Prospect Watch: The Aviators swept El Paso to pull within one game at the top of the division. The Chihuahuas gave up 41 runs and 20 home runs in the series. … Austin Allen hit a monster homer over the top of the batter’s eye in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the shutout. He connected on a double earlier in the game and now has nine extra-base hits in 13 games since going back to Triple-A. Allen, 25, continues to hit lefties hard for El Paso, posting a .940 OPS in 70 plate appearances. … Travis Jankowski collected his fourth straight multi-hit game, lining three singles to center on the night. After starting slowly when he was on a rehab assignment, the 28-year-old centerfielder has pushed his average up to .333 in 75 at-bats. … Bryan Mitchell gave up a leadoff homer to open the game, and things didn’t get much better from there. The object of much scorn from the fanbase allowed six runs on 10 hits, using 106 pitches to labor through 5.1 innings. Somehow, that lowered his ERA in seven PCL starts to 13.32. Mitchell has walked as many as he’s struck out and allowed a .427 average against on the year.

Prospect Watch: The Sod Poodles went oh-for the day with runners in scoring position and fell to top Royals prospect Brady Singer. On the heels of three straight strong starting pitching efforts, Lake Bachar took the ball for Amarillo. He worked in and out of trouble all game, allowing 15 men to reach base in six innings. Despite the traffic, he avoided damage except in the third inning, when he surrendered a two-run homer among four hits. The 24-year-old righty has held Texas League opponents to less than one hit per inning on the year. In the second half, he owns a 2.23 ERA and has shaved a walk per nine innings of his total, though he has still struggled with control and command. … Luis Torrens added two more hits to extend his hitting streak to 12. The catcher has a .900 OPS in the second half with seven homers after hitting only three in the first half. 2020 will be his final option year.

Prospect Watch: For the third consecutive night, the Storm went to extra innings to beat Inland Empire. Xavier Edwards came around with the winning run on Allen Córdoba‘s third hit of the night. Córdoba, playing left field, bumped his average up to .313, tied for second behind Luis Campusano in the Cal League. The 23-year-old Panamanian also swiped two more bases in three attempts to move into third place on the circuit. After a brutal, concussion-shortened campaign in 2018, the former Rule 5 pick is hitting about 25 percent better than the league this year and showing versatility defensively. He’ll have one year of control left heading into the winter. … Esteury Ruiz finally nudged his OBP back up to .300 with an RBI double in the third. However, after being thrown out at the plate without sliding, he was removed from the game. The dynamic 20-year-old has scuffled since being asked to move to the outfield earlier this month, but picked up the pace with six hits in his last 12 at-bats. … Gabe Mosser delivered the best of his four outings since joining Lake Elsinore earlier in the month. Last year’s 27th-rounder allowed just one run on five hits over six while striking out a season-high nine batters. After putting up stellar strikeout-to-walk numbers in the Midwest League, the righty had only struck out nine in his first 15.1 Cal League innings.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps claimed a rare easy victory Sunday, pairing timely hitting with a strong outing by Cullen Dana and strong relief work. Dana, making his second start, allowed just one unearned run over a career-high 5.2 innings of work. The big lefty, who had Tommy John surgery before the start of what would have been his junior year in 2018, stretched out to 82 pitches, by far the most since he’s thrown since the Padres drafted him in the 30th round last June. He got a pair of double plays and a stellar relay from Dwanya Williams-Sutton to gun down a would-be runner at home to keep the Dragons in check. … While Dana did his work, the TinCaps offense posted two three-run innings in the first four frames. Ethan Skender came through with his first homer since joining the club as part of a three-hit game. The 22-year-old from Illinois acknowledged in a post-game interview with TinCaps broadcaster John Nolan that he’s been pressing. He has nonetheless hit in eight of 10 games and owns a .300 average. … After going hitless in two straight games, Agustin Ruiz bounced back with a three-hit game that included his 19th double of the season. The left-handed slugger could post his first professional month with a strikeout rate below 20% if he gets through the next few games on his current pace.

Prospect Watch: For the second day in a row, the Dust Devils exploded in Everett, slugging six homers among their 11 extra-base hits. In the first four years of the Padres’ affiliation with Tri-City, no Dust Devil hitter topped seven homers in a season. Jordy Barley reached that total with his second straight two-homer game. Perhaps as encouraging as the power surge is that the 19-year-old has struck out just eight times in his last 44 plate appearances after posting a K rate above 30 percent for the first month of the season. … Sean Guilbe also went yard twice and is one behind Barley in the home run race. The Pennsylvania native has hit to a .234/.325/.486 line through 31 games despite a strikeout rate still hovering at 30 percent. … Logan Driscoll connected on a double and triple and also drew a walk. Through his first 40 professional plate appearances, the George Mason product has seven extra-base hits.
