San Diego Padres Daily Farm Report: June 8

All four San Diego affiliates had strong outings from their starting pitchers, and the offenses combined for 41 hits. With passed ball walkoffs, rehabbing major leaguers, and solid performances from key prospects, it was, as usual, a great night to follow the Padres farm system.

Chihuahuas 4, Iowa Cubs 3

Prospect Watch: El Paso got five baserunners in the first inning (two walked and three singled) to jump out to a 4-0 lead, and they were able to make that lead hold up the whole game, only getting another single the rest of the way. Iowa starter Duane Underwood (ranked no.29 in the Cubs system by MLB Pipeline) struck out ten Chihuahuas in five innings of work. … After a solid Triple-A debut,Jesse Scholtens had allowed 20 earned runs in his last four starts (13.2 innings), with batters hitting .381/.423/.571 against him. Last night, he bounced back in a big way, striking out six and scattering four singles and a pair of walks. Scholtens held Iowa second baseman David Bote, the Cubs number 14 prospect, hitless and struck him out twice. … Luis Urías walked in all four plate appearances on the night. In his last 14 games, he is hitting .109 (5 for 46) with a pair of homers, seven walks, and four strikeouts. … Closer Robert Stock worked around an error in the ninth to record the save and lower his Triple-A ERA to 2.70. The 28-year-old, whose fastball touches 100 MPH, is averaging more than a strikeout per inning, while allowing opposing hitters to bat just .158.

Flying Chanclas 5, Midland RockHounds 4

Key Stats: SS Fernando Tatis Jr. 1-3, 2 BB; LF Josh Naylor 3-5; C Austin Allen 0-4, BB, 2 K; 1B Kyle Overstreet 4-5; CF Michael Gettys 0-4, IBB, 2 K; RF Rod Boykin 2-4, K; SP Colin Rea 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 K; RP Phil Maton 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K

Prospect Watch: San Antonio made use of 13 hit, all singles, and a few defensive miscues to win in walk-off fashion. The Chanclas loaded the bases on a pair of singles and an intentional walk to Michael Gettys in the bottom of the ninth. The next pitch went for a passed ball to allow the winning run. … Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the first with a walk, but was caught trying to steal second. He is 7 for 10 in stolen base attempts this year, after going 32 for 47 (68%) in 2017. He finished the day with a single and two walks. Tatis is starting to take over the Texas League, while refining his plate discipline. He has struck out just once in his last 23 plate appearances. Tatis has an OPS north of 1.000 since May 1st. … Starter Colin Rea had his best outing as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery. He retired the first six hitters he faced, striking out five. In his three previous starts for San Antonio (11.1 innings), he’d allowed 13 earned runs, and opposing batters had a 1.121 OPS against him. Friday, he was fooling hitters with his breaking ball and sequencing his pitches well. He threw five shutout innings using just 72 pitches, but allowed a walk and a double in the sixth before being lifted for another rehabbing Padre, Phil Maton. Maton allowed the inherited runner to score on a bunt single and double play. He then struck out three of the last four batters he faced. … Josh Naylor had three hits, all singles in the Chanclas victory. Naylor has hit all year but his power has disappeared as of late. Naylor has homered just twice in his last 140 at-bats. Despite the loss of power, his OPS is still nearly .900.

Lancaster JetHawks 8, Storm 7 (10 innings)

Prospect Watch: In a typical, wild game in Lancaster, the Storm blew a four-run lead and lost in extra innings. Reggie Lawson had a quality start in Lancaster, one of the most hitter-friendly parks in minor league baseball. The 20-year-old from nearby Adelanto allowed some loud contact, including a homer and four doubles (three of which came back-to-back-to-back), but worked out of some jams and retired the last nine batters he faced. While his walk rate has surged after a brilliant April, his 3.9 BB/9 is still down from 4.3 BB/9

in 2017. … Hudson Potts hit his 18th double of the year, one off the league lead. The 19-year-old is slugging .500 since May 1st, and has a 24% K rate this year. He struck out 31% of the time in the first half last season in Fort Wayne. He is also showing improved plate discipline, walking 8.4% of the time this year compared to 4.4% last season. … Jorge Oña continues to post some interesting home/road splits. He is OPSing .850 on the road and .547 at home. He has homered just twice in 44 games since April 9. … David Bednar allowed Lancaster to tie the game with three consecutive singles in the ninth inning. He took the loss when he allowed the placed extra-innings runner to score from second on a sac bunt followed by a walk-off single in the tenth.
