Prospect Watch: Jase Bowen continues to hit the ball very hard for El Paso. The toolsy outfielder went 2-for-4 with a double and drew two walks, collecting four RBI. His RBI single in the top of the third logged an exit velocity of 95.6 mph, while his two-strike bases-clearing double in the seventh logged an EV of 107.6 mph. While Bowen still chases and whiffs in the bottom 15th percentile of Triple-A batters, he makes up for it with quality of contact, boasting a 10.4% barrel rate and 106.1 mph 90th percentile exit velocity. Bowen has struggled to come through with runners in scoring position consistently this season, so the club was glad to see the results here. Including his numbers from Sunday, the 25-year-old is hitting just .200 with an .555 OPS with runners in scoring position. … Samad Taylor’s solid 2026 rolled along on Sunday, as he went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. He’s hitting .319 with a .949 OPS against PCL pitching. Taylor owns solid marks with his plate discipline and swing decisions — he has struck out at only a 17.4% clip and owns a 23.3% whiff rate — he isn’t exactly squaring the ball up. His 33% hard-hit rate and 2.7% Barrel Rate are both in the bottom 15 percentile of Triple-A batters. … Marcos Castañon blasted his fifth home run of the year as part of his 2-for-5 day at the dish. The long ball against Sam Aldegheri in the sixth inning left his bat at 94.2 mph. He also logged exit velocities of 104.4 mph in the ninth and 104.3 mph in the third. Castañon, as he typically has been in his career, remains a thorn in the side to any left-hander he’s faced this season, posting a 1.094 OPS against southpaws with a .323 batting average.

Wichita Wind Surge 6, Missions 3

Key Stats: RHP Jhony Brito 4 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 2 H, 2 BB, K; RHP Andrew Moore 1.1 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 2 K; C Ethan Salas 2-for-5, 2 R, SB (9); CF Kai Roberts 2-for-3, RBI, BB; RF Braedon Karpathios 1-for-5, 3 K; 1B Romeo Sanabria 1-for-3, BB

Prospect Watch: The hits just keep on coming for 19-year-old Ethan Salas. The Missions catcher collected his 11th multi-hit game of the year on Sunday, going 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. In his first at-bat of the afternoon, Salas won an eight-pitch battle by lacing a 106 mph single into right center. After collecting his second knock of the day in the top of the fifth with a two-strike single to right, Salas wasted little time swiping his ninth bag of the year. Along with posting exit velocities north of 105 mph on a regular basis, Salas still displays excellent plate discipline and swing decisions, as evidenced by his 16.2% whiff rate and 87.9% in-zone contact rate. Over his past 20 games, he owns a 1.027 OPS. … After two rehab appearances in the desert, Jhony Brito‘s road back from Tommy John surgery moved up to San Antonio. The right-hander looked sharp as he allowed just one earned run in four innings of work and struck out one. Brito’s fastball sat 94-95 mph for the bulk of his outing. In total, his four-pitch arsenal generated seven whiffs, for a solid 29.1% whiff rate as he threw 53 pitches. … Braedon Karpathios turned in a 1-for-5 effort with three strikeouts against Wind Surge pitching. The good news is that the 22-year-old is sporting an .835 OPS since the calendar flipped to May. Still, he has struggled this season as a whole, whiffing at a 36.4% clip and pulling the ball in the air just four percent of the time. … Another player who has seen big improvements in May is first baseman Romeo Sanabria. After going 1-for-3 day with a walk on Sunday, he’s now 16 for his last 48 with a .927 OPS. What’s maybe most notable about this stretch is Sanabria has clearly been more patient, drawing nine walks against just seven strikeouts in 13 games.

