Prospect Watch: The Missions offense showed some fight Friday, but Amarillo pushed across a run in the ninth to earn the victory. The loss dropped the Missions’ record to a dismal 5-14. … Despite the loss, the overwhelmingly positive story was the play of prized catcher Ethan Salas, who had his best game of the young season. The 19-year-old connected on his first homer of the year and added a single while starting as the designated hitter. Both hits left his bat at over 100 mph. Salas also drew a pair of walks on the night and is 5-for-12 in the current series against Amarillo. Despite a 2-for-16 start, he is now hitting a solid .280/.357/.400 on the season. … Shortstop Ryan Jackson added three hits and stole his fifth base of the year. The former 17th-round pick had huge production in Lake Elsinore last year before slowing down in Lake Elsinore and struggling down the stretch after reaching Double-A. He’s looked better at the plate over the last week, but has just three extra-base hits in 18 games. Overall, he is hitting .257/.325/.300. … Tirso Ornelas singled twice and drove in three runs Friday. The former big leaguer came into Friday’s game mired in a 1-for-17 slump. The 26-year-old outfielder went into spring training with a coveted 40-man roster spot but was designated for assignment when the organization signed Griffin Canning. After clearing waivers, he was also pushed off the El Paso roster after Jase Bowen and Nick Schnell outperformed him in spring training. Ornelas has a .615 OPS for the Missions so far in 2026. … Southpaw Fernando Sanchez jumped into the Missions’ rotation and tossed three innings. The 25-year-old allowed a pair of runs on three hits, walking three and striking out four. Sanchez has been a solid contributor in the organization for the last few years, finding success as a swingman. He’s off to a rough start this season, as he has allowed 11 walks in 10.2 innings.
Roster Notes: Sanchez’s entry to the rotation comes after lefty Luis Gutierrez hit the IL earlier in the week with a lat strain under his pitching shoulder. While the organization doesn’t initially think it’s a major structural issue, the extended off-time before he’ll be ready to build up again caused them to move the 23-year-old to the 60-day IL as they navigate needing roster spots for the upcoming start of the Arizona Complex League. … Josh Mallitz came off the IL to fill Gutierrez’s roster spot. The righty, who spent part of the spring with Team Israel in the WBC, had opened the year with a minor tweak.

Storm 12, Visalia Rawhide 8

Prospect Watch: The Storm overcame a pair of four-run deficits to earn their fourth straight win against Visalia and move above .500, at 10-9. … On the mound, 19-year-old Kruz Schoolcraft had the best command he’s shown all season despite a less-than-stellar line. Over three innings, he threw 32 of 51 pitches for strikes and punched out three. On the flipside Visalia scored three runs and pounded out seven hits – all singles. Through four starts, last year’s first-round pick has had exceptionally bad luck with balls in play. Including Friday’s effort, opponents have an unfathomable .586 average on balls in play. With improved command, the Oregon native should start to see better results. However, the Padres organization certainly expected better results than Schoolcraft’s 15.95 ERA. Despite the ugly start, he’s gotten a little better each time out. … At the plate, Ryan Wideman continues to tear apart Cal League pitching. The center fielder had two more hits, including a triple. He sits just outside the top ten in the league with a 1.002 OPS, and he leads the circuit with 13 stolen bases. … Shortstop Bradley Frye had a pair of hits to extend his torrid start to the season. He was hit in the elbow in his final at-bat, stayed in to run the bases, and was pulled in the ninth inning. The former Mercer University infielder leads the league with a .418 average, and he ranks sixth with a 1.074 OPS. The 23-year-old is bound for regression at some point – his .525 average on balls in play is not sustainable – but he’s been a big reason why the Storm offense is tied for second in the league in runs scored. …Second baseman Justin DeCriscio‘s early-season production has flown a bit under the radar because of his teammates, but the 23-year-old infielder from up the road in Orange, California, continues to put up big numbers as well. The 10th-rounder had a had a hit and a walk and has now reached base in 12 of his last 13 games. … Big league reliever Jeremiah Estrada pitched a scoreless seventh inning in his first rehab outing, dialing his fastball up to 97 mph and striking out a batter. Estrada is recovering from elbow tendonitis.
