Prospect Watch: As home runs continue to fly in the Pacific Coast League, Logan Allen was replaced in the second inning after giving up three home runs and pair of singles following a fielding error by Josh Naylor. This marks the third time in five starts that Logan has not made it past the third inning. The 21-year-old has also gone consecutive starts without giving up any walks, which plagued him through his first three starts. … Michael Gettys has quietly raised his slash line to .282/.319/.576, but his 17.6 swinging strike percentage is fourth-worst in the league, and his 35.2 percent strikeout rate puts him fifth in the PCL. … Luis Urias hit his second homer of the year and avoided any strikeouts as he extended his Triple-A hitting streak to all seven of his appearances this year.

Prospect Watch: While the Sod Poodles were blanked on the scoreboard, they did at least manage to scatter nine hits across the game. Edward Olivares, who collected a single and a double, was the lone Sod Poodles to reach base in three of his at-bats. The former Blue Jays prospect has mostly replicated his numbers from last year with Lake Elsinore but has added power even in the less-friendly offensive environment of the Texas League. The 23-year-old has four home runs in his first 77 trips to the plate after he managed only 12 in 2018. Two have come away from the friendly confines of HODGETOWN. … Buddy Reed has whiffed on nearly one in every five pitches. Only Gabriel Arias and Esteury Ruiz have a higher swinging strike rate in the Padres system. … Kazuhisa Makita, who left Monday night’s game with the trainer, returned to action with a strong outing Thursday. The soft-tossing righty was called upon after Emmanuel Ramirez couldn’t get out of the first inning and worked a season-high 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Prospect Watch: Tucupita Marcano dominated in short-season ball last year, but started this season relatively slowly, hanging around the Mendoza Line. The last two times I saw him at Parkview Field, Marcano looked to be in a funk mechanically, frequently allowing his shoulders to fly erratically up and out early in his swing. His three-hit performance marks just the second multi-hit game for him over the past 10 games but the video of his swing looks much smoother during yesterday’s game. After collecting just one extra-base hit through his first 16 games, he’s clubbed a pair of doubles and a homer in the last two contests. … Teammate Xavier Edwards, who kept pace with Marcano last season, has returned to the lineup this week without any signs of rust, going 5-for-8 over the past two games. He did, however, get caught stealing for the third time this season after only getting caught once in 23 attempts last season. … Gabe Mosser allowed more than one earned run for the first time this season on a season-high seven hits. Opposing hitters came into the game hitting well below the .200 mark against the righty the Padres drafted in the 27th round last summer.
