Jase Bowen continues to produce for El Paso. (Photo: Jorge Salgado)
Prospect Watch: El Paso brought the boomsticks out on Friday, as the offense swatted four homers and cruised to a win at home against Round Rock. … Marcos Castañon came into the game for Clay Dungan in the top of the third and proceeded to post a three-hit night. The Rialto, California native had a pair of singles, a double, and drove in a pair. The 27-year-old has swung the bat well in May, as he has significantly reduced his K-rate. After punching out 20 times in 78 plate appearances in April, he’s struck out just three times in 47 trips this month. Castañon can play second and third but doesn’t have great range at either spot. He has been a consistent offensive contributor during his time in the system, though his .288/.354/.458 line this year is a bit below league average production. … Jase Bowen had two more hits, including his 12th homer of 2026. The blast traveled 425 feet, leaving his bat at 103.2 mph. He also had a lineout that registered a 102 mph exit velocity. Bowen’s homer moved him into a four-way tie for the PCL lead with, among others, former Padres prospect Jack Suwinski. Bowen’s .994 OPS ranks fifth on the circuit. … Will Wagner started in left field for his first professional appearance in the outfield, and had three singles in five plate appearances. Wagner has typically appeared at the non-shortstop infield positions, but it’s apparent that the Padres want to see more positional flexibility from the 27-year-old. He has yet to show much power for El Paso – Wagner has just two extra-base hits in 74 May plate appearances. … Righty Evan Fitterer turned in a stellar outing, earning his first win as a member of the Padres organization. Fitterer worked into the sixth, allowing just four hits. He walked two and struck out five, generating a game-high 11 whiffs. The former Marlins prospect sat 93-95 mph with his fastball, topping out at 96 mph and showing above-average spin on a low-80s curve. The Mission Viejo native signed with the Padres in the off-season as a free agent.

Prospect Watch: The Missions pushed across three runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to squeak past Frisco. … Left fielder Tirso Ornelas had four hits Friday, including a double. The former big leaguer has hit the ball well in May, posting a .317/.380/.524 slash-line. He has seven doubles and two homers for the Missions this month. … Ryan Jackson singled three times and scored a pair of runs. The versatile infielder has a .370 on-base percentage this month. He doesn’t have much power, but he has typically been a steady presence, capable of consistently getting on base. In over 700 professional plate appearances, he has a .380 on-base percentage. … While the Missions’ bats were hot, righty Victor Lizarraga pitched well once again. He scattered seven hits over six quality innings, allowing just one run, walking one and striking out five. After a miserable April (10.91 ERA), the 22-year-old has been stellar in May. He’s appeared in four games this month (one was a piggyback relief appearance behind a Lucas Giolito tune-up start) and has pitched at least five innings in three of them. In 20 innings this month, he has a 1.35 ERA and has walked just four after issuing 17 free passes in 15.2 April innings.
TinCaps 3, Dayton Dragons 2
Key Statistics: LF Alex McCoy 1-for-4, R; 1B Jack Costello 1-for-4, HR (5), 3 RBI, SB (6); SS Jonathan Vastine, 1-for-3; LHP Kash Mayfield, 5 IP, 2 H, BB, 8 K; RHP Isaiah Lowe, 2 IP, H, BB, 3 K; RHP Will Varmette (W, 1-0) 1.2 IP, BB, 2 K

Prospect Watch: On a soggy Friday night in the Summit City, the TinCaps trailed 2-0 in the ninth before Jack Costello connected on a three-run walk-off homer to win the game. … For Costello, the blast was his fifth of the year. The former USD infielder had a disappointing season in Fort Wayne last year, but he’s performed well in 2026. He’s provided an above-average .792 OPS to go with a solid 16% K-rate. … On the mound, Kash Mayfield continues to carve up the Midwest like a modern-day Michael Myers. The lefty worked five shutout innings, allowing just two hits. He walked one and struck out eight before departing after 78 pitches. He also generated 14 whiffs. Despite sitting in the 90-92 mph range with his fastball, Mayfield used his changeup masterfully, mixing in a slider when needed. Friday marked the fourth time in eight starts that Mayfield has tossed at least five innings of shutout ball while allowing two hits or fewer. Through eight starts, Mayfield has a 1.30 ERA, and opposing batters are hitting just .103 against him. … Righty Will Varmette earned his first win of the season, recording the final five outs. He didn’t allow a hit while walking one and striking out two. Varmette’s clean outing lowered his season ERA to 10.80, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. The former undrafted free agent had a nightmare April, giving up an almost unthinkable 19 runs in 7.1 innings. However, he’s been very good in May. In seven outings this month, he has a 0.96 ERA. He’s allowed just four hits in May after surrendering 20 in April.
Visalia Rawhide 8, Storm 6
Key Statistics: CF Ryan Wideman 2-for-5, 2 SB (32); 3B Kerrington Cross 1-for-2, 3 BB; DH Ty Harvey 2-for-5, R; 2B Dylan Grego 2-for-4, 2 R, HR (1), 2 RBI; LHP Kruz Schoolcraft 3.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K; RHP Nick Falter 3 IP, H, 4 K; RHP Vicarte Domingo (L, 1-1) 0.2 IP, H, 2 ER, BB, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The Storm jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Visalia scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to pull ahead. The Storm tied it in the ninth, only to see Visalia plate two in the ninth to earn the walkoff win. After sweeping the Rawhide a few weeks ago, the Storm will need to win both games this weekend to salvage a series split on the road. … Ryan Wideman had another nice night at the plate. He singled twice and stole two more bases, giving him 32 this season. Wideman sports a .871 OPS in his first full pro season. His 32 steals lead the Cal League. … Second baseman Dylan Grego singled and connected on his first homer with the Storm. The former Ball State infielder began the year in Fort Wayne, but he was shuttled back to Single-A after a miserable start. Between the two stops, the 22-year-old has a .450 OPS this season. … Kruz Schoolcraft breezed through the first three innings and looked poised to turn in his best start of the season. Instead, the former first-rounder went out for a fourth inning of work and got knocked around. Schoolcraft struck out the first two batters in the first, retiring the side in order. He breezed through the second and allowed a single in the third, but came back to strike out the final two batters of the inning. His command fell apart in the fourth, when he walked the first two batters of the inning then surrendered a one-out, three-run homer. The overall line of three runs allowed in 3.1 innings looks ugly, but he was sharp most of the night. Overall, the club’s first-round pick last year has an 8.14 ERA for the Storm. … Nick Falter pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four. The Ohio native has given the Storm quality innings, working as a multi-inning reliever. In seven May appearances, he’s pitched 15.1 innings and has a 1.17 ERA while averaging a strikeout per inning. The Padres signed him as an undrafted free agent last season.

Prospect Watch: The ACL Dodgers jumped out early and defeated the complex league Padres in a seven-inning tilt in the desert. … Yimy Tovar is making his best effort to hit his way out of the complex. The young infielder had a pair of singles, and he stole his ninth base of the year. In 15 games, the 20-year-old has a .938 OPS. … Lefty Ryan Och made his second appearance of his rehab stint Friday, struggling in his inning of work. He allowed three earned runs, including a homer. He should head out to a full-season club once he has built up. … Righty Dariel Polanco pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He didn’t allow a baserunner, striking out two in the process. Polanco was our ACL Pitcher of the year last season, although his 5.71 ERA didn’t impress. He’s looked better to start the season – he has a 4.50 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 14 innings.
