarkably was able to sit up and walk off the field under his own power. We’ll have any updates when they become available.

Missions 4, Wichita Wind Surge 2

Key Statistics: SS Carson Tucker 3-for-5, 2B, SB (13); DH Braedon Karpathios 2-for-2, 3 BB, RBI; LF Albert Fabian 1-for-3, RBI; C Brendan Durfee 1-for-3, HR(1), BB; LHP Jagger Haynes 5.2 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB; RHP Andrew Thurman (W, 1-2) 1.1 IP, H, K; RHP Sadrac Franco IP, BB, 2 K; RHP Andrew Moore (S,1) IP, 3 K

Prospect Watch: After a rocky first inning, Jagger Haynes settled down and retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced without allowing a hit. That streak was snapped with a double to open the sixth inning. Haynes ultimately gave way with two on and two out in the frame. Andrew Thurman gave up a single to left to push across the second run of the day charged to Haynes. The lefty gave up two earned runs on three hits and as many walks over his 5.2 innings of work. The lefty owns a 4.50 ERA on the year while leading the organization by averaging more than five innings per start. After getting off to his customary slow April, Haynes was very good in May, posting a 3.93 ERA in 34.1 innings. Of his 85 pitches Saturday, 47 were for strikes. When he was locked in, he generated weak contact with a lot of movement down in the zone. … … The Missions pulled ahead on an Albert Fabian sacrifice fly in the eighth before Brendan Durfee gave San Antonio an insurance run by smacking an opposite-field home run for his first Double-A hit. The big left-handed hitter, getting a start behind the plate on an off day for Ethan Salas, missed the first two months of the year with an oblique injury. In addition to the big home run, he reached base on a walk and threw out the potential tying runner in the eighth. … Braedon Karpathios had a horrible spring training and a bad April, but after putting together a strong May, he has opened June with a huge series in Wichita. After a 2-for-2 day with three walks, he sports a .652 on-base percentage in 23 plate appearances on the week. … Carson Tucker, 24, continued his solid season with three hits, including a double, out of the leadoff spot. After sitting out 2024, the former Guardians first-round draft pick, who hit only .165 in 244 plate appearances in two years of Low-A, returned to action in the independent Pioneer League last summer, showing enough to earn a second chance with the Padres organization. This season, at 24 years old, he has a .285/.338/.382 slash line for the Missions. Sadrac Franco and Andrew Moore struck out the last five batters of the game, with Moore blowing a 100 mph fastball by the final batter to end the game in style. The righty, who came over from the Reds organization in exchange for Connor Joe last summer, continues to show nasty stuff, but has a walk rate north of 20% on the year. … Ryan Jackson took a 95 mph fastball to his front shoulder blade in the second inning. He stayed in the game to run, but gave way defensively in the bottom of the frame.

Lake County Captains 6, TinCaps 3

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps lost their fourth straight game, but for the first time in three, they kept the opposition in single digits. … Rosman Verdugo moved up the all-time Fort Wayne leaderboards with his ninth home run of the season and 23rd as a TinCap. On the year, the 21-year-old from Ensenada, Mexico who is now in his fifth season in the organization, had a pair of hits, to push his slash line to .229/.342/.418. He has significantly cut his strikeout rates this year while maintaining a 13.3% walk rate, giving hope for a surge in production over the second half. He been seeing more time at second base this year after spending much of last season at third. … Abraham Parra needed 77 pitches to make it through three innings, leading to his shortest outing of the year. The 20-year-old right-hander has flashed some impressive stuff at times this year, but he sports a 6.08 ERA as opponents have hit .276 and drawn walks at a 12.8% clip against him. He is still searching for his first win of the year. … Alex McCoy had a sacrifice fly and reached when he was hit by a pitch, but went 0-for-2 to continue another tough week. The big man from Baltimore is 2-for-13 with a pair of singles against the Guardians affiliate as teams start to make adjustments against him. He’s punched out 13 times in 44 trips to the plate over the last two series.

Fresno Grizzlies 8, Storm 6

Key Statistics: SS Jose Verdugo 1-for-3, BB; C Yoiber Ocopio 2-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI; 3B Bradley Frye 1-for-2, 3B, 2 RBI; RHP Tyler Schmitt 4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K; LHP Joseph Herrera (L, 2-3) 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, K; RHP Vicarte Domingo 2.0 IP, H, R, BB, 4 K

Prospect Watch: The Storm were up 5-1 going to the bottom of the fourth before the Grizzlies rallied to claim the victory. … Yoiber Ocopio clubbed his fourth home run as he collected another two-hit game. The 21-year-old catcher, now in his fourth year in the organization, is getting to his power much more consistently this year after a rough first stateside campaign last year. In 50 plate appearances, the right-handed hitter sports a .262/.337/.476 line and is now tied for second on the club with four homers. Ocopio is taking advantage of getting regular playing time with Ty Harvey likely on the IL for another 4-6 weeks. … Third baseman Bradley Frye collected a triple and drew two walks in four trips to the plate. The 23-year-old undrafted free agent got off to a monster start to the year, fueled by an average on balls in play well over .500.  Reality caught up with him in May when he hit just .193 and had only one extra-base hit. The Mercer University product has gotten back on track in Fresno, going 3-for-10 with a double, triple, and five walks. He still has an isolated power rate of only .098 for the year, but he’s showing better bat-to-ball skills and has added 15 stolen bases on the year.
