Round Rock Express 23, Chihuahuas 7
Key Stats: LHP Fernando Sanchez 2 IP, 3 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, HBP; RHP Michael Flynn IP, 3 H, 5 R (3 ER), BB, K; LHP Kyle Hart 1 IP, H, ER, 3 BB, K; RHP Misael Tamarez 1.1 IP, 0 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 4 BB, HBP; LF Samad Taylor 2-for-5, 2 R, 2B; 3B Clay Dungan 3-for-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI; SS Pablo Reyes 2-for-4, R, RBI, SB (11); DH Jase Bowen 2-for-3, BB
Prospect Watch: Three things that do not mix well in baseball are high elevation, the wind blowing out, and an inability to find the strike zone. The Chihuahuas allowed 13 walks and hit four batters, which led to a majority of the 23 runs they surrendered. Fernando Sanchez, making his second start since being called up to Triple-A, rolled through a quick first inning. In the second, he walked two, hit a batter, and gave up a grand slam, starting a scoring onslaught that ended with the Express putting up nine runs in the ninth inning to turn a big win into a laugher. The lefty had been strong since moving to the rotation, allowing four earned run over 16.1 innings since moving to the Missions rotation. The 25-year-old has struck out 35 in 26 innings this year, but his 21 walks aren’t sustainable. … The Chihuahuas offense roared back to plate five runs in the bottom of the second and regain a 7-6 lead. Clay Dungan was in the middle of rallies in both the first and second inning. The 29-year-old had three hits and two RBI in the game. After a lackluster March/April the middle infielder is hitting .333/.372/.513 in May. However, his effort to help the pitching staff by closing out the game in the ninth didn’t go as well. Called on after Misael Tamarez completely lost the plate and loaded the bases with the team already down eight, Dungan wore it for 32 pitches, as Round Rock pounded him in his first professional pitching appearance. … After going hitless in four straight games, Samad Taylor has course-corrected by collecting a multi-hit game in four straight. The versatile defender went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored on the night. His eight hits over the past four games have also led to six runs scored. The 27-year-old former Mariner is hitting .325 with a .946 OPS. … Jase Bowen continued to hit well, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Over his last five games, the speedy outfielder is 10-for-17 with three doubles, a home run, and five walks. In May, Bowen has a 1.097 OPS while playing above-average defense in center field. Should Jackson Merrill‘s back injury lead to an IL stint, Taylor and Bowen are the most likely call-up options.

Prospect Watch: It was a forgettable game for all members of the Missions save Kai Murphy. The outfielder hit his first home run since last June 13 as part of a two-hit game The former ASU Sun Devil has never been known for his power, tallying just 15 home runs since signing in 2022. The 25-year-old has raised his slugging percentage from .262 last year to .342 as he repeats in San Antonio. Murphy has always been a high-contact, high-OBP player who has enough speed to keep pitchers honest. This season, Murphy is hitting .260 with a .341 OBP and five stolen bases. … After pitching into the seventh for the first time this season in his last start, Jagger Haynes barely made it out of the fifth Wednesday. The lefty largely cruised through the first three before he gave up home runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The eight hits he allowed were a new season high, and the four runs tied his season-worst performance. On the positive side, Haynes struck out at least a batter an inning for the fourth time in his last five starts. … Pitching in his second game since being promoted, Clark Candiotti tossed a scoreless inning. Since joining the Missions, Candiotti has thrown three scoreless innings without walking a batter and striking out three.

Prospect Watch: This game was over before the fans even settled into their seats. By the time the TinCaps came up in the second inning, the score was 13-0, meaning that any runs scored by the TinCaps were garbage time runs. Thankfully, they all count the same on the scoresheet. Alex McCoy belted his team-leading eighth home run to get the TinCaps on the board in the fourth. McCoy now ranks in the top 10 in the league in doubles, home runs, and slugging percentage. Since breaking out of an 0-for-23 slump, he has gone 9-for-25 with two doubles, three home runs, 8 RBI, and four walks, good enough for a 1.248 OPS. … After going 1-for-12 to start his TinCaps career, Justin DeCriscio has caught fire in the last three games. Over his last three games, DeCriscio is 6-for-13 with two home runs. Last year’s tenth-round pick out of NC State started hot in Lake Elsinore this year, and only missed a short beat after his promotion. He is hitting .305/.388/.539 across two levels this year. … After making three rehab appearances in the complex league, Ty Adcock joined the TinCaps to continue his rehab. Adcock looked shaky, allowing a two-run home run in his only inning of work. The 29-year-old, who signed a big league deal in the winter, was thought to be a contender to make the Padres’ bullpen out of spring training before an injury slowed him down. In 2025, Adcock had a 3.00 ERA with the Mets in limited appearances.

Prospect Watch: 18-year-old Jesus Castro continued his breakout first season in the States, tossing four scoreless innings. After pitching to a 2.91 ERA in the Dominican Summer League last year, the righty has continued that success with the Storm. After fighting command through April, Castro has locked in this month, posting a 1.17 ERA with only three walks and 22 strikeouts over 15.1 innings in three starts this month. The Padres tend to cap their starters in the 75-85 pitch range in the lower minors, and when Castro needed 80 pitches to finish the fourth inning, he was removed. … Ryan Wideman entered April 21 hitting .254 with eight stolen bases. Fast forward a month, and Wideman is hitting .310 and just swiped his league-leading 30th stolen base to become the second player in all of minor league baseball to cross that threshold. No other California league player has 20 stolen bases. Last year’s third-round draft pick is hitting .324/.364/.468 over the last month and has swiped 22 bases in 24 attempts. … Two of the highest bonuses the Padres agreed to after last year’s draft were to catchers Ty Harvey and Truitt Madonna. Harvey drew a pair of walks while playing first base for the second time in his career and has now reached in all seven games since coming off the IL. The 19-year-old has a .922 OPS this season with the Storm. Madonna is also starting to find his zone. After losing his hitting streak with a three-walk game Tuesday, Madonna collected three singles to start a new one. Madonna still carries a 29.6% strikeout rate, but he owns a .397 OBP in May.
