Prospect Watch: El Paso used a four-homer attack to defeat the Isotopes in New Mexico. El Paso has hit 205 homers this season — the most in professional baseball. …  Michael Gettys hit his 23rd homer of the season in El Paso’s victory. It was Gettys’ first homer since July 4th. The 23-year-old has put up a respectable .278/.339/.537 slash-line this month, despite striking out in 37% of his plate appearances. … Seth Mejias-Brean hit his eighth homer Friday night. The veteran shortstop is fifth in the PCL with a .338 batting average. The Tucson, Arizona native doesn’t possess much power but he has been a steady, veteran presence on a team full of young players. …  Kazuhisa Makita pitched two scoreless innings to notch his third victory of the year. Makita, 34, has thrown very well in El Paso in 2019, despite possessing a fastball that barely scrapes 80 mph. Makita has stymied righties in his 13 innings of work and he’s racked up 17 strikeouts against just two walks.

System Notes: It has been reported by both Dennis Lin of the Athletic and Russ Dorsey, who is subbing for A.J. Cassavel of MLB.com, that infielder Luis Urias and Adrian Morejón will join the Padres in Chicago for today’s game.

Prospect Watch: The Sod Poodles trailed 7-0 after 3 1/2 innings. They scored 10 runs over the final three innings to complete a comeback in front of a packed house at Hodgetown. … Outfielder Edward Olivares had two homers, including a three-run shot that put the game out of reach. Olivares has been arguably the best player in the Texas League since the all-star break. In 27 second-half games, the 23-year-old is hitting .375/.420/.625, with six homers in 113 plate appearances. Over the aforementioned 23 games, Olivares has struck out in 14% of his plate appearances. … Hudson Potts had three hits, including a double in Sod Poodles’ victory. Potts has swung the bat well over the last week and he has managed to keep his strikeouts in check. The 20-year-old struck out four times in a game last Friday. Since then, Potts has punched out just twice in 19 plate appearances. … MacKenzie Gore struggled mightily but was bailed out by the Sod Poodles’ offense. Gore had a bit of an unlucky start to the night but was hit hard in the subsequent innings. His fastball sat in the low 90’s and touched 94 — down a tick from where he was earlier in the season. Gore allowed seven runs — including three homers — in four innings of work.

Key Statistics: SS Gabriel Arias, 2-for-4, 2 RBI; CF Allen Còrdoba, 1-for-4; C Jalen Washington, 1-for-3, 2B; RHP Elliot Ashbeck (W, 4-2) 8 IP, 3 H, 5 K.

Prospect Watch: The Storm used a three-run third to cruise to a win against Modesto. … Gabriel Arias had a pair of hits and drove in two runs Friday night. Arias is currently riding a five-game hitting streak which has raised his batting average to .281. Arias is still leading the league in SwStr% at 21.3% but with his tools, he has a very good shot at developing into a big leaguer. … Elliot Ashbeck tossed a gem, throwing eight shutout innings to notch his fourth victory. Ashbeck, 25, has pitched very well after joining the Storm rotation in June. Overall, Ashbeck has pitched to a 3.14 ERA in 77.1 innings. He should set a new career-high in innings with his next appearance.

Prospect Watch: A night after a comeback for the ages, the TinCaps lost at home on “Christmas in July” night at Parkview Field. …Tucupita Marcano had a pair of hits, including his second homer of the year. Marcano has been about league average offensively as a 19-year-old in the Midwest League but that doesn’t really tell the whole story. Marcano has continued to display excellent bat-to-ball skills. Marcano has struck out in just 9% of his plate appearances this season, which trails only the recently promoted Wander Franco among league leaders. Marcano may never develop a ton of power but his ability to make contact is pretty special. … Henry Henry pitched three shutout innings out of the bullpen Friday night. The righty has a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings this month with nine strikeouts. Henry will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft this winter.

Prospect Watch: The Dust Devils held on to win at Gesa Stadium. …Jordy Barley had three hits, including a double to go with a pair of stolen bases. Barley, 19, has played well overall for the Dust Devils, flashing power at the plate and athleticsm all over the field. Overall, Barley is hitting .252/.315/.370 for Tri-City this year. … Kelvin Melean had a double and drove in two runs for the Dust Devils. Melean, 20, has bounced around this season, playing for Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne before making his way up to Pasco. Melean has hit .350/.431/.417 in 68 plate appearances for the Dust Devils in 2019. … Angel Acevedo pitched five shutout innings to earn his first win of the year. The 20-year-old righty allowed just three hits over the five innings of work, racking up six strikeouts with just one walk. Acevedo pitched well in Tri-City last year as a starter but struggled earlier in the season out of the Fort Wayne bullpen.

Prospect Watch: The AZL teams split a pair of games on a hot night in Phoenix, but then again, every night in the summer in Phoenix is a hot night … After a couple of days off, C.J. Abrams continued his dominance of the Arizona League. Abrams had two hits, including a triple. Abrams opened his career with a 20-game hitting streak that ended the other night against the other Padres’ AZL squad. Overall, Abrams is slashing an absurd .426/.455/.693 in 22 games this year. … Jarryd Dale had a double, as part of a multi-hit night. The 18-year-old signed with the Padres in 2017, out of Australia. Overall, Dale is hitting .302/.353/.349 in 67 plate appearances. …Hansel Rodriguez made a rehab appearance Friday night, working two innings. Rodriguez didn’t allow a run and struck out one. He should have an opportunity to move back to Lake Elsinore in the not-too-distant future.
