Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas pulled off the comeback win in a battle between rival organizations, with Kyle Tyler steadying the ship out of the bullpen, giving El Paso 1.2 innings of scoreless work and earning the win. While known primarily for his unusual journey between the Angels, Padres, and Red Sox organizations in 2022, Tyler has also been a helpful member of the El Paso bullpen, going 2-1 with a 4.98 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. … Luis Liberato had a night, slugging a double and homering, driving in four runs, and scoring one of his own. A former member of the Mariners organization, Liberato is batting .238 with 9 home runs and 32 RBIs in his first season with the Padres. … Eguy Rosario worked three of El Paso’s 10 walks on the night, and also added a double for good measure to extend his hitting streak to three games. Rosario is slashing .258/.350/.455 in 279 at-bats in 2022. … Brent Rooker also collected three free passes and made Oklahoma City pay by scoring three runs. Rooker, the other part of the Taylor Rogers trade, is slashing .260/.379/574 in 169 at-bats for El Paso. (Mark Wilkens)

Missions 9, Midland RockHounds 5

Key Stats: RHP Lake Bachar (W, 1-2), 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K; SS Domingo Leyba, 4-for-5, 2 HR (7), 3 R, 4 RBI; RF Jorge Oña, 2-for-4, R; LF Tirso Ornelas, 1-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI

Prospect Watch: The Missions put up eight runs in the fourth inning to propel themselves to victory. Notably, the win was the first for Lake Bachar since August 22, 2019, when he was an Amarillo Sod Poodle. Bachar, the 144th overall pick of the 2016 draft, missed 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic and injuries, returning this season with San Antonio. Making his second relief appearance of the season, Bachar was impressive over two innings, keeping Midland off the basepaths and striking out three. … Domingo Leyba has parlayed a solid June into a scorching start to July with a two-home run performance to drive in four runs and score three. Leyba slashed .283/.385/.467 in June, turning around a rough start to the season for the 26-year-old who has seen big league time with the Diamondbacks and Orioles. … Speaking of turning around rough starts, Jorge Oña collected another pair of hits, giving him eight in his last four games, and raising his average to .222 after starting the season with a .145 clip in April. Ona’s 158 at-bats are already the most the outfielder has had since 2018 as injuries and the lost season of 2020 have impacted his playing time. … Tirso Ornelas is on a five-game hitting streak after a double tonight. Ornelas also drove in a pair of runs, and is now slashing .286/.327/.393 on the season after a .347/.380/.480 mark in June.  (Mark Wilkens)

West Michigan Whitecaps 4, TinCaps 0

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps managed just four singles and dropped their third straight to West Michigan in the battle of the Caps. Outfielder Robert Hassell III had a pair of singles and drew a walk in the loss. The 20-year-old outfielder struggled in May but bounced back nicely in June, hitting .296/.346/.521 with a pair of homers. The 2020 first-rounder has been one of the few bright spots for an offense that has had trouble scoring runs. … Efraín Contreras had his best outing of the year Friday night. The 22-year-old worked five innings for the first time all season, allowing a pair of earned runs on five hits. He only notched one strikeout but he certainly pitched well enough to win. Contreras has been brought along slowly as he continues his career after having Tommy John surgery late in 2020. (Kevin Charity)

Storm 15, Inland Empire 66ers 0

Key Statistics: CF James Wood, 3-for-5, 2 R, HR (6), 4 RBI; 3B Marcos Castañon, 2-for-5, 2 R, 2B, HR (9), 2 RBI; LF Angel Solarte, 3-for-4, 3 R, RBI; C Juan Zabala, 2-for-5, 2 R, HR (2), 3 RBI; 2B Wyatt Hoffman, 4-for-5, R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, SB (2); RHP Garrett Hawkins (W, 4-4) 7 IP, 7 K; RHP Alan Mundo, 2 IP, BB, HBP.

ACL Padres 9, ACL Cubs 8 (8 innings)

Key Statistics: DH Joshua Mears, 2-for-5, 2 2B; 1B Kelvin Alarcon, 2-for-4, R, BB; LF Juan Murillo, 3-for-4, 2 R, RBI; LHP Javier Chacon, 4 IP, H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K; RHP Evan Sweeting, IP, H, 2 BB, 2 K; RHP Brandon Heiss (S, 1) IP, H, R, 2 K.

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres hung on to beat the ACL Cubs in Mesa. … Joshua Mears had a pair of doubles Friday night but he also struck out three times. The 21-year-old had some amazing moments in Fort Wayne this year, as he dented several buildings with home runs in a series in Lansing. After a prolonged slump, he was put on the development list and now he is playing in the ACL. In 14 complex league contests, Mears has a .864 OPS. The concern with Mears continues to be his propensity to swing-and-miss. In 51 plate appearances in the ACL, he has punched out 22 games. As we have mentioned, Mears’ power is arguably the loudest tool of any player in the system. … Left fielder Juan Murillo had a career-high three hits in the ACL club’s win. The Cuban-born Morillo signed with the Padres as an international free agent in June. In a 25 at-bat sample, the 19-year-old is hitting .400/.423/.560.
