Prospect Watch: Rehabbing pitcher Griffin Canning tossed a perfect first inning with his fastball sitting at 95, but could not make it out of the second inning. While he was not hit hard, he faced some long at bats on the way to surrendering three singles and a pair of walks while throwing 31 pitches for the inning. He ended up only giving up two runs, but the Padres were more worried about him throwing too many pitches in one inning. He should be built up enough to throw 75-80 pitches in his next start, which should come next Tuesday. It’s worth noting that Canning has been on a six day pitching schedule. Through 10 innings, he’s allowed 10 hits and 11 walks. … The Chihuahuas built an 11-4 lead after six innings thanks to four different players hitting home runs. Samad Taylor continues to perform extremely well while playing the outfield. The 27-year-old hit his third home run of the season, and after a 3-for-21 stretch last week now has back-to-back multi-hit games. Taylor has walked in six straight games and has a .378 OBP from the leadoff spot. … El Paso’s lead disappeared in the eighth when Reno put up a six spot. Five of those came against Justin Yeager, before manager Pete Zamora called on Alek Jacob. The right-handed sidewinder was jumped for a game-tying home run by El Paso native slugger Ivan Melendez, but then he settled in and retired the final seven Aces in order to pick up his first win since the victory he claimed for the Padres. … Within minutes after Jacob retired the side in the tenth, the game ended when Nick Schnell turned around a 98-mph fastball for his second home run of the game and fourth of the year. After a tremendous spring training, the minor league free agent hit just .118/.333/.206 through the first the weeks of the season. Over the last three games, Schnell has gone 6-for-12, with four home runs and eight RBI to raise his OPS from .539 to .911 and demonstrate beauty of small sample sizes in April.

Prospect Watch: Ethan Salas got the Missions on the board in the early contest with a booming RBI double in his second at-bat. He finished the seven inning game 1-for-3, but also had a strong game behind the plate. Three batters tried to run on Salas and he threw out all three. Salas has now thrown out 25% of would-be base stealers on the season. … Tirso Ornelas connected on his second home run of the season to break out of an 0-for-13 slump and give the Missions a lead they wouldn’t surrender. He owns a .590 OPS in 47 plate appearances. … Both games featured a four-inning, one-run performance from the Missions starter. Victor Lizarraga, coming off back-to-back starts when he allowed 13 earned runs in just 1.2 combined innings, delivered his best start of the year, even if he walked four. In 10.2 innings, the 22-year-old has walked a staggering 15 batters against to 10 strikeouts. … Eric Yost came back with a matching one run, four inning performance in the nightcap. While it was his first start of the year, he had gone four innings in piggyback outings the last two appearances. Prospect Watch: This game ended when a medical emergency occurred in the Rattlers dugout. Paramedics were called in and transported Brewers prospect Luis Peña from Parkview Field via ambulance. The game was called at that point with one out in the eighth. We obviously wish the best for everyone involved. In the action before that, the TinCaps’ lone extra-base hit belonged to Carlos Rodriguez, who hit his first home run of the season to break out of a 1-for-18 slump. The Venezuelan backstop, who is also logging time at first base, is in Fort Wayne for the first time after hitting .276 with a .858 OPS in 46 games in Lake Elsinore last season. … The only player to reach base safely multiple times was Lamar King Jr. The 2022 fourth-round pick had a dreadful start to the year going, 2-for his first 24. Since then, King has reached base safely in every game going 10-for-26, with three doubles and a home run. Despite the rough start, King now has an OPS over .700. … TinCaps pitchers had a rough one, but one of the lone bright spots was Clay Edmondson. The 22-year-old struck out the side around a walk. In seven innings this season, last year’s 15th-round pick has only allowed one run on three hits as batters struggle with his sidewinding delivery. … Tucker Musgrove made his third appearance as he settles into his twice-a-week work schedule in relief. While he continued to flash his near triple digit fastball, he struggled to find the plate. Musgrove faced five batters, walked two, struck out two, and gave up a double as he tossed 30 pitches, only 14 for strikes.

Prospect Watch: The Storm rallied three in the ninth to earn the walk-off win as Jose Verdugo singled home Truitt Madonna to get the Storm within one game of .500. It was Madonna’s second run of the game, following his third hit. The 19-year-old has had himself a busy week even though it has only been two games. Against Visalia, Madonna is 7-for-10 with five doubles a triple, five runs, and four RBI. It has raised his OPS from .617 to .854 in two days. Last year’s 11th-round pick now has eight doubles on the season against seven singles. His three home runs on the season put him tied for sixth in the league, and his eight stolen bases rank fourth. … The California League stolen base lead belongs to teammate Conner Westenburg. After a blistering start, the former McNeese State Cowboy is down to .367/.426/.490. He leads the team with 15 runs scored.