TinCaps 11, Cedar Rapids Kernels 8

Key Stats: LF Justin DeCriscio 3-for-6, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 R; RF Kavares Tears 1-for-3, 2B, BB, 2 RBI; 1B Jack Costello 2-for-5, 3B, 2B, 2 R; C Oswaldo Linares 2-for-5, 2 RBI; LHP Jamie Hitt 5 IP 7 R (6 ER), 7 H, 2 BB, 5 K; RHP Clay Edmondson (S, 8) 2 IP, H, 2 K

Prospect Watch: Clay Edmondson entered Sunday’s series finale with the bases loaded and none out in the eighth inning. The 22-year-old UNC-Asheville product somehow allowed just one inherited runner to score and ended up working two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two. The scoreless innings lowered his ERA to a minuscule 0.53 on the year — that ranks first in the Padres system among pitchers with at least 15 innings pitched. Opposing hitters claim only a .167 wOBA against him while striking out at a 36.7% clip. When hitters do make contact, he’s getting them to hit it into the ground at an excellent 58.8% rate. The sidearmer creates especially rough matchups for righties, but left-handers have managed just a .192 average. … Kavares Tears logged another extra-base hit as part of his 1-for-3 afternoon, adding a double, a walk, and two RBIs. It caps a strong week for the former Tennessee Volunteer, as he went 6-for-18 with a 1.046 OPS with seven RBIs against Cedar Rapids pitching. Tears remains a rather interesting offensive player to watch. While whiffing at nearly a 33% rate this year, Tears also draws free passes at an elite 16.4% clip. Despite hitting just .216, his OPS still manages to clock in at .762 … Jack Costello went 2-for-5 with a triple, double, and two runs scored in the win. As he has since his college days, Costello continues to put bat-to-ball, posting an 80.5% contact rate and 83.1% in-zone contact rate. Over his past 15 games, he owns an .844 OPS. … It was a big afternoon for the recently promoted Justin DeCriscio, as the left-fielder went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and connected on his first long ball as a TinCap. In his first five games at High-A, the 23-year-old is 4-for-18 with four RBIs.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 16, Storm 7

Ryan Wideman’s new set-up at the plate is leading to great results. (Photo: Robert Escalante)

Key Stats: CF Ryan Wideman 3-for-3, 3B, 2B, BB, R, SB (29); C Truitt Madonna 2-for-3, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI, R, BB; 1B Kerrington Cross 2-for-4, 2B, RBI, R; SS Jorge Quintana 0-for-3, RBI; RHP Sean Barnett 2.1 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K; RHP, Carlos Medina (L, 1-1) 0.2 IP, 5 ER, 4 H, 2 BB

Prospect Watch: Sunday marked the 15th multi-hit game of the year for Ryan Wideman. The 22-year-old went 3-for-3 with a double and triple, walked and tallied his 29th stolen base of the year. Without question, his most impressive trip to the plate came in the bottom of the fifth, when he worked a nine-pitch walk after falling behind 1-2. It’s a plate appearance, and result, that Wideman wasn’t putting together last season or even during spring training. Along with an impressive .926 OPS to start the year, the Western Kentucky alum has continued to cut back on the strikeouts, posting a very strong 17.0% strikeout rate while jumping his contact rate to 81.9% against Cal League pitching. … Truitt Madonna logged a pair of extra-base hits of his own as part of his 2-for-3 day at the dish. It caps a strong offensive week for the Lake Elsinore backstop as he punished Rancho pitching, going 5-for-13 with four extra-base hits and eight runs driven in. Even with the strong week, the 19-year-old is striking out at a 31.3% clip with a 37.5% whiff rate. Overall, the Seattle area product has shown real growth as he adjusts to higher-level pitching. … Like Madonna, Sunday was another strong showing for University of Cincinnati alum Kerrington Cross. The first baseman went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Since the calendar flipped to May, the 24-year-old is hitting .400 with seven extra base hits, while waking 10 times against only eight strikeouts. He owns a 151 wRC+ and .971 OPS this season. … In a day full of forgettable pitching efforts, Sean Barnett was the lone bright spot of the afternoon. The right-hander worked 2.1 innings and allowed no runs on two hits, walked one and struck out two. He sat 96-97 mph for the outing and touched 99. All told, his arsenal generated fives whiffs and a 31.5% whiff rate. It’s been mixed bag for the 2024 11th round selection, but his outing on Sunday showed why the organization continues to be patient with him.
